    Notes: Abstract Critical Rayleigh numbers have been measured in a liquid metal cylinder of finite height in the presence of a rotating magnetic field. Several different stability regimes were observed, which were determined by the values of the Rayleigh and Hartmann numbers. For weak rotating magnetic fields and small Rayleigh numbers, the experimental observations can be explained by the existence of a single non-axisymmetric meridional roll rotating around the cylinder, driven by the azimuthal component of the magnetic field. The measured dependence of rotational velocity on magnetic field strength is consistent with the existence of laminar flow in this regime.

    Notes: Summary Amlodipine was administered as 14 single 5-mg oral daily doses to 27 male subjects with renal function ranging from normal to haemodialysis-dependent. Blood specimens were obtained for measurement of plasma amlodipine concentrations for 24 h following the first dose, for 168 h following the final dose and during daily administration of amlodipine. Amlodipine was well tolerated. Renal impairment had little effect on the pharmacokinetics of amlodipine. The elimination half-life was of the order of 50 h, similar to previously reported values and did not vary with renal function. Steady-state pre-dose concentrations were observed after the ninth dose. Accumulation of amlodipine was not significantly different from that expected on theoretical grounds and did not significantly change with renal function. These results suggest that once daily administration of amlodipine is suitable for all degrees of renal function and that dosage adjustment is not necessary in renal impairment.

    Notes: The effect of tellurium precipitates was studied in medium resistivity (103–106 Ω cm) undoped and Cl-doped CdTe using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and mid-infrared spectroscopy and the results were correlated with near-infrared microscopy photographs. When present in a significant quantity (∼0.25 wt %), we show that Te precipitates are detectable using DSC measurements. In the mid-infrared, the contribution of the absorption by free-carriers is negligible, and therefore, the effect of the Te precipitates in these crystals can be considered uncoupled from the effects of Cd vacancies.

    Notes: The uptake of Cl by excised roots of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) from KC1 solution maintained at high pH was markedly reduced by high rates of aeration, whereas K uptake was scarcely affected. Aeration rate had relatively minor effects at low pH. The effect of high aeration rate at pH 9 could be overcome by the use of buffered solutions. In unbuffered solutions the H resulting from the excess cation uptake together with that produced from respiratory CO2 was sufficient to materially reduce the pH of the solution. The reduction in pH favored the uptake of Cl which is adversely affected by high pH. The effect of aeration rate could be explained in terms of root induced pH changes and film diffusion involving the solution film adjacent to the root surface.

    Notes: Summary Alterations in the vasopressor system found in cardiac failure are part of compensatory measures that may modify pharmacologic-therapeutic response. Therefore, in 64 patients with dilated cardiomyopathy, we investigated its enhanced activity in different clinical stages of the disease as compared to normal controls. Patients in NYHA class II (n=20) demonstrated increased activity of the sympathico-adrenal, reninangiotensin-aldosterone, vasopressin, and atrial natriueretic factor systems, while maximum values were found in patients of NYHA class IV (n=24). In these patients, noradrenaline was enhanced by a factor of 7, adrenaline by a factor of 2, plasma-renin-activity by a factor of 7, angiotensin II by a factor of 2.5, aldosterone by a factor of 5, vasopressin by a factor of 1.5, and ANF by a factor of 4 as compared to normal controls Clinical NYHA classes correlated to a certain degree with the various plasma hormones. Patients treated with an aldosterone inhibitor in addition to digitalis and diuretics revealed significantly higher values for aldosterone, vasopressin, and angiotensin II as compared to those who received digitalis and diuretics alone. The addition of ACE-inhibitor therapy resulted in a decrease of angiotensin II, aldosterone, and vasopressin. Plasma catecholamines and ANF, however, did not change under the influence of cardiac medication. Diuretic treatment in NYHA class II patients reduced plasma volumes (p〈0.01). Plasma volume in NYHA class IV patients only was found to be higher than in normal controls. Thus, analysis of the neurohumoral system can aid both in the identification of the clinical degree of dilated cardiomyopathy and in its optimal therapy.

    Notes: Summary Compared to the behavior of excised barley roots, K uptake by excised roots of vetch was far more responsive to pH and required ambient Ca concentrations 100 fold higher to overcome the deleterious effect of low pH. At pH values above 7, however, the addition of very low concentrations of Ca markedly depressed the uptake of K by vetch roots, less so for barley. Potassium uptakes by vetch roots in the presence of Ca led to K being sequestered into a non-exchangeable form and this process was dependent upon aerobic metabolism. The degree of specificity for Ca appeared to be much higher for vetch roots than for barley roots. Some of the differences in response to Ca between vetch and barley may be related to the higher exchange capacity of vetch roots.

    Notes: Summary Generally, Ca uptakes were higher and K uptakes lower for excised vetch roots as opposed to those of barley under similar conditions. This behavior was considered to be related to root ion exchange properties and Dorman theory, since the ion exchange capacity of vetch roots is considerably higher than that of barley. Metabolic inhibitors were very effective against K uptakes in contrast to Ca uptakes by both vetch and barley indicating that Ca uptake was primarily non-metabolic under these experimental conditions. The rapidity with which most of the Ca previously taken up was removed by a Ba solution suggests that, for short time periods, a quasi-reversible ion exchange relationship existed between Ba and Ca. Fundamental differences between Ca and K washout curves are attributed to this primarily non-metabolic process. It was concluded that uptake of Ca by excised vetch and barley roots is basically of a surface nature.
