Notes: Abstract  The contamination of cereals with field-growing Fusarium species can be a health hazard since Fusarium are known for their ability to produce mycotoxins like zearalenone (ZON) and deoxynivalenol (DON). For this study the formation of ZON was investigated under controlled growth conditions. Ergosterol, as an indicator of fungal growth, and ZON were analysed by HPLC with UV and fluorescence detection respectively. It is shown that ZON is synthesised in the late growth phase of the fungi, which is typical for secondary metabolites. Milling of contaminated wheat shows a reduced content of ZON in fractions of low ash content. Consequently the concentration of ZON in bran, which has a high ash content, was much higher.

Notes: Abstract The macroscopic mathematical model based on compartments with ideal mixing zones and tanks-in series was evaluated. Based on the experimental data obtained in a 300 dm3 pilot reactor and the dependence of mixing time on the volume of liquid phase, we have found mathematical relations between the ratio of vessel diameter to liquid level, adjustable parameters of model and the mixing time.

Notes: Abstract A mathematical model for single and multi step deep-jet bioreactors is presented. A stagewise approach based on macroscopic mechanistic model which divides the reactor into compartments with good quality of mixing and plug flow regions (macromixer), was used. For the mathematical representation of this model a system of differential equations, describing the concentration of tracer in structural elements based on mass balance, and the Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg numerical method of integration, was applied. The mixing time in a 300 dm3 tank was determined by conductivity method with NaCl as tracer.

Notes: Abstract Sacral insufficiency fractures develop over a period of time and show time-dependent changes. We report on 15 CT examinations of 5 patients with early-stage insufficiency fractures of the sacrum. In 4 patients only irregular sclerosis without distinct fracture lines was present in 7 of 8 fractures. Of these 4 patients; 3 exhibited intraosseous gas inclusions in a ventral part of a lateral mass; 5 of 8 fractures disclosed a ventral cortical break. When distinct fracture lines had developed in 1 patient, intraosseous vacuum phenomenon had disappeared. Fracture lines evolve over weeks to months and show central bone absorption. The fractures can heal as demonstrated in 4 of 6 fractures in 3 patients, can persist over 1 year without significant changes or can progress to pseudoarthrosis with bone destruction similar to neuropathic joint disease. Intraosseous vacuum phenomena can persist to this stage. Intraosseous vacuum phenomenon is recognized as a potential finding in the early stage of sacral insufficiency fracture, which also is true for irregular sclerosis and ventral cortical disruption.

Notes: Abstract A preoperatively undetected spontaneous mesocaval shunt lead to impairment of organ function after liver transplantation. Ischemia of the graft due to partial hepatofugal portal flow was demonstrated by color-flow Doppler sonography and angiography. The successful catheter embolization of the mesocaval shunt via a transhepatic approach is presented.

Notes: Abstract Two 10-year and 11-year-old children with oesophageal and gastric varicose haemorrhage unresponsive to medical treatment and repeated endoscopic sclerotherapy underwent percutaneous transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunting (TIPSS). A newly developed introducing system was used. The procedure was performed to avoid the increased risk of emergency liver transplantation in children with hepatic failure. Immediately after the procedure bleeding stopped and the patient's condition improved. Ascites disappeared and liver function improved. The stent shunt was shown to be patent by angiography and Doppler ultrasound for a follow up period of more than 1 year. Conclusion TIPSS may be of benefit in children with severe portal hypertension. It allows control of intractable bleeding, and stabilizes the patients preparing them for subsequent elective orthotopic liver transplantation.

Notes: Diffraction experiments with resonant γ-radiation were performed on a single crystal of silicon at room temperature. The high energy resolution of the Mössbauer effect was used to separate elastically and inelastically scattered radiation. A special experimental setup is described, which in addition allows the determination of the total thermal diffuse scattered intensity. Inelastically scattered radiation was observed in the whole investigated angular range. In the vicinity of Bragg reflections the ratio of the integrated intensities of inelastically to elastically scattered radiation was in very good agreement with the results of calculations using different computer programs based on first-order thermal diffuse scattering theory for a wide range of chosen scan lengths. The measured ratios of the elastically scattered radiation of different Bragg reflections were used to determine the temperature factor B.

Notes: Mössbauer diffraction experiments have been performed on a LiNbO3 single crystal at room temperature for scattering angles between 14.5 and 40.5°. A large contribution of inelastically scattered intensity was detectable for all scattering angles. Radiation damage caused by the high-energy components of the radiation emitted by the 57Co Mössbauer source was observed. An attempt was made to estimate the temperature factor B from the measured inelastically scattered radiation assuming that first- order thermal diffuse scattering (TDS) is dominant. Both the TDS contribution to the integrated intensity within the Bragg peak and the ratio of the integrated first-order TDS included in the Bragg peak to that included in the background were calculated with various programs from the elastic constants and compared with the experimental values.
