Notes: Abstract. Leukocyte transendothelial migration is an essential process in inflammation and the immune response. The mechanisms involved in leukocyte adhesion to the endothelium, forming the first step in leukocyte extravasation, have been fairly well documented. However, subsequent steps, which include de-adhesion, coupled with locomotion, remain largely unknown. As part of our efforts to study leukocyte transendothelial migration, we previously established a monoclonal antibody (mAb) that sequentially up-regulates and down-regulates β2 integrin-dependent adhesion of human neutrophils, as well as transendothelial migration in vitro. The molecule recognized by this mAb is a glycosyl phosphatidyl inositol, (GPI)-anchored glycoprotein. This protein may prove to be a new member of the family of integrin-associated, GPI-anchored proteins, which also includes urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (uPAR), lipopolysaccharide (LPS)/LPS binding protein (LBP) receptor (CD14), and Fcγ receptor IIIB (CD16b); all of which are regulators of integrin function. The mechanisms involved in β2 integrin regulation by this new GPI-anchored glycoprotein are discussed.

Notes: Summary Fas ligand (FasL) is highly expressed in testicular tissues and thought to be responsible for protection from allograft rejection by inducing apoptosis of anti-graft activated T cells. FasL-expressing islets have been shown to induce a granulocyte-mediated inflammatory reaction. We investigated whether a graft can be protected from alloimmune responses by manipulating the Fas/FasL-system. We transplanted allogeneic islets under the kidney capsule of streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice together with testicular tissue. Significant prolongation of survival of C3H islet allograft was observed in C57BL/6 (B6) recipients transplanted with C3H testicular tissue, but not in those transplanted with C3H-gld testicular tissue expressing non-functional FasL. No significant prolongation was observed in B6-lpr recipients expressing non-functional Fas. Immunohistochemical staining of C3H testicular tissue in the composite graft showed a high expression of FasL, but not that of the C3H-gld testicular tissue. In situ terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUDP-biotin catalysed DNA nick-end labelling (TUNEL) staining of a composite graft of C3H islet and testicular tissue in B6 recipients demonstrated extensive apoptosis of infiltrating mononuclear cells around the graft. The protective effect of C3H testicular tissue was abrogated when anti-FasL monoclonal antibody was administered i. p. postoperatively. Our results suggest that FasL-positive testicular allografts protect composite islet allografts and indicate that manipulation of Fas/FasL mediated apoptosis is a suitable strategy for controlling rejection of islet allografts. Notes: Abstract Time-dependent velocity profiles V z (z, t) have been measured in a cylindrical Couette system for a range of Reynolds numbers corresponding to wavy vortex flow (WVF) and modulated wavy vortex flow (MWV). The spatial distribution of the power spectrum was obtained and the behaviour of the dynamic properties of WVF and MWV was investigated with respect to Reynolds number (Re) at four corners of cells (inside-outside and Inflow-Outflow). All modes of f 1, f 2 and B were found to be equally strong and broad at different corners for lower Re number. At large Re, however, f 2 remains broad only at the outside-Inflow corner, while B is strong at Outflow. It was also found that B disappears at the outside-Inflow corner for R * 〉 18. These results suggest that the dynamic properties of WVF and MWV would have a spatial dependence within a cell structure scale.

Notes: Abstract  Circular and spiral waves are observed in the flow between a rotating and a stationary disk. These waves are generated by instabilities of the stationary disk boundary layer. This experimental work is devoted to their study by means of flow visualization and measurements of the associated velocity fields. In particular, instantaneous velocity profiles are measured by ultrasonic Doppler anemometry. The spatio-temporal characteristics of the waves are studied with the help of Fourier transforms of these velocity signals.

Notes: Summary  Primary intracranial malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) is very rare, and not much is known about its clinical features. The authors report a case of left temporal leptomeningeal MFH, with consequent cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dissemination and pulmonary metastasis. The clinical features of this case and the therapeutic prognosis of 17 cases reported previously in the literature were reviewed.

Notes: Abstract Multilayer InAs-GaAs structures with an array of vertically aligned InAs quantum dots in a GaAs matrix, grown by molecular-beam epitaxy, were investigated by crystal truncation rods and high-resolution x-ray diffractometry methods. It was shown that the formation of scattering objects such as vertically aligned quantum dots in the structures strongly influences the mechanism of diffraction scattering of x-rays and changes the spatial distribution of the diffracted radiation. This is explained by the appearance of additional long-range order in the lateral arrangement of the scattering objects in the periodic structures, by the curving of the crystallographic planes in the periodic part of the structure, and by the quasiperiodicity of the deformation profile due to the vertically coupled quantum dots. The observed spatial distribution of the diffracted intensity can be explained qualitatively on the basis of a new model where the scattering layers with quantum dots consist of defect-free, coherently coupled, InAs and GaAs clusters.

Notes: Both amyloses and amylopectins from sago starches with low (280 BU, low-v) and high (735 BU, high-v) viscosities on amylography differed in molecular structures. The low-v amylopectin (average chain length, c.I., 22) was a smaller molecule with a slightly higher amount of long chains than the high-v amylopectin (c.I., 22). The number-and weight-average degrees of polymerization of the low-v amylose were 2490 and 5090, respectively, which were half those of the high-v amylose. The low-v amylose had a lower molar fraction of branched molecules with a shorter inner chain length than the high-v amylose, but both branched molecules had a similar number (17–19) of chains on the average. Both starch granules had the same crystalline type (Ca) and amylose content (24%).
