    Notes: Abstract We give an algorithm that computes the closest pair in a set ofn points ink-dimensional space on-line, inO(n logn) time. The algorithm only uses algebraic functions and, therefore, is optimal. The algorithm maintains a hierarchical subdivision ofk-space into hyperrectangles, which is stored in a binary tree. Centroids are used to maintain a balanced decomposition of this tree.

    Notes: Abstract We investigate three-dimensional visibility problems for scenes that consist ofn non-intersecting spheres. The viewing point moves on a flightpath that is part of a “circle at infinity” given by a planeP and a range of angles {α(t)¦tε[0∶1]} ⊂ [0∶2π]. At “time”t, the lines of sight are parallel to the ray inP, which starts in the origin ofP and represents the angleα(t) (orthographic views of the scene). We give an algorithm that computes the visibility graph at the start of the flight, all time parameters at which the topology of the scene changes, and the corresponding topology changes. The algorithm has running time0(n + k + p) logn), wheren is the number of spheres in the scene;p is the number of transparent topology changes (the number of different scene topologies visible along the flight path, assuming that all spheres are transparent); andk denotes the number of vertices (conflicts) which are in the (transparent) visibility graph at the start and do not disappear during the flight.

We consider the problems of computing r-approximate traveling salesman tours and r-approximate minimum spanning trees for a set of n points in ${\Bbb R}^d$ , where d≥ 1 is a constant. In the algebraic computation tree model, the complexities of both these problems are shown to be $\Theta(n\log(n/r))$ , for all n and r such that r 〈 n and r is larger than some constant. In the more powerful model of computation that additionally uses the floor function and random access, both problems can be solved in O(n) time if $r=\Theta(n^{1-1/d})$ .

    Notes: Abstract Fetal male DNA can be identified in maternal blood by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of Y-specific sequences. This technology has not reached a satisfactory accuracy and reproducibility in fetal gender determination because of the very low concentration of fetal cells. Our purpose was to evaluate the possibility of improving the reliability of this test by setting up a repeated amplification system. We amplified, by nested PCR of the Y-specific sequence DYS14, 137 DNA samples extracted from maternal peripheral blood (93 from male-bearing and 44 from female-bearing pregnancies ranging from the 6th to the 36th gestational week). Each maternal DNA sample was tested doubly, in two different PCR sessions, with a total of four amplifications. We obtained discordant results in the four amplifications in 82/137 (60%) samples. The best interpretation of these discordant results was obtained by applying a positivity cutoff of at least two positive amplifications for considering a DNA sample as belonging to a male-bearing pregnancy. We obtained a sensitivity of 83%, a specificity of 93%, a positive predictive value of 96% and a negative predictive value of 72% in fetal male gender diagnosis. By applying this quadruple testing system, we significantly improved PCR accuracy and predictive values compared with single and double testing of the same samples. We conclude that, for future investigations of fetal DNA retrieved from maternal blood, the application of a quadruple testing system is better than the single PCR test.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of calcium supplementation on bone mineral density (BMD) was evaluated in female twin pairs aged 10–17 years with a mean age of 14 years. Forty-two twin pairs (22 monozygotic, 20 dizygotic; (including one monozygotic pair from a set of triplets) completed at least 6 months of the intervention: 37 pairs to 12 months and 28 pairs to 18 months. BMD was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). In a double-blind manner, one twin in each pair was randomly assigned to receive daily a 1000 mg effervescent calcium tablet (Sandocal 1000), and the other a placebo tablet similar in taste and appearance to the calcium supplement but containing no calcium. Compliance (at least 80% tablets consumed), as measured by tablet count, was 85% in the placebo group and 83% in the calcium group over the 18 months of the study, on average increasing dietary calcium to over 1600 mg/day. There was no within-pair difference in the change in height or weight. When the effect of calcium supplementation on BMD was compared with placebo at approximately 6, 12 and 18 months, it was found that there was a 0.015±0.007 g/ cm2 greater increase in BMD (1.62±0.84%) at the spine in those on calcium after 18 months. At the end of the first 6 months there was a significant within-pair difference of 1.53±0.56% at the spine and 1.27±0.50% at the hip. However, there were no significant differences in the changes in BMD after the initial effect over the first 6 months. Therefore, we found an increase in BMD at the spine with calcium supplementation in females with a mean age of 14 years. The greatest effect was seen in the first 6 months; thereafter the difference was maintained, but there was no accelerated increase in BMD associated with calcium supplementation. The continuance of the intervention until the attainment of peak bone mass and follow-up after cessation of calcium supplementation will be important in clarifying the optimal timing for increased dietary calcium and the sustained, long-term effects of this intervention.
