    Notes: Abstract A simple and effective method has been developed for the determination of the transuranium isotopes in primary coolant samples of WWER-440 type reactors. Membrane filters containing undissolved particles from about one liter coolant were destroyed by mineral acids, then americium-curium isotopes and neptunium-plutonium isotopes were coprecipitated sequentially with NdF3 based on their different redox behavior. Alpha-spectra were determined by silicon semiconductor detectors connected to multichannel analyzers. Activity ratios measured in a reactor unit with a failed fuel element were compared with calculated values of the same type of reactor under similar conditions. Parameters of the defective fuel (burnup, original enrichment) could be estimated.

    Notes: Abstract A combined procedure for sequential determination of low level activity concentrations of90Sr,241Am and Pu radionuclides is described. The analysis of α-emitters is performed by isotope dilution α-spectrometry using242Pu or236Pu and243Am tracers. Strontium-90 is analyzed by liquid scintillation counting using the double energetic windows method. The method combines the well established, procedure for Pu analysis based on anion exchange, the powerful and selective method for Sr isolation based on extraction chromatography using Sr-Spec resin and finally it includes the application of the TRU-Spec column for separation and purification of the Am fraction. The radiochemical procedure was tested using IAEA reference and intercomparison materials. Major parameters of the procedure as well as advantages and drawbacks are discussed in detail.

    Notes: Abstract As part of a detailed survey on the contamination of Polish forests90Sr activity concentrations were determined in bilberries. Elevated90Sr levels were found in several samples from north-eastern Poland. The calculated maximum90Sr surface contamination was 2 kBq·m−2. The correlation between90Sr and137Cs concentrations in bilberries was good for two sets of samples originating from two geographical areas of Poland indicating the local differences in radionuclide depositions from Chemobyl fallout.

    Notes: Abstract The concentration of 35 elements (Al, As, B, Ba, Be, Ca, Cd, Co, Cl, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Mo, N, Na, Ni, P, Pb, Rb, S, Sb, Sc, Si, Sr, Tb, Th, Ti, U, V, Yb, Zn and Zr) in six different imported, NPK, NP and K fertilizers were determined by ICP-OES in two different laboratories and by INAA. The fertilizers were labeled as 24/12 (Belgium), 46/18 (Morocco), 50% ammonium sulfate 50% K2O (Belgium), New 24/12 (Belgium), 16.8.24 (France) and 17.17.17 (France). It is clear that these fertilizers vary widely in their heavy metals and uranium content, and the accumulation of certain elements in vitally important media such as water, soil and food is undesirable from the medical point of view. The results obtained were acceptable and intercomparison between various methods was carried out.

    Notes: Abstract Samples of natural and fertilised soils were collected from Al-Gheran region, west of Tripoli, Libya. The samples were investigated by means of INAA and ED-XRF for Al, Si, K, Ca, Sc, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Zn, Br, Rb, Sr, Y, Zr, Nb, Cs, Ba, Hf, Ta, Pb and Th. The results indicate that the concentrations of K, Ca, Zn, Sr and Pb are 2–4 fold higher in fertilised compared to natural soil, while the concentrations of Al, Si, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Rb, Y, Nb, Cs, Ba Ta and Th are nearly the same in all samples. Mn and Fe values in two arable soils have been found to be 4–6 times lower than the average concentration in the earth's surface soils. This study concludes that, although the levels of some trace elements important for human health are very low in both natural and fertilised soils. Further research is needed to understand the full significance of the distribution transfer and toxicity of trace elements introduced in imported fertilisers.

    Notes: Abstract A simple and rapid method has been developed for the separation and determination of total radiostrontium in soil. The method consists of three basic steps: oxalate precipitation to remove bulk potassium, chromatographic separation of strontium from most inactive and radioactive interferences utilizing a crown ether (Sr. Spec, EIChroM Industries, Il. USA) and oxalate precipitation of strontium to evaluate the chemical yield. Radiostrontium is then determined by liquid scintillation counting of the dissolved precipitate. When 10 g samples of soil are used, the sensitivity of the method is about 10 Bq/kg. The chemical yield is about 80%. The separation and determination of radiostrontium can be carried out in about 8 hours.

    Notes: Abstract In the execution of disposal of low and intermediate level radioactive wastes, it is important to evaluate accurately the kind and quantity of each radionuclide in the wastes. For such an evaluation, correlation of non-gamma-emitting nuclides based on gamma-emitting nuclides is recommended and regarded as a practical method. This method necessitates a completion of a highly accurate and reliable nondestructive assay system of gamma-emitting nuclides for practical use. In 1992, in support of the new waste disposal program in Hungary, Paks NPP initiated a waste characterization program to determine the radiological properties of its radwastes. A segmented gamma scanning system has been set up to measure the gamma-emitting nuclides in 200 litre low level drums following in-drum compaction. In the framework of the program a radiochemical analysis sub-program was started to determine the long-lived non-gamma emitting radionuclides, mainly those listed in the US regulatory document (10CFR61). The radionuclides of interest have been3H,14C,90Sr,55Fe,59Ni,99Tc,129I and TRUs. Sample preparation techniques and measurement methods have been selected and used. Newly developed or adopted methods have been tested on real liquid radwaste streams such as concentrates, ion-exchange resin and sludge. The measurements taken so far have revealed brand new information and data on radiological composition of waste of WWER-type reactors. In the next stage of the characterisation program attempt will be made for providing correlation factors between the gamma and non-gamma-emitting radionuclides in different waste streams. Short description of the methods and results on waste inventory are given by highlighting the problem areas.
