Notes: Summary The charge distribution in phenylacetylene, methyl propiolate, diphenyldiacetylene as well as in their anion-radieals was calculated by GNDO/2 and EHT methods. According to the obtained results, the electroinitiated polymerization of these monomers takes place by their direct reduction. A good agreement between theoretical and electroanalytical data was observed.

Notes: Summary Azo diacyl peroxide compounds have been successfully used as sequential bifunctional initiators, in reactions of radicalic polymerization of vinyl monomers, for block copolymer obtaining. Resuming previous investigations, the 0-[4-(t-butylazo)-4-cyanovaleryl]-0'-actyl-peroxide has been synthesized; this is a new azo diacyl peroxide compound, obtained either by the direct condensation of the 4-(t-butylazo)-4-cyanovaleric acid(the BACV acid) with peracetic acid — under the dehydrating action of the dicyclohexylcarbodiimide — or from the chloride of the respective acid by treatment with peracetic acid in the presence of pyridine. The initiator structure is confirmed by the characteristics evidenced by IR and H-NMR, as well as by the 13C-NMR spectra. The synthesized product may be kept, in cold conditions, for a long time; nevertheless, by contact with a base it manifests the tendency of changing itself into a symmetrical azo diacyl peroxide.

Notes: Summary The paper deals with the synthesis of the phenylazo-formamidoethyl 4-t-butylazo-4-cyanovalerate, a product which — by its two azo groups having different thermal stabilities — may be used in initiating processes of stepwise radicalic polymerization. The preparation is based on the condensation of the 4-t-butylazo-4-cyanovaleric acid chloride with N-hydroxy ethyl-phenylazoformamide (HEPF) in anhydrous chloroform, in the presence of pyridine. The initiator purification involves its passing over an alumina column, on using methylene chloride as eluent. HEPF is a new intermediate obtained by the reaction of the ethyl phenylazocarboxylate with ethanolamine. Both the HEPF structure and that of the bis-azo initiator is confirmed by elemental analysis and spectroscopic measurements (IR and H-NMR spectra), as well.

Notes: Summary Using the copolymerization equation proposed by Kelen and Tüdös, 25 radical copolymerization systems implying acetylenic and vinylic monomers were reexamined. Of these, only 12 can be characterized by the usual terminal copolymerization model. 5 systems present high scattering of experimental data given by the original authors; 2 systems belong to another copolymerization mechanism, and 6 give meaningless reactivity ratio values. The copolymerization equation proposed by Zaitsev et al. for radical copolymerization of acetylenic monomers could not be accepted.

Notes: Summary The synthesis of three Schiff-base type monomers containing pyrrole units was performed. Their polymerization was carried out by chemical oxidation with (NH4)2S2O8. Some preliminary thermal and electrical properties were determined.

Notes: Conclusions The semiconducting properties of biomacromolecules are a certainty which cannot be neglected when models are proposed for explaining some biological function such as, enzymatic activity of cytochrome oxidase, olfactory transduction, visual reception, properties of the cellular membranes, etc.6,7,9. Although a perfect correlation does not yet exist between the results of molecular orbital calculations and experimental data regarding the electrical conduction in proteins and nucleic acids9, a profound study on the aspects connected with intrinsic mechanisms of conduction in biomacromolecules, as well as on dependence of electrical properties on the impurities acting in vivo, should increase our understanding of biophysical phenomena.

Notes: Summary High molecular weight methyl methacrylate (M1) — styrene (M2) copolymers were obtained by plasma-induced bulk copolymerization. The reactivity ratios, determined by Kelen — Tüdös method, were shown to be r1=0.41±0.01 r2=0.57±0.01 and the coisotactic alternating addition probability G=0.48±0.02. These data indicate a radical mechanism of copolymerization.

Notes: Summary Three new phenothiazine-containing electrono-donor monomers: methacryloyl-2′-hydroxyethyl-2-(N-phenothiazinyl)propionate (i) acryloyl-2′-hydroxyethyl-2-(N-phenothiazinyl) propionate (ii) and 2-(N-phenothiazinyl) propionic acid vinyl ester (iii) were synthesized and radically polymerized. The ionization potentials of poly(i), poly(iii) and of the model for the structural unit of the acrylic polymers: acetyl-2′-hydroxyethyl-2-(N-phenothiazinyl) propionate determined with two small acceptors were discussed in terms of sterical hindrances.
