    Notes: Summary The authors analyzed the water and lipid contents of oedematous tissues of white matter obtained during the operation, comparing with the absorption value in the CT scan. As the absorption value lowered its level, the water content increased, while the lipid decreased. However, after subtracting these two components, the content of protein also showed a significant decrement parallel to the absorption value despite the existence of extravasated protein. The decrement of lipid content was considered to be due to a dilution effect by an expanded volume of extravasated oedema fluid, as well as the decrease in protein, rather than the actual loss of tissue component; that is demyelination. It is the relative decrease in protein content which contributes to the low absorption value of oedematous tissue.

    Notes: Summary The authors analysed the contents of two intracranial epidermoids showing low density on computerized tomography. Although both cases had approximately similar composition, 85, 83% for water, 12,12.5% for protein, 3,4.5% for total lipid including cholesterol, respectively, the absorption values differed from each other. Both tumours were identified to communicate with CSF, one by delayed metrizamide CT scan and the other by direct aspiration during operation. The low absorption values in both cases resembled or were slightly higher than that of CSF in each case, and not a single pixel showed negative values for lipid. These findings suggest that it is the CSF content within the anatomical interstices or structural crevice of the tumour, rather than cholesterol, which is responsible for the low absorption values which appeared in the CT scan.

    Notes: A two-thermocouple probe, composed of two fine-wire thermocouples of unequal diameters, is a novel technique for estimating thermocouple time constants without any dynamic calibration of the thermocouple response. This technique is most suitable for measuring fluctuating temperatures in turbulent combustion. In the present study, the reliability and applicability of this technique are appraised in a turbulent wake of a heated cylinder (without combustion). A fine-wire resistance thermometer (cold wire) of fast response is simultaneously used to provide a reference temperature. A quantitative and detailed comparison between the cold-wire measurement and the compensated thermocouple ones shows that a previous estimation scheme gives thermocouple time constants smaller than appropriate values, unless the noise in the thermocouple signals is negligible and/or the spatial resolution of the two-thermocouple probe is sufficiently high. The scheme has been improved so as to maximize the correlation coefficient between the two compensated-thermocouple outputs. The improved scheme offers better compensation of the thermocouple response. The present approach is generally applicable to in situ parameter identification of a first-order lag system. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Background. The role of surgical intervention for the treatment of small round cell sarcoma of bone, has become important. However, there have been few reports concerning the surgical safety margin for this disease. An appropriate surgical margin should be discussed in relation to the effects of preoperative treatment, local recurrence rate, and prognosis. Methods. Twenty-eight patients with small round cell sarcoma of the bone were studied. Nineteen patients were stage M0 (of whom 18 were operated) and 9 were stage M1 (of whom 4 were operated). Preoperative treatment was evaluated by histological examination of the surgical specimen. The surgical margin was evaluated as curative, wide, marginal, or intralesional, by methods accepted by the Japanese Orthopedic Association. Results. (1) Of the 18 operated patients in stage M0, 2 showed local recurrence because of an inappropriate surgical margin or poor response to preoperative treatment. (2) Patients who had a wide margin procedure and who responded to preoperative treatment did not show local recurrence. (3) Patients who had a curative procedure did not show local recurrence regardless of the effect of preoperative treatment. (4) Patients with surgical speciment histologically evaluated as showing over 90% necrosis showed no local recurrences and had favorable prognoses with wide or curative procedures. Conclusion. The effects of preoperative treatment and surgical margins were important prognostic factors for local control in patients with small round cell sarcoma of the bone.
