Abstract The amorphization of Mg-Cu-Sn alloys with various compositions has been studied using the melt-spinning technique, with particular emphasis on the magnesium-rich corner of the ternary phase diagram. The results have been interpreted in terms of Miedema's theory, which highlights competition between the amorphous phase and crystalline solid solutions. Competition by ordered intermetallic compounds has also to be considered in order to explain the restricted amorphization region found in these experiments.
