Notes: Nanoparticles of cobalt and nickel embedded in AlN matrix have been prepared by ion implantation or sputter deposition with average diameters ranging from 0.8 to 9 nm. The average magnetic moment per atom versus the average cluster diameter was measured either by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism and/or by SQUID magnetometry. The resulting values are always smaller than the bulk ones. An interpretation is given in terms of an interaction between the atoms located at the cluster surface and the AlN matrix, leading to a magnetically dead layer about 0.1 nm thick. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Synchrotron radiation from the storage ring BESSY-I is used to excite the S 2p regime (150–190 eV) of sulfur aggregates Sn, n=2–8. Valence states are identified in photoion yield spectra of mass selected Sn+ cations in combination with extended Hückel calculations. Mass spectra, partial ion yields, and photoelectron–photoion–photoion (PEPIPICO) coincidence spectra are reported, yielding a consistent picture of massive decay processes occurring in the S 2p regime. PEPIPICO spectra especially give detailed information on the fragmentation mechanisms of doubly charged aggregates. It is shown that most cation pairs are formed via charge separation originating from S8++. We derive values for the kinetic energy releases in multistep fragmentations assuming that charge separation is driven by Coulomb explosion. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The construction and performance of a double pass cylindrical mirror analyzer (CMA) is described. This electron energy analyzer is retractable and has a diameter of less than 1.5 in. (30 mm). This analyzer is superior in performance, for gas phase photoemission experiments, to the single pass CMA of similar diameter. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The reaction89Y(α, 2n γ) was used to populate excited states in91Nb. The de-excitation of these states was studied by in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy, involving the measurement of excitation functions, angular distributions and life-times. A 17/2− isomeric state at 2034 keV and withT 1/2=3.8±0.2 μs was observed; it is interpreted as the highest-spin state of the {(g 9/2)2 (p 1/2)} proton configuration. The experimental results are compared with other published data and with shell-model calculations.

Notes: Abstract Two Pd-Dy/γ-Al2O3 catalysts, with 1 wt.% Dy and various Pd loadings (0.1 and 0.5 wt.%) have been investigated by EXAFS at the Dy LIII-edge, and compared with 1 % Dy/γ-Al2O3. The Dy-carrier interaction was found to change with the Pd dispersity.
