    Notes: Crevice corrosion experiments on pure iron were carried out in a 0.5 M acetate buffer with varied chloride concentrations. Changes in resultant currents and morphology due to crevice attack were explained by IR potential drop mechanisms. The specimens experienced potential drop inside the crevice, which resulted in the formation of passive, active, and hydrogen evolution regions. The passive region did not exist in the electrolyte containing 0.05 M and 0.5 M chloride. Hydrogen evolution, which occurred inside the crevice was measured on rear side of the specimenusing hydrogen permeation test. The results suggest that the hydrogen produced inside the crevice is measurable using a permeation test. The entry of diffusible hydrogen showed a significant increase with the addition of chloride into the acetate buffer

    Notes: The transient natural convective flow and heat transfer in a combined vertical and horizontal enclosure have been studied. The Galerkin's finite element method coupled with Eulerian velocity correction scheme for pressure prediction has been employed. A detailed parametric study has been undertaken for evaluating the effects of Rayleigh number (Ra), width ratio (WR), and prescribed boundary conditions. The results indicate that the flow and isothermal patterns are strongly dependent on Ra and WR. Comparison with the results of vertical and horizontal enclosures indicates that the flow and heat transfer phenomena inside complex shaped cavities may be approximated in terms of the processes within vertical or horizontal sub-domains. This appears to be reasonably valid if opposite walls of the enclosure are parallel. It is also observed that for certain types of boundary conditions, steady solutions do not exist at high Rayleigh numbers.

    Notes: The removal efficiency of lead [Pb(II)], zinc [Zn(II)], nickel [Ni(II)] and chromium [Cr(VI)] from aqueous solutions by adsorption on non-conventional materials (rice husk and sawdust) in its natural form and on their chemically modified form is presented. It is found that adsorption potential varies as a function of contact time, concentration, particle size, pH and flow rate. Of all the low cost adsorbents used in this study, sawdust is found to possess greater adsorption efficiency for all metals than rice husk under identical experimental conditions. Chemically activated sawdust could remove 95 percent of Pb(II), 93 percent of Zn(II), 80 percent of Ni(II) and 75 percent of Cr(VI) from the metal bearing industrial effluents.

    Notes: Nitrogen ion implantation on a Ti6Al4V alloy with 70KeV energy was carried out at different doses ranging from 5 × 1015 to 2.5 × 1017ions/cm2. The implanted samples were subjected to open circuit potential/time measurement and cyclic polarization studies to evolve the optimum dose which can give good corrosion resistance in a simulated body fluid condition. The results show that there was an increase in corrosion resistance with increased doses up to 7 × 1016ions/cm2, beyond which it started to decrease. The stability of the passive film at a higher potential was assessed by potentiotransient techniques after impressing a constant potential of 1.5V for three hours. The results of the investigation indicate that nitrogen ion implantation can be used as a viable method to improve the corrosion resistance of orthopaedic implant devices made of Ti6Al4V alloy. The nature of the stable passive film and its influence on corrosion resistance are discussed in this paper.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Mit Hilfe der Finitelement-Methode wurde die Doppeldiffusion bei natürlicher Konvektion in einem fluidgetränktem porösen Medium untersucht, wobei ein verallgemeinertes Modell für poröse Medien Verwendung fand, das sich sowohl für Darcysches, wie für nicht-Darcysches Fluidverhalten in einem achsialsymmetrischen Ringraum eignet. Aus den Ergebnissen geht hervor, daß die Darcy-Zahl als zusätzlicher Parameter eingeführt werden muß, um das Strömungsverhalten im nicht-Darcyschen Regime verstehen zu können. Die Porosität hat großen Einfluß auf den Wärme- und Stoffaustausch, so daß bei höheren Darcy- und Rayleigh-Zahlen diesbezüglich Unterschiede bis über 25% auftreten können. Im Vergleich mit den speziellen Modellen nach Darcy, Brinkman und Forchheimer liefert das hier untersuchte verallgemeinerte Modell die geringsten Wärme- und Stoffflüsse. Es zeigt sich ferner, daß die Vergrößerung des Radienverhältnisses höhere Nusselt- und Sherwood- Zahlen entlang der Innenwand zur Folge hat.
    Notes: Abstract Double-diffusive natural convection in a fluid saturated porous medium has been investigated using the finite element method. A generalised porous medium model is used to study both Darcy and non-Darcy flow regimes in an axisymmetric cavity. Results indicate that the Darcy number should be a separate parameter to understand flow characteristics in non-Darcy regime. The influence of porosity on heat and mass transfer is significant and the transport rates may differ by 25% or more, at higher Darcy and Rayleigh numbers. When compared with the Darcy and other specialised models of Brinkman and Forchheimer, the present generalised model predicts the least heat and mass transfer rates. It is also observed that an increase in radius ratio leads to higher Nusselt and Sherwood numbers along the inner wall.

    Notes: A numerical method for predicting viscous flows in complex geometries has been presented. Integral mass and momentum conservation equations are deploved and these are discretized into algebraic form through numerical quadrature. The physical domain is divided into a number of non-orthogonal control volumes which are isoparametrically mapped on to standard rectangular cells. Numerical integration for unsteady mementum equations is performed over such non-orthogonal cells. The explicitly advanced velocity components obtained from unsteady momentum equations may not necessarily satisfy the mass conservation condition in each cell. Compliance of the mass conservation equation and the consequent evolution of correct pressure distribution are accomplished through an iterative correction of pressure and velocity till divergence-free condition is obtained in each cell. The algorithm is applied on a few test problems, namely, lid-driven square and oblique cavities, developing flow in a rectangular channel and flow over square and circular cylinders placed in rectangular channels. The results exhibit good accuracy and justify the applicability of the algorithm.This Explicit Transient Algorithm for Flows in Arbitrary Geometry is given a generic name EXTRAFLAG.

    Notes: The structure of confined wakes behind a square cylinder in a channel is investigated via the numerical solution of the unsteady Navier-Stokes equations. Vortex shedding behind the cylinder induces periodicity in the flow field. Details of the phenomenon are simulated through numerical flow visualization. The unsteady periodic wake can be characterized by the Strouhal number, which varies with the Reynolds number and the blockage ratio of the channel. The periodicity of the flow is, however, damped in the downstream region of a long duct. This damping may be attributed to the influence of side walls on the flow structure.
