Notes: Abstract Lead clusters grown in a pulsed arc cluster ion source (PACIS) are soft-landed under UHV conditions on cooled polycrystalline silver targets. VUV-photoelectron spectroscopy with light from the synchrotron BESSY applied to mass-selected clusters on cold (160 K) substrates shows that the Pb 5d core level binding energies depend on cluster size and-only beyond a critical amount of deposited clusters-on the coverage Θ. A decreasing particle size induces a core level shift towards lower binding energy with respect to the bulk value, the maximum shift being −0.33 eV. The same value is achieved by atom deposition and can be explained by a Born-Haber cycle. The limits for small two-dimensional and large three-dimensional clusters will qualitatively be discussed by the same model. Deposition on a warm substrate, however, leads-at least for small systems-to a gradual line shift with Θ.

Notes: Abstract Reaction products corresponding to the transfer of one and several protons have been measured over a large angular range for incident energies of 380 MeV and 400 MeV in reactions of86Kr with88Sr,90Zr and92Mo. For transitions with smallQ-values (total kinetic energy loss TKEL≦10 MeV) the transfer probabilities are deduced. The magnitudes and slopes of these probabilities as function of the distance of closest approach between two nuclei are discussed. The results for single proton transfer are well described by tunneling, whereas the transfer of two and more nucleons into low lying states of the final nuclei seems to be influenced by intermediate transfer steps with larger TKEL. The data give the possibility to discuss the relation between deep-inelastic and quasi-elastic processes. The deep-inelastic data are analyzed successfully by including deformations, charge transfer and statistical fluctuations into the frictional model of Gross and Kalinowski.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung In der vorstehenden Arbeit (s.
Notes: Summary In the preceding publication (see p. 1) the question arose of how to explain the longitudinal tears of the vertebral arteries at the departure of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery, that occur as origin of fatal subarachnoidal hemorrhage subsequent to blunt forces against the head. As the result of calculation of flow dynamics in a right-angled branching a curvature of the main vessel opposite to the flow in the branch develops. If the main vessel is unable to evade, the branch will be impressed into the main vessel in a piston-like manner. An experiment with silicon tubes succeeded to produce longitudinal tears resembling to those described by Krauland. Traumatic increase of pressure and stress of the vessels are considered the most likely cause of longitudinal ruptures of the basal arteries.

Notes: Abstract A new cluster source, the “PACIS”, has recently been developed [1, 2]: a pulsed high-current arc is fired between two electrically isolated electrodes. In a stream of carrier gas, the nascent metal plasma cools down, thus undergoes significant aggregation. After supersonic expansion into high vacuum, the resulting cluster ions will be subject to investigation. Here, we present the current state of the source development and further technical details. The integral intensity is estimated by film thickness measurements and yields a deposition rate of, e.g., up to 2 Å per shot for lead. About 10% of the emitted material turns out to be charged. Time-of-flight measurements show similar cluster ion mass spectra as they are known from laser vaporization. Already single shot mass spectra display completen-series which can be followed ton ≈ 40. For heavy clusters, a significant velocity slip is estimated from the beam velocities.

Notes: Abstract Metal clusters (Pb N ,Au N ) grow in a pulsed arc cluster ion source (PACIS). After supersonic expansion in the helium carrier gas the resulting beam is soft-landed under UHV conditions on either cold poly-cristalline silver,Si(111) or naturalSiO 2. Photoemission measurements with light from the synchrotron BESSY serve to investigate the electronic structure of the clusters. In this communication, valence band photoemission is presented forPb N onAg, Pb N onSi/SiO 2 andAu N onAg. After lead deposition, the valence band region exhibits only low, weakly structured intensity, whereas deposited gold clusters lead to the formation of a resolved narrow peak at 3.52 eV below ε F , which we attribute toAu 5d 5/2.

Notes: Germanium-silicon heterostructures grown by surfactant-mediated epitaxy and GexSi1 - x/Si quantum well structures grown by low pressure chemical vapour deposition have been in investigated by secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) using a low energy (2 keV) Cs+ primary beam and detecting negative secondary ions. Depth profiles have been obtained for both types of samples at angles of incidence of 10° and 60° (off normal). Due to the low bombardment energy, the depth resolution was sufficient to resolve the quantum wells, but pronounced matrix effects and interface transients of the secondary ion yield were observed at 10°. It was found that the artefacts are considerably reduced at 60°. It is shown that well-known qualitative concepts relating to the Cs concentration at the surface can explain most aspects of the results.
