    Notes: Abstract The morphology of ELF hiss events observed at low-latitude ground station Varanasi (L = 1.07, geomagnetic latitude 14°55′N) are reported, which consist of two types: (1) events which propagated in ducted mode along the geomagnetic field line corresponding to observing station Varanasi and (2) events which propagated in ducted mode along higher L-values (L = 4–6), after reaching the lower edge of ionosphere excite the Earth-ionosphere wave guide and propagate towards equator to be received at Varanasi. To understand the generation mechanism of ELF hiss, incoherent Cerenkov radiated power from the low latitude and middle latitude plasmasphere are evaluated. Considering this estimated power as an input for wave amplification through wave-particle interaction, the growth rate and amplification factor is evaluated which is too small to explain the observed wave intensity. It is suggested that some non-linear mechanism is responsible for the generation of ELF hiss.

    Notes: . Ascogregarina culicis and Ascogregarina taiwanensis are common gregarine parasites of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, respectively. These mosquito species are also known to transmit dengue and Chikungunya viruses. The sporo-zoites of these parasites invade the midgut epithelial cells and develop intracellularly and extracellularly in the gut to complete their life cycles. The midgut is also the primary site for virus replication in the vector mosquitoes. Therefore, studies were carried out with a view to determine the possible role of these gregarines in the vertical transmission of dengue and Chikungunya viruses from larval to adult stage. Experiments were performed by exposing first instar mosquito larvae to suspensions containing parasite oocysts and viruses. Since Ascogregarina sporozoites invade the midgut of first instar larvae, the vertical transmission was determined by feeding the uninfected first instar larvae on the freshly prepared homogenates from mosquitoes, which were dually infected with viruses and the parasite oocysts. Similarly, the role of protozoan parasites in the vertical transmission of viruses was determined by exposing fresh first instar larvae to the dried pellets of homogenates prepared from the mosquitoes dually infected with viruses and the parasite oocysts. Direct vertical transmission and the vertical transmission of CHIK virus through the oocyst of the parasites were observed in the case of Ae. aegypti mosquitoes. It is suggested that As. culicis may have an important role in the maintenance of CHIK virus during the inter-epidemic period.

    Notes: Abstract Trials with fenbendazole (Panacur, Hoechst India Ltd) were carried out on two commercial farms in subtropical western India to study the response and economics of nematode treatment in adult dairy cows. Milk yield, lactation length, time to first oestrus and worm egg output were monitored in treated and control groups. Treatment reduced the egg count considerably. Treated cows produced 142 litres more milk over 100 days (p〈0.05), with extension of lactation length and advancement of time to first oestrus. The economic gain in terms of milk yield far outweighed the cost of anthelmintic used.

    Notes: Abstract Fenbendazole (Panacur bolus, Hoechst India Ltd) was incorporated at a rate of 0.5 g/kg into urea-molasses blocks made by two different processes. The concentration of the drug in blocks and its bioavailability were measured using plasma oxfendazole as marker. The recovery of the drug in blocks made by a warm process was 68% and the plasma oxfendazole concentration remained fairly stable at 0.2 and 0.12 µg/ml from day 6 of feeding in cattle and buffalo, respectively. The drug seemed to be inactivated in blocks made by a hot process, with reduced bioavailability. A low and sustained plasma concentration of the active metabolite of the drug could be maintained by self-medication using urea-molasses blocks as fenbendazole carrier.

    Notes: Abstract The synergistic effects of piperonyl butoxide (PB)2, sulfoxide (SU), and dimethyl amino aniline (DAA) used in conjunction with two organophosphate pesticides (phorate and formothion) and two carbamate pesticides (mexacarbate and carbaryl) were examined in terms of the LC50 and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition in the snailLymnaea acuminata. The three synergists reduced the LC50 of phorate, formothion, mexacarbate, and carbaryl at exposure periods ranging from 24 to 144 hr. PB and SU had strong synergistic action; DAA had little effect; the highest synergistic ratio (70) was found with carbaryl and PB. The synergists enhanced thein vitro inhibition of cholinesterase caused by the pesticides; the synergistic effect onin vitro inhibition, however, was lower, compared to the change in the LC50.

    Notes: Abstract. Effect of sublethal treatment (20% and 60% of LC50/24 h) of plant-derived molluscicides, viz. Polianthes tuberosa, Trachyspermum ammi, Allium sativum powder; Azadirachta indica oil; oleoresin of Zingiber officinale; and their active molluscicidal component in combination (1:5) with MGK-264 or piperonyl butoxide on the reproduction of snail Lymnaea acuminata have been studied. It was observed that the combination of plant derived molluscicide and their active molluscicidal components, viz. tigogenin, hecogenin, azadirachtin, allicin, thymol, and [6]-gingerol combination with MGK-264 or piperonyl butoxide caused a significant reduction in fecundity, hatchability, and survival of young snails. Withdrawal of snails to fresh water after the above treatment caused a significant recovery in the fecundity of L. acuminata.
