Description / Table of Contents: Abstract
Notes: Abstract Doping of titania catalysts by heterocations produces a modification of their surface characteristics (point defects) which are responsible for the catalytic activity in the oxidation of CO. The electronic factor does not seem to be involved.

Notes: Abstract The current approach to screening for hepatitis C and non-A, non-B, non-C hepatitis in French blood transfusion centers involves a combination of a transaminase assay and tests for antibodies to hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc) and antibodies to hepatitis C virus (anti-HCV). A decision-analysis model was used to assess the cost-effectiveness ratio of this approach compared to the former approach, which included only transaminase and anti-HBc screening. Cost data were collected by a questionnaire sent to 26 centers throughout France. The average costs of diagnostic kits, equipment, staff, and administration were calculated. Estimates of prevalence and sensitivity values came from the medical literature. The cost-effectiveness ratio was expressed in French francs per infected donor detected. A sensitivity analysis of the variables in the model was performed to estimate the validity of the cost-effectiveness ratio. For 100,000 donations the incremental cost of the current approach reached FrF 2,566,111 (about US $ 500,000), with a marginal effectiveness of 180 donations detected. The sensitivity analysis showed the effect of prevalence on the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio. Transfusion centers may change their screening approach in areas of high or low prevalence of hepatitis C in France.

Notes: Abstract Simultaneous measurements of variations in magnetic and dilatometric properties were successfully used to detect the phase transition occurring during the thermal treatment of iron(III) oxide microcrystals. The increase of the compacting pressure, i.e. the increase of the interparticular number, favours the irreversibleγ→α transition. An unusual phase of iron(III) oxide, different from theγ-phase, has been unambiguously demonstrated. Its stability seems to be improved by the surface energy excess due to the highly-divided state.

Notes: Abstract Finely divided and well-crystallized niobium oxide has been prepared by flame reaction and identified as L Nb2O5. The solid particles are non-porous, with a specific surface area in the range 30 to 50 m2 g−1. They are stable under oxygen or vacuum up to 673 K. A heat treatment under hydrogen, at temperature higher than 573 K, is sufficient to create some modifications in the absorption spectrum attributed to electrons solvated by the solid.

Notes: Abstract The size of gamma-ferric microcrystals prepared by vapour phase reaction in an oxygen hydrogen flame may be varied between 17 and 77 nm. Saturation magnetization at 77 K decreases when the surface/volume ratio of particles increases but, for the smallest particles (〈40 nm) exhibiting only {100} and {111} planes, the size effect is much greater than for larger particles also exhibiting {110} faces.
