    Notes: The induction period, tind, of CaCO3 precipitated from an aqueous CaCl2–Na2CO3 solution is investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The tind of primary nucleation is measured by applying a conductivity method and estimated by using the rapid coagulation theory. By using a novel data acquisition system in the experiment, tind can be easily estimated from the desupersaturation curve, which is a plot of solution conductivity against time. The desupersaturation curves obtained at various levels of supersaturation reveal the important features at different desupersaturation stages, including clusters coagulation, formation of critical nuclei, growth of critical nuclei, detection of visible crystals and equilibrium stage. These individual stages are affected greatly by the initial supersaturation of solution. An oscillation in conductivity, which arises from the fluctuation of solution concentration, is observed between tind and tv, tv being the instant that visible crystals are detected. A comparison between theoretical and experimental results, which include the data obtained in this study and those reported in the literature, shows that the present model is satisfactory for a wide range of supersaturation, and unifies the homogeneous and heterogeneous mechanisms of nucleation. The results also imply that the interparticle forces between clusters are important for the formation of critical nuclei in the primary nucleation regime. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The growth kinetics and contact nucleation of calcite crystals were studied in a pH-stat crystallizer. Large seed crystals up to 230 μm were successfully prepared by the gel growth technique. The crystal growth data over a wide range of crystal sizes were evaluated from titration curves by an initial slope method and then analyzed by the two-step model. The mass-transfer and surface integration rates were found to be functions of crystal size with the exception of mass-transfer rates of small crystals less than 10 μm. The controlling step of crystal growth process was tested using the effectiveness factor concept. Large seed crystals of calcite induced contact nucleation when a stainless-steel impeller was used for agitation. The important features of contact nucleation for calcite crystals were explored and compared with those of soluble substances.

    Notes: A pH-stat MSMPR crystallizer is used to obtain the nucleation rate equation of calcite formed in the Na2CO3-CaCl2 reacting system. The experiments are conducted for seeded and unseeded runs. Effects of breakage and agglomeration on the crystalsize distribution are demonstrated. In a continuous operation, the agglomeration of nuclei followed by the breakage of agglomerates occurs at the transient state, while the agglomeration is significant at the steady state. Taking crystal agglomeration into account, the corrected nucleation rate and agglomeration rate are obtained simultaneously. The agglomeration rate is a function of relative supersaturation and magma density, and the corrected nucleation rate is approximately two- to five-fold of the apparent nucleation rate, which is the nucleation rate without considering the agglomeration effect. Discussed also is the formation of calcium carbonate polymorphism.

    Notes: The growth phenomena, mechanism, and kinetics of naphthalene crystal from supercritical CO2 solution were studies by using a single-crystal technique. Distinct growth features were observed, including the development of individuals from the seeds and the sprouting of plates from the individuals. The surface integration proceeded by two-dimensional nucleation mechanism at face corners and by subsequent spreading of the nuclei. The measured growth rates as functions of supersaturation and solubility were consistent with the derived growth-rate equations, based on the corner nucleation mechanism. In comparison with crystal growth from conventional media, the growth of naphthalene crystals from supercritical CO2 solution is similar to liquid-solution growth as far as growth mechanism and kinetics are concerned.
