Notes: Abstract Arsenic metabolism was studied for two marine microorganisms, a facultative anaerobic bacterium, Serratia marinorubra, and an obligately aerobic yeast, Rhodotorula rubra. Both were cultivated in media with (74As) arsenate (As V), and the products of arsenate metabolism were determined qualitatively. Both the bacterium and the yeast produced arsenite (AS III) and methylarsonic acid [CH3AsO(OH)2]. In addition to the foregoing, only the yeast produced dimethylarsinic acid (CH3)2AsO(OH) and volatile alkylarsines. In contrast, the bacterium growing anaerobically with cobalamine as a cofactor did not synthesize gaseous forms of arsenic such as methylarsines. Neither organism synthesized arsoniumphospholipids such as those produced by marine phytoplankton or terrestrial fungi. The yeast did not accumulate arsenite, but instead transported some of it into the culture medium and methylated the remainder first to methylarsonic acid and then to dimethylarsinic acid. Finally, the latter compound was methylated further and volatile alkylarsines were formed. In contrast, the bacterium retained all products of arsenate metabolism intracellularly. Both the bacterium and the yeast, therefore, converted relatively toxic arsenate, the most abundant arsenic compound in seawater, to products that were presumably less toxic.

Notes: Summary The authors report 12 cases of myocardial bridges over the anterior interventricular artery discovered surgically. In 5 the compressive myocardial bridges were limited; in 7 the intramyocardial course of the anterior ventricular artery was discovered at operation. Comparison of the operative appearances with the angiographic findings affords a basis for anatomico-radiologic correlation. The authors stress the difference in frequency and significance between the compressive myocardial bridge (an indication for surgery) and the intramyocardial anterior interventricular artery discovered by chance during a procedure for coronary revascularization indicated for stenosing atherosclerotic lesions.

Notes: : The objective of this study was to determine the effects of acetylation or succinylation on the physicochemical properties of casein micelles in milk. Analysis of untreated and modified milk samples revealed solubilization of caseins and calcium phosphate from the micelle under mild acylation treatments. Solvation of micelle was affected, whereas no influence in size dia and potential zeta arose from the acylation treatments. Physicochemical characteristics of acetylated milk sample were intermediate between untreated and succinylated ones. Changes were also observed after calcium addition to reconstituted milk. Calcium supplementation counteracted the effect of chemical modification of caseins by reducing the susceptibility of casein micelle to disassembly.

Notes: : The relationship between the content of N-acetylneuraminic acid residues of micellar K-casein and acid coagulability of milk was investigated. At 30 °C, partial deglycosylation of micellar K-casein does not significantly affect the content of micellar proteins, micellar surface charge, and micellar solvation. Casein micelles modified by the release of part of the N-acetylneuraminic acid residues showed a shorter acid gelation time, a higher rate of gel strengthening, and a higher final firmness. This enhancement in the gelation ability of the neuraminidase-treated casein micelles of milk should appear as the result of increase in number of hydrophobic sites on the surface of casein micelle due to enzymatic deglycosylation of micellar K-casein.

Notes: Abstract. The aim of this study was to describe cross-sectional imaging features of recurrent papilloma of the nasal fossa and paranasal sinuses and to evaluate the role of MR and CT in the postoperative follow-up of this lesion. Magnetic resonance imaging and CT of ten patients who presented recurrence of inverted papilloma were reviewed and correlated to initial imaging, endoscopy, and surgical reports. Imaging patterns of recurrent inverted papilloma are identical to those of initial tumors and recurrence location is closely related to the site of the former lesion. Magnetic resonance is more efficient than CT for the diagnosis and evaluation of extensions. Magnetic resonance supplies the deficiencies of endoscopy in case of extensions to the frontal sinus or the lateral recess of the antrum, especially if mucosal hyperplasia or sinusitis is associated. Magnetic resonance imaging is the first imaging modality to perform in the follow-up after removal of inverted papilloma.
