Notes: Abstract An outdoor study was undertaken using polyethylene containers to assess the suitability of different organic residues, soybean straw (Glycine max L. Merril.), wheat straw (Triticum aestivum L.), maize stover (Zea mays L.), chickpea straw (citer arietinum L.) and city garbage, as food for the tropical epigeic earthwormPerionyx excavatus, and to assess the influence of this earthworm on the decomposition of these materials. Maize stover was found to be the most suitable of the food materials used. Population growth ofP. excavatus was enhanced by addition of these organic materials in the temperature range 24°-30°C, while the population was adversely affected above 30°C in a vermiculture system. Addition of earthworms accelerated the breakdown of residues, which ultimately resulted in a lowering of the C:N ratio, water-soluble carbon and carbohydrates, and increased ash percentage and cation exchange capacity compared with their respective controls.

Notes: Experiments are described which show that sucrose considerably reduces the freezing potential of very dilute solutions of alkali halides, NH4Cl and (NH4)2CO3 while urea enhances the magnitude of such potentials. Results have been explained on the basis of a hypothetical model based on nonequilibrium structure of ice containing hydrogen bonded structure and free water molecules in which foreign ions are incorporated during freezing and the growth of phase occurs by the acquisition of hydronium and hydroxyl ions which form free water molecules in the nonequilibrium ice phase.

Notes: Thermoelectrets of polyvinyl chloride (PVC)–polyethylene blends were prepared and their thermally stimulated discharge current was studied. The results are discussed in terms of space charge that leads to induced dipole formation. The results indicate that the contribution of PVC dipoles to the total polarization of polyblend thermoelectrets is either insignificant, or is masked by the space-charge polarization that leads to induced dipole formation.

Notes: A compact low-power long-life sealed-off cw CO2 laser has been developed by incorporating a catalyst-coated outer jacket that helps to regenerate CO2 from the dissociation products formed during discharge. Maintaining the catalyst at an optimized temperature prevented CO2 adsorption in its bulk and resulted in the required level of CO oxidation activity. The laser system has been operated during the day for the past five months at a constant output level of about 4 W. The gas analysis performed at different catalyst temperatures suggests that although the presence of CO in large amounts is detrimental, an optimum concentration of carbon monoxide supports the CO2 laser operation. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Electrical conduction in a polyblend of poly (methyl methacrylate) and poly (vinyl acetate) is studied as a function of voltage and temperature with three different electrodes: aluminum, copper, and silver. The results show that the Schottky–Richardson emission is dominant in the present case. The values of Schottky field-lowering constant β, the effective metal-insulator potential barrier, and the activation energy involved in the conduction are reported.

Notes: Abstract Solvent-cast films and hot-pressed pellets of BaTiO3-poly vinylidene fluoride (PVDF) composites in different weight ratios were prepared and their X-ray diffractograms were taken. The diffraction patterns indicate that BaTiO3 has cubic structure in the film samples, while in the hot-pressed pellets, orthorhombic and tetragonal phases of BaTiO3 coexist.

Notes: Abstract Mica powder was dispersed in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) in different percentages by weight and the thermally stimulated discharge current of the composites was studied. The results are discussed in terms of dipolar and space charge polarization that leads to induced dipole formation. Activation energies have been calculated for all the samples by the initial rise method.
