Notes: Summary In rabbits methoxamine reversed the vasopressor effect of St 587 and abolished the EEG synchronizing action of St 587. The interaction on the blood pressure could be ascribed either to the different chemical structures of St 587 and methoxamine or to partial agonistic properties of St 587. The interaction on the EEG appears to be more complex.

Notes: In this work correlation integrals are used for the analysis of various EEG signals from rabbits in resting states and under the influence of an anesthetic. The comparison with surrogate data reveals nonlinear dynamics in all of the time series. Our attempt to determine the correlation dimension D2 by the modified algorithm of Theiler [Phys. Rev. A 34, 2427 (1986)] failed since no saturation is reached with increasing embedding dimension. The hypothesis of low-dimensional chaos turns out to be inconsistent with our results, but we can still distinguish, at least qualitatively, between different states of brain dynamics. A quantitative characterization of the time series is possible by defining correlation parameters Pa derived from correlation integrals reflecting also autocorrelation of the signal. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary For the initiation of an arousal reaction, the stimulation of the reticular activating system by square waves of frequencies varying from 50 to 400 c/s was studied. To evaluate the stimulation efficiency, the initial frequency of the rhinencephalic arousal reaction was used. The optimal stimulus frequency depends on the duration of the pulses. The optimal frequency was found to be 200 c/s at a pulse duration of 0.5 ms and 100 c/s at a pulse duration of 1.5 ms.

Notes: Summary No consistent correlation was found to exist between pyramidal cell activity and the type of hippocampal electrical activity. The type of hippocampal EEG pattern seems to be determined by the firing pattern of septal neurons rather than pyramidal neurons.

Notes: Summary Doses of nicotine and pentetrazol required for the elicitation of certain EEG changes were determined in normal and hypothyroid rabbits. Hypothyroidism was produced by pretreatment with sodium perchlorate, methylthiouracil or J131. For elicitation of hippocampal seizure discharges — a typical action of nicotine on the rabbit's EEG — significantly higher doses of nicotine are required in hypothyroid animals. In these animals, the nicotine-induced hippocampal theta rhythm which preceeds the seizure discharges is characterized by a significantly slower frequency. Thus, the action of nicotine on hippocampal electrical activity is greatly depressed in hypothyroid rabbits. Doses of pentetrazol producing preconvulsive changes and seizure discharges in cortical electrical activity are identical in normal and hypothyroid animals. Therefore, the central actions of various drugs may be influenced to a quantitatively very different extent by hypothyroidism.

Notes: Summary The lethal dose of g-strophanthine and thevetine B was determined by infusion experiments with various infusion speeds in guinea pigs. In 71 experiments with g-strophanthine and 64 experiments with thevetine B a functional relationship between the lethal dose and infusion speed was established by means of statistical methods. The LD/speed function was characterized by a range of overtitration (rapid infusions), by a flat minimum with a practically constant LD and by a range with an increasing LD with decreasing infusion speed (influence of elimination). The optimal infusion time (Topt) and optimal infusion speed (Vopt) for a maximal utilization of glycoside resulted in a minimal value of LD (LDmin) and could be numerically determined by graphical evaluation of the established LD/speed function. These values were for g-strophanthine: Topt=31,8 min, Vopt=0,0063 mg/kg/min, LDmin:0,20 mg/kg. For thevetine B: Topt=22,7 min, Vopt=0,133 mg/kg/min, LDmin : 3,02 mg/kg. From the parameters of the LD/speed and the LD/time function the values for the fixation and detoxification constants of both glycosides were calculated. With thevetine B there was a striking correlation between the clinically observed rapid onset of action and the high value of the fixation constant.
