Notes: The large-amplitude motions of a ship running in waves are analyzed with a mathematical model reduced to a system of eight coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations. Bifurcation analysis in relation to the surf-riding condition, with control parameter the angle of the rudder, shows the existence of a region of oscillatory behavior, containing also a chaotic domain. This region ends with a homoclinic connection and a dangerous jump toward the overtaking-wave mode, which can incur ship capsize. Addition of linear control removes the chaotic domain while giving rise to new regions of oscillation. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The behavior of a ship encountering large regular waves from astern at low frequency is the object of investigation, with a parallel study of surf-riding and periodic motion paterns. First, the theoretical analysis of surf-riding is extended from purely following to quartering seas. Steady-state continuation is used to identify all possible surf-riding states for one wavelength. Examination of stability indicates the existence of stable and unstable states and predicts a new type of oscillatory surf-riding. Global analysis is also applied to determine the areas of state space which lead to surf-riding for a given ship and wave conditions. In the case of overtaking waves, the large rudder-yaw-surge oscillations of the vessel are examined, showing the mechanism and conditions responsible for loss of controllability at certain vessel headings.

Notes: Abstract: The 27Al(p,γ)28Si reaction has been investigated using two different 4π NaI summing detectors. The strength of 26 resonances in the energy range from 200 to 1120 keV has been measured. In addition, yield measurements have been carried out at 9 beam energies in the 490 to 1150 keV range in order to determine the direct capture cross-section. The existing data on the non-resonant mechanism were analysed and combined with the results of the present work. The resulting resonance strengths as well as the deduced direct capture astrophysical S-factor are compared with previous work.

Notes: Abstract: An excitation function of the 19F(p, αγ)16O reaction has been measured over the proton beam energy range Ep= 200–800 keV using a 4 π NaI summing spectrometer. A new resonance was found at ER= 237 keV and its properties ΓR, σR and ωγ have been extracted. The strengths of all resonances at Ep= 200–800 keV have been also extracted. The importance of the 1+ resonance at ER= 11 keV is discussed and its width has been estimated taking into account interference effects with the strong 1+ resonance at ER= 340 keV. The reaction rates have been calculated over a wide range of temperatures and compared with the rates of the (p, α0) and (p, απ) branches of the 19F(p, α)16O reaction.

Notes: Abstract: An excitation function of the 27Al(p,γ)28Si reaction has been measured over the proton beam energy range Ep= 800–2000 keV using a 4π NaI segmented crystal. In the above energy range 47 narrow resonances were measured and their strengths have been deduced. The absolute efficiency of the detection system has been determined for each one of the resonances via Monte-Carlo simulation, taking into account the decay scheme of each resonance. The results of the present work are compared with literature.
