Notes: In the following discussion I wish to demonstrate the basic homogeneity of Barth's thinking on the relationship between Divine self-disclosure and Religion. In order to restrict the discussion, reference will be made to the second edition of the commentary on Romans, the first volume of the Church Dogmatics, the essays: ‘The Humanity of God’and ‘The Christian Understanding of Revelation’, and volume four of the Dogmatics— for if there has been a significant change in the structure of Barth's thinking, one must expect to find such evidence in these basic sources. While the primary aim is to explore the relationship between Revelation and Religion, the discussion must necessarily take into consideration a number of secondary relationships which impinge upon the central theme at certain places. These secondary relationships as it happens, vary in accordance with the dialogical situation in which Barth formulates his argument. In Romans for example, the resurrection of Jesus occupies a pivotal position, but in the first volume of the Dogmatics he has shifted his attention to the significance of the Incarnation. Again, however, at the closing stages of volume four attention has swung back to the importance and relevance of the resurrection for Christian faith.

Notes: At the outset it is important to define the way in which some important terminology will be used in the arguments that follow:Theology in Asia is the theological reflection of Asian based or Asian oriented thinkers, for whom being in Asia does not determine the form or style of their theological activity.

Notes: Abstract Addition of Diaion HP-20 or Amberlite XAD-8 resin to the fermentation ofMicromonospora chersina ATCC 53710 enhanced the production of dynemicin A by 4.7- and 6.9-fold, respectively. Addition of resin suppressed the production of other dynemicin analogs, which comprised 65% of the dynemicin complex in the fermentation.

Notes: Abstract A series of monoclonal IgM anti-GM1 ganglioside antibodies has been cloned from peripheral blood lymphocytes of patients with multifocal motor neuropathy and Guillain-Barré syndrome. In solid-phase immunoassay, the antibodies react with GM1, and also in differing degrees to the structurally related glycolipids asialo-GM1 (GA1) and GD1b. Here we describe the binding patterns of six human anti-GM1 antibodies to epitopes within the human nervous system. Antibodies were observed to bind to motor neurons and spinal grey matter, dorsal and ventral spinal roots, dorsal root ganglion neurons, nodes of Ranvier, neuromuscular junctions and skeletal muscle. The distribution of immunoreactive epitopes, which included sensory structures, extended beyond those sites conventionally regarded as pathologically affected in anti-GM1 antibody-associated motor nerve syndromes. This undermines a model of disease pathogenesis based solely on antigen distribution. Factors other than the presence or absence of antigen, such as the local ganglioside topography, antibody penetration into, and pathophysiological vulnerability of a particular site may also influence the clinicopathological outcome of anti-GM1 antibody-mediated autoimmune attack.

Notes: Summary C4A and C4B levels were measured in serum from 246 normal individuals. Complement-mediated solubilisation, assayed using alkaline phosphatase anti-alkaline phosphatase immune complexes (IC), correlated with both C4A and C4B levels. However, C4A and C4B levels showed no correlation with solubilisation of bovine serum albumin (BSA) ICs, or with the prevention of immune precipitation of BSA or alkaline phosphatase ICs, nor with immune adherence assayed using thyroglobulin and BSA ICs.

Notes: Summary In normal serum complement prevents precipitation of antigen-antibody complexes (PIP). However rheumatoid arthritis (RA) serum contains an inhibitor of this complement-mediated function. We have undertaken two prospective studies in order to look for any relationship between the presence and levels of inhibitory activity in sera and synovial fluids (SF) of patients with RA and disease activity (study A), and the presence of systemic manifestations (nodules and vasculitis) of RA (study B). In study A, levels of inhibitory activity were highest in the sera and synovial fluids of patients with seropositive RA. However there was no correlation between the inhibitory levels and indices of generalised disease activity (articular index, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), haemoglobin, white cell and platelet counts). Local joint tenderness score correlated weakly with the inhibitory level in SF (P〈0.05). There was no correlation, however, with either the SF protein concentration or white cell count. In study B, PIP was shown to be lower in patients with the systemic manifestations of RA than in those with purely articular manifestations. PIP was particularly low in those patients with vasculitis compared to those with subcutaneous nodules. Serum levels of inhibitory activity were highest in patients with vasculitis and lowest in those with articular disease only, whereas patients with nodules had intermediate levels. Our conclusion is that inhibition of immune precipitation is not associated with disease activity, but is associated with the extra-articular manifestations of RA. The inhibitory factor may play a role in the pathogenesis of RA.

Notes: Summary Measurement of the complement activation products C1s:C1-inh, C3bP and C5b-9 by ELISA in plasma samples from normals, rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosis (SLE) patients showed significantly elevated levels in the two patient groups (P〈0.0001 for C1s:C1-inh, C3bP and C5b-9) compared to normals. In seropositive RA patients there were significant correlations between the levels of the three complement activation complexes and IgM-RF, IgG-RF and IgA-RF. However, IgM-RF did not interfere with any of the ELISA systems. Mean levels of C1s:C1-inh, C3bP and C5b-9 were the same in paired plasma and synovial fluids; however, C3bP levels in the paired samples did not correlate with one another by rank. Our conclusions are that: (a) elevated plasma levels of these complement activation products are detectable in rheumatic diseases; (b) plasma levels of these complement activation products are related to Rheumatoid factor (RF) levels in seropositive RA patients; and (c) IgM-RF does not influence these solid-phase ELISA procedures.
