    Notes: Abstract  Previous studies using parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) null mutant mice have indicated severe abnormalities in the endochondral ossification, suggesting that PTHrP affects chondrocyte differentiation. In this study, we found in newborn PTHrP-deficient mice some deformities in the mandible that is formed via intramembranous ossification. The mandibular ramus was bent downwards and a prominent bone crest to which the deep layer of masseter muscle was tendinously attached was observed in the mandibular body. Transmission electron microscopic studies showed that active bone formation was progressing along the tendon fibers of the masseter muscle. The examination of 3-D reconstruction models indicated that the mandibular ramus was bent at the site of muscle attachment, which was shifted in the direction of the muscle fibers. Muscle fiber type analysis using myosin ATPase staining showed that the masseter muscle in the newborn PTHrP-deficient mice contained numerous type 2B fibers, demonstrating premature maturation of this muscle. Based on these findings, we speculated that premature maturation of the masseter muscle leads, probably due to increased tensile forces, to accelerated bone crest formation and subsequent bending of the mandibular ramus. These results further suggest that PTHrP is involved in the regulation of muscle development in normal animals.

    Notes: Summary Changes in capillary walls between human glial, non-glial and metastatic brain tumors were studied with conventional ultrathin section and freeze-fracture replica techniques. The following results were obtained. (1) In glial tumors, ultrathin section studies showed cell junctions of the capillaries were either short or elongate. Moreover, endothelial hyperplasia, surface infolding of endothelial cells, irregularity of the basal lamina and a large extravascular space were observed. Freeze-fracture replicas of capillary endothelium showed tight junctions as two to seven strands. In addition, pinocytotic vesicles had increased markedly and were an average of 25 per μm2. Both ultrathin and freeze fracture studies showed that, in contrast to malignant gliomas, there were only slight changes in benign astrocytomas. (2) In non-glial tumors, ultrathin sections showed surface infoldings, increased vesicles, many fenestrations of endothelial cells, irregularity of basal lamina and enlarged perivascular space. Freeze-fracture replicas of vascular endothelium, showed that the average number of pinocytotic vesicles and fenestrations were 25 and 22 per μm2, respectively. Moreover, the tight junction was composed of one or two strands which appeared to be a discontinuous array of particles. (3) In metastatic brain tumors, ultrathin studies showed capillary endothelia were proliferated, had marked infolding, and showed an increased number of pinocytotic vesicles and many fenestrations. Moreover, short and elongate intercellular junctions were presented but no open junction was detected. Finally the basal lamina lost its three-layered appearance and was irregular in width. Freeze-fracture replicas showed pinocytotic vesicles had increased and were 24 per μm2 on average in four cases, but fenestrations and tight junctions could not be detected. The most fundamental feature of vessels in these three different kinds of tumors was whether they were fenestrated or not. Glial tumors were non-fenestrated, whereas non-glial and metastatic tumors were fenestrated.

    Notes: Summary  The efficacy of intracisternal methylprednisolone was examined on lipid peroxidation in a canine subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) model. The concentration of lipid peroxides increased significantly in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) supernatant on Day 4, and also in the arterial wall on Day 7. Intracisternal administration of methylprednisolone reduced markedly the products of lipid peroxidation both in CSF and in the arterial wall. The findings suggest that lipid peroxidation might play a significant role in the genesis of vasospasm after SAH, and that direct administration of methylprednisolone into the subarachnoid space might reduce lipid peroxides in the arterial wall and so influence the prevention of vasospasm.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé A partir de l'étude de 546 membres supérieurs (273 cadavres) nous avons trouvé 75 cas (chez 58 cadavres) de chef surnuméraire de muscle biceps brachial (21.3%). Nous en avons étudié la forme, le trajet, la taille et les insertions ainsi que l'organisation des divisions du nerf musculo-cutané. Dans de nombreux cas le chef surnuméraire provient soit de l'humérus où il s'insère entre le m. coraco-brachial et la partie proximale du muscle brachial soit/et du septum intermusculaire médial. Dans quelques cas un chef surnuméraire a été observé à partir du tendon du m. grand pectoral ou du m. deltoïde ou encore de la capsule articulaire, voire du tubercule majeur. II rejoint habituellement le chef commun du m. biceps brachial ou son aponévrose. Parfois la jonction se fait sur l'un ou l'autre des deux corps musculaire. L'étude du n. musculo-cutané montre une anastomose avec le nerf médian dans 43 des 75 membres concernés (57.3%). Cette branche anastomotique va du n. musculo-cutané au nerf médian dans 24 cas et du n. médian au n. musculo-cutané dans 12 cas, elle va dans les deux directions dans 5 cas; dans les 2 cas restant le modèle d'anastomose est variable. Parfois une branche du n. musculo-cutané entoure le chef surnuméraire et fusionne ensuite avec le tronc du nerf. La présence d'un chef surnuméraire semble donc modifier le trajet et les connexions du nerf musculo-cutané.
    Notes: Summary Out of 546 upper limbs (273 cadavers), supernumerary heads of the biceps brachii were found in 75 limbs (13.7%) of 58 cadavers (21.3%). The form, origin, and insertion of the supernumerary heads, and branching pattern of the musculocutaneus nerve were studied. In addition, the dimensions of the heads were measured. In many cases, the supernumerary head arose from the humerus, between the insertion of the coracobrachialis and the upper part of the origin of the brachialis, and/or from the medial intermuscular septum. In a few cases, a supernumerary head arose from the tendon of the pectoralis major or the deltoid, or from the articular capsule, or from the crest of the greater tubercle. The supernumerary heads typically joined the common belly, or the aponeurosis of the biceps brachii. Some heads joined the belly of the long head or that of the short head. In the examination of the branching pattern of the musculocutaneus nerve, communication between the musculocutaneus nerve and the median nerve was found in 43 out of the 75 limbs (57.3%). The communicating branch ran from the musculocutaneus nerve to the median nerve in 24, from the median nerve to the musculocutaneus nerve in 12, in both directions in 5, or in another type of pattern in 2 out of 43 limbs. Sometimes a branch of the musculocutaneus nerve ran around a supernumerary head and then fused with the present trunk. The presence of a supernumerary head seemed to affect the course and branching of the musculocutaneus nerve.
