    Notes: Summary The process of assembly and secretion of lipoproteins is discussed with particular reference to the role of lipids. The majority of circulating lipoproteins is produced by the liver (80%) with the remainder being supplied by the intestine. The liver secretes both very low density lipoproteins and high density lipoproteins, but the assembly and secretion of these two types of particles may follow different routes. The major lipid components of lipoproteins are triacylglycerols, cholesterol, cholesterol esters and phospholipids. The biosynthesis of these lipids occurs on membranes of the endoplasmic reticulum, with many of the enzymes also being present in the Golgi; the roles of these two subcellular organelles in the assembly of lipoproteins are discussed. There appears to be a compartmentalization of lipids in cells, such that defined pools, often those newly-synthesized, are preferred, or even required, for lipoprotein assembly. The process of hepatic very low density lipoprotein secretion appears to be regulated by the supply of lipids. Indeed, the synthesis of new lipid may be a major driving force in lipoprotein assembly and secretion.

    Notes: Abstract The technique of neutron activation analysis (NAA) was first demonstrated in papers by Georg Hevesy and Hilde Levi in 1936 and 1938. Applications of NAA to biological tissues did not appear in the literature until approximately a decade later, when analysts obtained access to high flux nuclear fission reactors. NAA studies of trace element imbalances in specific diseases developed rapidly in the 1980s with the availability of affordable high resolution, high efficiency, solid-state gamma-ray detectors. A brief history of NAA as related to trace element analyses of human tissues is presented and recent NAA studies of relationships of elemental imbalances to the etiology or pathogenesis of selected diseases are reviewed.

    Notes: Abstract The determination of neptunium-237 (237Np) traditionally has been performed by alpha spectrometry or neutron activation analysis. These methods are labor intensive and require several days for completion. Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) is a possible alternative for237Np determinations. This paper describes the analytical method developed for samples that have significant levels of uranium present. The lower reporting limits achievable by ICP-MS are competitive with the counting methods, but the real advantage for this laboratory lies in the lower cost and faster turnaround time provided by ICP-MS.

    Notes: Abstract Background soils from areas around the United States Department of Energy facilities in Oak Ridge, Tennessee were characterized as part of an environmental restoration project. The data obtained in this project were validated using guidelines from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Contract Laboratory Program (CLP), when EPA methods were used. However, there are no final EPA guidelines for validation of data obtained using radiochemical analytical methods, so procedures for validation had to be developed. This paper will describe the validation guidelines that were developed for neutron activation analysis (NAA) data and discuss the regulatory basis for them.

    Notes: Abstract It has been suggested that several age-related neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis may be related to environmental toxins. Bulk sample multielement analyses by INAA alone are not adequate to define the role of trace elements in these diseases. A multitechnique approach has been developed that incorporates 14 MeV, instrumental reactor, radiochemical, and pre-irradiation chemical neutron activation analysis, together with laser microprobe mass spectrometry. The analytical scheme is able to provide bulk or protein normalized elemental concentrations, as well as microstructural, cellular, and subcellular localization information.
