Notes: Abstract The electrochemical corrosion behaviour (passivity, pitting and repassivation) of austenitic stainless steel AISI 321 containing titanium has been investigated in methanol containing different concentrations of sulphuric acid (0.001–1 M). The cathodic reaction is observed to be hydrogen evolution. Anodic polarization of the stainless steel reveals a characteristic ‘cathodic loop’ in methanol with higher concentrations of H2SO4 (0.1 M and 1 M). A clear and stable passivity is also observed in each solution mixture which breaks down at higher potentials due to pitting. The passivation current, passivity range, pitting intensity and pitting potential are found to vary with variation of acid concentration in the methanol. The kinetics of pitting and the morphology of the pits have been studied. A variation in concentration of acid and scan rate has been found to influence the protection potential of the stainless steel.

Notes: Abstract Peptide M, an 18-amino acid fragment from position 303 to position 320 of retinal S-antigen, produces experimental autoimmune uveitis (EAU), similar to that produced by native S-antigen, in several vertebrate species including nonhuman primates. It was observed that 12 of the 39 (30.7%) patients with uveitis, 1 of the 29 (3.4%) patients with systemic connective tissue disorders (CTD) without eye involvement, 2 of the 7 (5.8%) patients of CTD with uveitis, 1 of the 17 (5.8%) patients with diabetic retinopathy, and none of the 19 normal healthy controls showed a significant lymphoproliferative response to peptide M (stimulation index of 3 or more). Yeast histone H3 peptide gave a positive response in 1 (2.5%), 2 (6.8%), 1 (14.2%), 2 (11.7%), and 2 (10.5%) individuals, respectively, in the different groups studied. In a few cases a positive response to yeast histone H3 peptide was observed without significant stimulation to peptide M. These findings indicate that peptide M could also be an immunogenic epitope of S-antigen in humans and be aetiopathologically related to uveitis in a subset of patients with this disease. However, unlike experimental animals, the responses to peptide M and yeast histone H3 were nonconcordant, necessitating further studies.

Notes: Abstract The passivity and pitting behaviour of AISI 316 stainless steel in methanol containing different concentrations (0.001 to 1 M) of H2SO4 has been investigated by an electrochemical method. Higher concentrations of sulphuric acid have been found to facilitate the passivation process and influence the passivity current and passivation range. The studies reveal the peculiarities of steel pitting and predicts the protective properties of the surface by a process of repassivation in this system. The kinetics of pitting, morphology of the pits and repassivation of the surface have been investigated for this steel. The beneficial effect of molybdenum as an alloying element of steel, on corrosion behaviour has been noticed.

Notes: Summary Earth's crust has non-uniformity in lateral as well as in vertical directions. In some tectonically significant areas, extremely rapid Love waves velocity variations have been observed. To study Love waves dispersion characteristics in such areas, two non-uniform channels with exponential velocity and rigidity variations in vertical and lateral directions are considered. Theoretical dispersion curves are presented to understand quantitatively the effect of non-uniformity in different directions by using ray theory techniques.

Notes: Abstract The frequency and morphology of mental spines and spinous mental foramina was studied in 1200 adult human mandibles of Indian origin. The mental spines were present in 1178 mandibles (98.2%). The usual textbook description of four spines, arranged in two pairs one above the other was found only in 231 mandibles (19.6%). Mandibles with only two superior mental spines were seen in 842 cases (71.4%) which were associated with either a median vertical ridge below them (47.7%) or with a rough impression in place of the median ridge (23.7%). Spinous mental foramina (one to three) close to the midline and in between the spines were found in 1165 mandibles (97.57%). The presence of these foramina has not been mentioned in most textbooks of anatomy.

Notes: Abstract  Freshwater aquifers in small coral islands usually occur as thin lenses which are significantly influenced by stresses such as groundwater pumping, sea tides, etc. Kavaratti, a coral island, is one of the 36 such islands in the Arabian Sea off the western coast of India. Detailed hydrogeological investigations were carried out to determine the quantity of freshwater that could be pumped in addition to the present usage. Salinity of groundwater must remain within permissible limits and a 2-D solute mass transport model with a vertical section of the island was constructed by the computer code SUTRA. The model was calibrated by obtaining a match of computed and observed values of the water table, tidal efficiency, and salinity of groundwater at the water table. The model analysis showed that the salinity of groundwater continues to increase unless groundwater pumping is kept below a certain rate. Groundwater potential can be augmented by reducing the subsurface outflow to the sea and by raising the water table by a subsurface dam.

Notes: Abstract  Detailed hydrogeological studies in a granitic micro-watershed have been carried out to determine the extent, behavior, and characteristics of the aquifer. The study includes analysis of lithologs, drill time log, pumping tests, and slug tests. Realistic field conditions have been taken into account for characterizing the aquifer system. Slug tests were carried out to estimate aquifer parameters at the wells which could not sustain pumping.
