Notes:
Summary 1. The ways how various dermatophytes are attacking human and amimal hair were tested in vitro with the aid of the Vanbreuseghem hair test. Human hair showed nearly always perforations, sheep-, guinea pig-, and mouse hair were only affected longitudinally. Catte-, horse-, and dog hair were mainly attacked longitudinally but occasionally also showed perforations. 2. In shake cultures actions of dermatophytes on keratin were not uniform. Perforations occured less frequently, hyphae were more often agglomerated on the medulla, the cortex appeared to be attacked simultaneously from the surface and from the medulla. 3. Vitamin B2 components stimulated, Biotin, vitamin C and vitamin F inhibited keratolytic activities of dermatophytes. Other vitamins acted indifferently and showed changes of the keratinase production only in adequate concentration. 4. Surface active substances of all groups inhibited the kerationlytic activity in a concentration essentially lower than the growth inhibiting concentration. 5. Keratinolytic activity is hardly changed when bacteriostatic antibiotics are added. Griseofulvin and Actidion inhibit growth and keratinase production simultaneously and in the same ratio. Mycostatin, however, causes inversely proportionate effects, i. e. when kerationlytic activity remains evident, growth appears to be inhibited. 6. KCl stimulates the keratinolytic production of dermatophytes, other sea water minerals act as inhibitors. 7. The course of disease in experimental infection of guinea pigs was more severe after application of keratinase stimulating substances, milder when keratinase inhibitors were applied.
