Notes: Summary Surface morphology of pericytes of the subepidermal capillary network of rat skin was studied by scanning electron microscopy. Pericytes showed considerable variation in shape, one end of the spectrum representing a fusiform cell body and lateral projections, the other end a club-like, undulated appearance. Most cells of whatever form were disposed parallel to the capillary course and aligned on the dermal side of the vessels. The pericytic processes encompassed up to half of the endothelial circumference, and were not tapered but spatulated at the ends; the cells adhered to the vessel wall only in certain areas. These findings, together with our previous observation that the subepidermal capillaries exhibit fenestrations mainly at the epidermal side of the endothelial lining, suggest a possible functional role of the pericyte in control of material exchange through the vessel wall. The lateral processes of the fusiform pericytes may, by contraction, cause thinning of the capillary endothelium and the formation of fenestrae, while the club-like pericytes may straighten and push the capillary towards the epidermis, if pericytes are indeed contractile cells, as recent studies indicate.

Notes: Abstract We treated five women with hypoplasty of the breast induced by radiation. Only one of these women underwent mammaplasty with the use of a latissimus dorsi muscle flap and prosthesis. Hypoplasty of the breast is considered a result of imprudent utilization of x-ray irradiation of young patients with benign skin diseases. To prevent underdevelopment and hypoplasty, attention must be directed to the risk involved in radiation therapy for benign diseases.

Notes: Summary A case of histiocytic medullary reticulosis in a 20-year-old woman is described. This is the first dermatologic case in Japan. From our investigation it is suggested that skin lesions are the primary change in this case and that histiocytic medullary reticulosis should be regarded as a variant of malignant reticulohistiocytosis.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Eine Untersuchung über die DNS-Hydrolyse durch Meerschweinchen-Epidermis-Extrakt wurde durchgeführt.
Notes: Summary The capability of guinea pig epidermal extracts to hydrolyze deoxyribonucleic acid has been studied. The results of investigation by gel filtration on Sephadex G-75 column and by viscometry on the mode of hydrolysis of deoxyribonucleic acid by epidermal extracts revealed that deoxyribonucleic acid was degraded by both endonuclease and exonuclease activities. The exhaustive digestion by epidermal extracts yielded the complete degradation of deoxyribonucleic acid to mononucleosides or further metabolites. The enzyme systems involved in the deoxyribonucleic acid degradation include at least an endonuclease, an exonuclease and a phosphatase.

Notes: Abstract To determine if GB virus C (GBV-C) or hepatitisG (HGV) infection can be transmitted by heterosexualintercourse, we tested serum samples from 234non-drug-injecting female prostitutes for GBV-C/HGV. We used reverse transcription polymerase chainreaction to test for GBV-C/HGV RNA and ELISA forGBV-C/HGV-E2 antibody. The prevalence of total GBV-C/HGVmarker (GBV-C/HGV RNA and/or GBV-C/HGV-E2 antibody) was 58/234 (24.8%) in the prostitutes, and 7/71(8.9%) in matched controls. The GBV-C/HGV RNA andGBV-C/HGV-E2 antibody concurrence rate was 12.5% for theprostitutes, but was nil in matched controls. Total GBV-C/HGV marker was significantly higher inthe prostitutes than in matched controls. Additionally, total GBV-C/HGV marker was associated with the number ofyears engaged in prostitution after adjusting for age. We found hepatitis B virus andhepatitis C virus infections in prostitutes to beassociated with syphilis infection, but GBV-C/HGVinfection was not. Thus, it seems likely that GBV-C/HGVcan be transmitted by heterosexual intercourse, evenin the absence of syphilis.
