Notes: Summary The aim of this work is to examine the critical loci which govern the limits to the depths to which a Rayleigh wave can penetrate into a Half-space. Both interior and surface sources are considered. The corresponding critical regions for the existence of these waves play a vital role in more complicated problems such as the calculation of the reflection and transmission coefficients of Rayleigh waves in a wedge.

Notes: Summary Elastic waves radiated by a finite circular disc source are compared for two models by treating it as the limit of an explosion inside a cavity in the form of a circular cylinder of small height or an oblate spheroid of small minor axis.

Notes: Abstract A 54.95-MHz coherent backscatter radar, an ionosonde and the magnetometer located at Trivandrum in India (8.5○N, 77○E, 0.5○N dip angle) recorded large-amplitude ionospheric fluctuations and magnetic field fluctuations associated with a Pc5 micropulsation event, which occurred during an intense magnetic storm on 24 March 1991 (Ap=161). Simultaneous 100-nT-level fluctuations are also observed in the H-component at Brorfelde, Denmark (55.6○N gm) and at Narsarsuaq, Greenland (70.6○N gm). Our study of the above observations shows that the E-W electric field fluctuations in the E- and F-regions and the magnetic field fluctuations at Thumba are dominated by a near-sinusoidal oscillation of 10 min during 1730–1900 IST (1200-1330 UT), the amplitude of the electric field oscillation in the equatorial electrojet (EEJ) is 0.1-0.25 mV m−1 and it increases with height, while it is about 1.0 mV m−1 in the F-region, the ground-level H-component oscillation can be accounted for by the ionospheric current oscillation generated by the observed electric field oscillation in the EEJ and the H-component oscillations at Trivandrum and Brorfelde are in phase with each other. The observations are interpreted in terms of a compressional cavity mode resonance in the inner magnetosphere and the associated ionospheric electric field penetrating from high latitudes to the magnetic equator.

Notes: Gas phase p-difluorobenzene (PDFB) has been laser ionized from several vibronic levels of its 1B2u first excited electronic state. The vibrational state distribution of the ions generated depends on the vibronic level from which ionization occurs. The fundamental frequencies of five symmetric vibrations; ν2, ν3, ν4, ν5, and ν6, and three asymmetric vibrations; ν8, ν29, and ν30, of the lowest electronic state of PDFB+ have been assigned. Effects due to electronic configuration interaction are observed in the photoelectron spectra. Small peaks are also observed in the spectra which may reflect a change in geometry of the ground state cation.

Notes: An effusive molecular beam of aniline vapor has been two-step ionized by irradiating it with the output from a frequency doubled dye laser. Photoelectrons ejected while exciting several different vibronic levels of its 1B2 electronic state have been kinetic energy analyzed. In all cases ions are found to be generated in their ground electronic state. Their vibrational state distribution is strongly wavelength dependent and differs remarkably from that obtained in conventional single photon photoelectron spectroscopy. The energies of several in-plane vibrational modes of aniline cations have been measured. In contrast with the ground electronic state of the neutral molecule, the ground state of the ion and 1B2 excited electronic state of the neutral molecule both appear to be nearly planar.

Notes: NH4IO3 shows an abrupt contraction in the direction of spontaneous polarization at 82°C. This anomaly is accompanied by changes in the optical properties and phonon spectra, which were also studied at different pressures. On the basis of the lattice parameters and Raman spectra a probable mechanism is suggested for the phase transition.

Notes: This paper deals with the scattering of neutrons by crystals which contain at least one anomalous scatterer. It is shown that anomalous scattering studies provide a powerful method of evaluating the amplitudes of lattice waves for crystals like CdS with at least one anomalous scatterer in the unit cell.

Notes: The crystal structure of (W12.64Mo1.36)O41, containing {102} crystallographic shear (CS) planes, has been solved, a = 23.939 (9), b = 3.966 (1), c = 16.729 (15) Å, β = 106.74 (5)°; P2/c; R = 0.10 for 1285 reflections. It was shown that the Mo atoms segregate on positions in the CS planes. The O atom octahedra are distorted in typical arrangements, so that the elastic strain energy could be estimated. The hypothetical phases (W,Mo)nO3n - 1 for a wide range of values of n were derived from the experimental atomic parameters. Optical and electrical experiments show the existence of two types of charge carriers, a minority in the interplanar material, which contribute to conductivity, and a majority of trapped positions in the CS planes, preferentially on Mo positions.

Notes: A study of the phase transitions in WO3 crystals by Raman and absorption spectroscopy reveals that WO3 possesses two stable (or metastable) modifications at room temperature, differing slightly but definitely in their physical properties. Measurements of electrical conductivity show that both are insulators at low temperatures and semiconductors at higher temperatures. One is monoclinic and the other triclinic. Both exhibit at lower temperatures discontinuities in their physical properties without accompanying changes in cell parameters.
