    Notes: 3C-SiC p-type epilayers were grown to thicknesses of 1.5, 3, 6 and 10 μm on 2.5° off-axisSi(001) substrates by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Silane and propane were used as precursors.Structural analysis of epilayers was performed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM),high-resolution x-ray diffractometry (HRXRD), and Raman spectroscopy. TEM showed defectdensities (stacking faults, twins and dislocations) decreasing with increasing distance from the SiC/Siinterface as the lattice mismatch stress is relaxed. This observation was corroborated by a monotonicdecrease in HRXRD peak width (FWHM) from 780 arcsecs (1.5 μm thick epilayer) to 350 arcsecs (10μm thick epilayer). Significant further reduction in x-ray FWHM is possible because the minimumFWHM detected is greater than the theoretical FWHM for SiC (about 12 arcsecs). Ramanspectroscopy also indicates that the residual biaxial in-plane strain decreases with increasing epilayerthickness initially, but becomes essentially constant between 6 and 10 μm. Structural defect densityshows the most significant reduction in the first 2 μm of growth. Phosphorus implantation was usedto generate n+/p junctions for the measurement of the critical electric field in 3C-SiC. Based oncurrent-voltage analyses, the critical electric field in p-type 3C-SiC with a doping of 2x1017 cm-3 is1.3x106 V/cm

    Notes: Abstract We have experimentally investigated the interaction of high-power neodymium laser pulses in the intensity range 1013–1014 W/cm2 with flat low-density (0.5–10 mg/cm3) agar-agar targets under conditions of interest for problems of inertial nuclear fusion. Optical and x-ray methods with high temporal and spatial resolution were used to examine the dependence of absorption and scattering of the incident beam on the initial mean density and thickness of the irradiated samples. We show that when a porous target is irradiated, a bulk absorption layer of high-temperature plasma is produced inside the target whose dimensions are determined by the initial density of the material. The time dependence and spectral composition of the harmonics 2ω 0 and 3ω 0/2 observed in the plasma-scattered radiation are measured. A theoretical model is developed that describes the interaction of high-power laser pulses with a porous medium. Predictions of the model, based on the hypothesis of two stages of homogenization of the target material—a fast stage (0.1–0.3 ns) and a slow stage (1–3 ns), are in good agreement with the experimental data.

    Notes: In Taiwanese waters, the morphologically similar elvers ofAnguilla japonica and A. marmorata can be distinguished easily at the following loci examined: CK-D*, LDH-B*,sMDH-A* and sMDH-B*. Among these, CK-D* and LDH-B* have fixed allelic differences which can be used as a synoptic key for easy discrimination of the elvers of these two species.

    Notes: Abstract The temperature microstimulation of the semicircular canal (heat bursts lasting about 2 sec with a peak amplitude of 0.5–5.0°C) can be regarded as an analog of angular acceleration acting within the cavity of the given canal; the combination of temperature microstimulations targeted simultaneously on several canals can serve as a physical model of accelerated rotation having complex spatial characteristics. The recording of the activity of neurons of the vestibular nuclei of the frog (n=278) in response to temperature microstimulation of the canals showed that 80% of the neurons have inputs from one to two canals and only 20% from three to six canals. The distribution of laterality was characterized by the predominance of ipsilateral inputs: 201 neurons (72.3%) had only ipsilateral inputs; 14 neurons (5%) had only contralateral inputs; 63 neurons (22.7%) had both inputs. The ipsilateral horizontal (67.6%) and the posterior (61.9%) were the most effective inputs; while among the contralateral, the posterior (21.2%) canals were the most effective; the least effective were the contralateral horizontal (8.6%) and the anterior (5.0%) canals. The presence of latent canal inputs (both excitatory and inhibitory) which showed up in combination with effective inputs was demonstrated.

    Notes: Abstract The effects of 20 mM tetraethylammonium (TEA) and 5 mM 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) on mechanically and electrically excitable membranes of Pacinian corpuscles were investigated using the air gap technique for producing constant superfusion and recording electrical response at the receptor. The effects of TEA led to a 150% rise in the duration of receptor potential, the amplitude of which declined by 40%. No statistically significant changes in response to mechanical stimulation could be detected after applying 4-AP to the receptor membrane. The two blockers mentioned did modify the membrane of the first nodes of Ranvier, producing a 2–3-fold increase in the duration of action potentials. Computations based on the Dodge model would indicate that the observed effects may be explained by inhibition of voltage-dependent potassium channels which help to transform receptor current into spike response in the intact receptor.
