Notes: Abstract We have measured the inclusivep T spectra of soft photons produced at central and backward rapidities in 450 GeV/cp-Be collisions down to 1 MeV/c in transverse momentum. In the region 1〈p T 〈20 MeV/c an excess of photons over those expected from hadronic decays is observed. This excess is comparable, within systematic errors, with estimates of direct photons produced via hadronic bremsstrahlung. An upper limit is derived on the presence of additional sources of direct photons at small transverse momentum.

Notes: Abstract Absolute differential cross sections of non-characteristic radiation emitted in energetic heavy-ion collisions (E P =3.92–48 MeV,Z=11–22) can only be explained in the framework of quasimolecular radiation. All other processes, particularly bremsstrahlung mechanisms are found to be negligible. For high projectile and photon energies the one-step quasimolecular radiation is dominant in solid targets, whereas the two-step process contributes mainly at low projectile and photon energies.

Notes: Abstract One-particle-inclusive measurements have been performed for the charge, kinetic energy and angular distributions of reaction products from238U +238U at 1 766MeV (7.42MeV/u) incident energy. The deep inelastic products exhibit features similar to those seen in reactions induced by medium heavy nuclei: increasing particle transfer is observed with increasing energy damping, the angular distributions are peaked near the grazing angle, they broaden significantly with increasing energy loss and/or charge transfer. The dominant reaction mechanism, however, is found to be sequential fission of one or both primary reaction products. The reconstructed primaryZ- andQ-value distributions show more particle transfer at a given energy loss than in other systems, i.e. the diffusion process seems to proceed colder in this system. This is confirmed by relatively large cross sections for surviving deep inelastic reaction products belowZ=92. A direct search forα-decay or fission of superheavy nuclei being produced in a deep inelastic reaction and being implanted in a surface barrier detector resulted in an upper cross section limit of 2 ×10−32cm2.

Notes: Abstract The prompt and isomeric fission probabilities of240Pu have been studied using the239Pu(d,p) reaction. A number of resonances are observed in the subbarrier population of the 4 ns fission isomer for excitation energies between 4.0 and 6.2 MeV. Apart from a structure at 4.3 MeV, they do not coincide with transmission resonances found in prompt fission. Calculations with an extended doorway state model which simultaneously reproduce the measured delayed and prompt fission probabilities yield revised fission barrier parameters as well as spectroscopic information on fission and gamma widths of highly excited states in the second minimum.

Notes: Abstract Kinematically complete experiments have been performed on the two- and three-body exit channels in the reactions84Kr+166Er and129Xe+122Sn at 12.5 MeV/u. Three-body events occur with an unusually high probability. They arise from a fast two-step mechanism where a sequential fission-like process follows a deep inelastic collision with preferentially very large energy losses. Strong Coulomb proximity effects are observed in the three-body final state which, treated quantitatively in Coulomb trajectory calculations, establish a time-scale of 1·10−21 s between the consecutive scission acts. The angular distribution of fission fragments is consistent with an orientation of the fission axis approximately collinear with the axis of the first scission, and the mass distribution of the fission is asymmetric with the heavier mass emitted preferentially opposite to the direction of the third particle. The high fission probability, the short time-scale, the near collinear orientation and the fission mass asymmetry together present consistent evidence for a new phenomenon of non-equilibrium fission.

Notes: Abstract Excitation functions and angular distributions have been measured for fission of238U induced by136Xe ions with bombarding energies between 4.5 and 5.9 MeV/N. Structures expected theoretically as characteristic for Coulomb fission have not been observed. The Q-value of −(7.5±1.0) MeV measured for bombarding energies below 4.7MeV/N, however, appears to be compatible with inelastic scattering (e.g. Coulomb excitation) rather than subcoulomb transfer followed by fission. The total kinetic energy of deep inelastic events at 5.9 MeV/N is consistent with the current knowledge about mass diffusion, but also (for the highest excitation energies) with a fast fission process in the presence of the projectile.

Notes: Abstract A delayed fission activity with a half-life of (55±7) s and a production cross section of (5±1)nb has been observed in the irradiation of237Np with 104 MeVα particles. It is tentatively assigned to the electron capture decay of232Am followed by fission of232Pu With a probability of (1.3 −0.8 +4 )· 10−2 A barrier height of (5.3±0.4) MeV is extracted for232Pu exceeding theoretical barrier heights by about 2MeV. Systematic deviations between experimental and theoretical barrier heights previously observed in particular for U and Th isotopes are now also established for neutron deficient Pu isotopes indicating severe defects in the procedure of calculating static fission barriers.

Notes: Abstract K-vacancy production probabilitiesP K (b) were measured with gas and solid targets byK-x-ray particle coincidences (impact parameterb is determined by the particle detection angle) in the region of light (Z P ≃Z T ≃10) up to intermediate heavy (Z P ≃Z T ≃36) collision systems. The measuredP K (b) reveal a very strong difference in shape between solid and gas targets independent ofZ. Only theP K (b) measured with gas targets and those measured with solid targets at very small impact parameters show reasonable good agreement with the 2pπ x-2pσ rotational coupling model. At largeb theP K (b) from solid targets are strongly influenced by a multiple collision effect, where projectileL-vacancies seem to be produced in collisions beforeK-vacancy production. However, this effect cannot be understood just by a two collision process whereL-vacancy production and 2pπ x-2pσ rotational coupling occurs in consecutive collisions.

Notes: Abstract The angular distribution of conversion electrons from the 4+→2+ transition in the ground-state rotational band of240Pu has been measuredvia the238U (α,2n)240Pu reaction. The electrons are emitted in flight from the Pu nuclei recoiling into vacuum atv/c≅0.2%. The attenuation of the angular distribution by extranuclear fields is found to be less than 20% within 120 ps. The hyperfine interactions are discussed with particular attention to the high charge states of actinide recoil ions following internal conversion. Charge distributions ranging up to 45+ have been observed for240Cm nuclei in the239Pu(α,3n) reaction.
