    Notes: Neutral density profiles are measured in the outer third of the plasma of the TEXT tokamak in conjunction with ion temperature measurements using the far line wings of a Hα profile. The advantage of this technique is that it does not require a radial inversion of the data to obtain a measure of the local neutral density. The ion temperature profiles are compared with the results from a neutral particle analyzer, and the neutral profiles with the results of a numerical code which solves a system of coupled linear equations describing particle transport from a neutral source.

    Notes: The effects of radial electric field on charged particle motion and transport in the toroidal magnetic system have been studied both analytically and numerically. The effects of radial electric field on particle orbits are examined, allowing for the relatively large and strongly sheared field observed in some experiments. It is found that ion radial mobility due to the combined effects of radial electric field and charge exchange collisions can dramatically affect the ion transport and orbit loss near the tokamak edge. These properties may help understand the formation of transport barrier near the tokamak plasma edge during high confinement mode (H-mode) discharge and explain the asymmetry between bias voltage and confinement in biased-electrode-induced H-mode. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Monte Carlo simulation studies for ion orbit loss in limiter tokamaks show a poloidal asymmetry in ion loss arising from differences in ion orbit geometry. Since electron loss to the limiter is uniformly distributed because of its tiny orbit width, the nonuniform ion loss could cause a poloidal electric field that would tend to make the ion loss to the limiter more uniform. A simple analytical derivation of this poloidal electric field and a discussion of its effects on ion movement and transport are also presented.

    Notes: The character of charged particle motion in an axisymmetric toroidal system with a constant radial electric field is investigated both analytically and numerically. Ion radial mobility caused by the combined effects of the radial electric field and charge exchange is found. A simple moment argument in the banana regime matches the simulation results well. Relation of present work and high confinement (H-mode) experiment is also discussed.

    Notes: Impedance measurements and magnetic probes are used to study driven global Alfvén eigenmodes in a small tokamak. The probes measure the field amplitudes in the outer region of the plasma, complementing earlier laser measurements in the plasma interior. An approximate analytic model is used to help determine mode numbers. The measured field profiles and impedance values are found to compare favorably with the predictions of a cylindrical, kinetic theory calculation. Measured widths of resonances are consistently found to be larger than theoretical predictions.

    Notes: A new model for the structure of the radial electric-field profile in the edge during the high confinement (H mode) is proposed. Charge separation caused by the difference between electron and ion gyromotion, or more importantly in the tokamak, the banana motion (halo effect) can self-consistently produce an electric dipole moment that causes the sheared radial electric field. The calculated results based on the model are consistent with DIII-D [Fusion Technol. 8, 441 (1985)] and Tokamak Experiment for Technology Oriented Research (TEXTOR) [J. Nucl. Mater. 122, 123, 1124 (1984)] experimental results.

    Notes: Closed form Green's functions are derived for convective–diffusive systems in cylindrical geometries. They are of the form e−αr 2I0(βr), where I0 is the modified Bessel function and α and β depend on time via e−t. These solutions can be used to model a variety of time-dependent transport experiments, such as pulsed impurity transport, oscillating gas puff, perturbative rf heating, and sawtooth heat pulse propagation. A successful comparison of the authors' profiles with pulsed impurity injection experiments on the Texas Experimental Tokamak (TEXT) [K. W. Gentle, Nucl. Technol./Fusion 1, 479 (1981)] is presented.

    Notes: Comparison of experiments with theory leads to a reasonably complete understanding of impurity rotation in Ohmic plasmas in a tokamak. In the experiments, the components of the impurity rotation velocity were derived from measurements of the Doppler shift of carbon spectral emission. Neoclassical theory for rotation was evaluated using measured plasma profiles and compared with experiment. The comparisons suggest that plasma toroidal rotation is damped (but not quenched) by momentum loss due to ion–neutral charge exchange and that the damping can now be accurately predicted.

    Notes: We present initial results from a new q diagnostic for TEXT-Upgrade. This method is based on using a toroidal array of detectors to determine the plane in which beam-injected neutrals are emitted after two charge exchange collisions. The potential advantages are low cost, full plasma accessibility, and good time resolution. Our initial series of experiments of TEXT-U establish the feasibility of this technique. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
