    Notes: Summary Cranial neural crest cells give rise to a large part of the facial structures, and disturbed development of these cells may therefore cause congenital malformations affecting the head and face. We studied the effects of increased glucose concentration on the migration and development of cranial neural crest cells, maintained in vitro for 48 h. Pre-migratory cranial neural crest cells were removed from embryos of normal and diabetic rats on gestational day 9. After 24 h in 10 mmol/l glucose the cells were exposed to glucose concentrations of 10, 30, or 50 mmol/l for another 24 h. The cultures were photographed at 24 h and 48 h in a phase-contrast microscope to evaluate cell morphology, cell number, and cell migration. Exposure to 50 mmol/l glucose reduced the total number of neural crest cells, their mean migratory distance and migratory area expansion compared to cells cultured in 10 mmol/l glucose. To investigate the effect of antioxidant agents, high glucose cultures were studied after addition of N-acetylcysteine (NAC), or superoxide dismutase (SOD). Addition of NAC diminished the inhibitory effect of high glucose, whereas SOD did not offer any improvement in cell development. Neural crest cell culture from embryos of diabetic rats showed reduced cell migration in vitro at all glucose concentrations compared to normal cells. In addition, the cells from embryos of diabetic rats showed reduced migratory area expansion after culture in the basal 10 mmol/l glucose concentration, indicating that maternal diabetes permanently influences the future development of pre-migratory cranial neural crest cells. These findings indicate that high glucose concentration inhibits cranial neural crest development in vitro, and that antioxidant therapy may diminish this inhibition. Free radical oxygen species may be involved in the induction of malformations and antioxidants may therefore have a role in future attempts to block the teratogenic effects of diabetic pregnancy.     Notes: Summary An unusual tumor of the pituitary gland is reported. The most characteristic finding of the present tumor was the presence of numerous “colloid” and mucoid secretions. The cells were stellate in shape and there were intra- or intercellular lumina which were lined by many microvilli and occasional cilia. There were also large accumulations of 10 nm filaments in their cytoplasm. Junctional devices were well formed at the points of mutual contact of these cells. They thus correspond to fetal follicular cells of the anterior pituitary lobe. For this reason, “folliculo-stellate cell adenoma of the pituitary” would best characterize this hitherto undescribed neoplasm.

The extracts were polarographically assayed for respiration-stimulating activity toward homologous spermatozoa.     Notes: Abstract The infrared multiple-photon single-frequency decomposition (IRMPD) of CBrClF2 was examined as functions of laser wavenumber, laser fluence, and partial pressure of CBrClF2. The initial step was the scission of a C-Br bond. In the presence of O2 the carbon-containing product was CF2O and its subsequent hydrolysis gave CO2. The initial dissociation was highly 13C selective at wavenumbers below 1014 cm−1. CBrClF2 decomposed at relatively low fluences as compared to CHClF2. However, the decomposition yield rapidly decreased with increasing pressure. In the large-scale irradiation experiment using about 8 J pulse at 1 Hz, we obtained a carbon yield of 0.41 μmol per pulse at a 13C-atom fraction of 17% for a mixture of 10 Torr CBrClF2 and 10 Torr O2, and a carbon yield of 0.17 μmol per pulse at a fraction of 29% for a mixture of 20 Torr CBrClF2 and 20 Torr O2. The IRMPD of CHClF2 gave a carbon yield of 0.18 μmol per pulse at 48% for 10 Torr neat CHClF2 and yield of 0.25 μmol at 52% for 20 Torr CHClF2. The large-scale irradiation experiment was also carried out for mixtures of CBr2F2 and O2. CHClF2 is the most productive of 13C.

    Notes: Abstract A case of a 12-year-old girl with a multiple auto-immune disorder is reported. She showed Hashimoto thyroiditis which subsequently developed to hashitoxicosis and distal renal tubular acidosis at 5 years of age, pernicious anaemia at the age of 9 and severe encephalopathy at the age of 12. Laboratory studies revealed very high titres of anti-microsomal and anti-thyroglobulin antibodies and positive gastric parietal cell antibody. As to the encephalopathy, positive oligoclonal IgG bands and high values of IgG index and IgG synthesis ratio in CSF were observed with aggravation of her neurological symptoms. High-dose steroid therapy was effective toward the encephalopathy. Paediatricians should pay careful attention to patients with Hashimoto thyroiditis for association with other auto-immune disorders.

    Notes: Summary The authors studied the changes in neurological signs and cerebral circulation by using dynamic CT scans before and after cranioplasty in six externally decompressed patients. Five of the 6 patients showed some improvements in neurological signs. The results of the dynamic CT scans in 6 cases suggested that increases of bilateral cerebral blood flow may play a role in their neurological improvement.
