Notes: Proposes that successful implementation of a relationship marketing program requires a complement of strategies that satisfies and motivates customers through different phases of relationship development. To accomplish this, firms simultaneously implement transactional marketing strategies and relational marketing strategies. Offers a case study of a non-profit professional theater to demonstrate how a firm can implement multiple marketing strategies to achieve different relational objectives, and extends these findings to offer recommendations and managerial implications.

Notes: Purpose - This paper seeks to integrate stakeholder theory with the entrepreneurial orientation literature to explore relationships between distinct entrepreneurial behaviors and support from stakeholders with divergent interests. Design/methodology/approach - A longitudinal study in the non-profit professional theatre industry examines how relationships between entrepreneurial orientation and stakeholder support evolve over time. A series of regression analyses examine how support from diverse stakeholders influences entrepreneurial behaviors and, subsequently, how those entrepreneurial behaviors influence future stakeholder support. Findings - The findings support a multi-dimensional conceptualization of entrepreneurial orientation, point to tensions inherent in satisfying multiple stakeholder demands, and illustrate that different stakeholders support entrepreneurial behaviors in unique and sometimes unexpected ways. The findings offer insight into the complex balancing act that entrepreneurial managers must execute to generate support from distinct stakeholder markets. Originality/value - This research provides researchers and managers with unique insights into the evolutionary nature of the relationships between distinct entrepreneurial behaviors and external stakeholder support.

Notes: Abstract The present study was designed to test the hypothesis that in hypertrophied myocardium of patients with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM) a reduced contractile reserve provided by frequency dependent potentiation of force of contraction contributes to the myocardial dysfunction. Myectomy was performed in 8 HOCM patients with normal systolic left ventricular function at rest. Nonfailing myocardium from the hearts of three multiorgan donors was investigated for comparison. In thin myocardial strips we measured the inotropic effects of different stimulation frequencies (0,5–3.0Hz) at different extracellular Ca2+ concentrations (1.8–16.2 mmol/l). At 1.8 mmol/l extracellular Ca2+ concentration, increasing stimulation rates had no positive inotropic effect in HOCM myocardium, whereas in nonfailing myocardium force of contraction increased up to 3 Hz. Increasing extracellular Ca2+ concentrations induced a positive force-frequency relation in HOCM with a maximum at 5.4 mmol/l Ca2+. A further increase to 16.2 mmol/l Ca2+ resulted in a negative force-frequency relation in these specimens. The time to peak tension and the time to relaxation decreased at increasing stimulation frequencies at all Ca2+ concentrations investigated. In conclusion, in hypertrophied myocardium of HOCM patients increasing stimulation frequencies failed to have a positive inotropic effect at physiological extracellular Ca2+ concentrations. The induction of a positive force-frequency relation by higher Ca2+ concentrations suggests that an abnormal cellular Ca2+ handling may play an important pathophysiological role.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The main intention of this contribution is to discuss different nonlinear approaches to heart rate and blood pressure variability analysis for a better understanding of the cardiovascular regulation. We investigate measures of complexity which are based on symbolic dynamics, renormalised entropy and the finite time growth rates. The dual sequence method to estimate the baroreflex sensitivity and the maximal correlation method to estimate the nonlinear coupling between time series are employed for analysing bivariate data. The latter appears to be a suitable method to estimate the strength of the nonlinear coupling and the coupling direction. Heart rate and blood pressure data from clinical pilot studies and from very large clinical studies are analysed. We demonstrate that parameters from nonlinear dynamics are useful for risk stratification after myocardial infarction, for the prediction of life-threatening cardiac events even in short time series, and for modelling the relationship between heart rate and blood pressure regulation. These findings could be of importance for clinical diagnostics, in algorithms for risk stratification, and for therapeutic and preventive tools of next generation implantable cardioverter defibrillators.

Notes: Bovine aortic endothelial cells (BAEC) can be isolated in large numbers without major contamination by other cells and maintained in culture with a limited life span for about 100 population doublings. In order to study phenotypic changes of BAEC during long-term culture, stocks of different passages of BAEC were established and their morphological, migratory, and proliferative properties analyzed. Early-passage BAEC (passages 5-15) rapidly produce dense, cobblestone-like monolayers. Their growth beyond the monolayer configuration is characterized by the formation of an irregular network of spindle-shaped, crisscrossing BAEC growing either on top or beneath the monolayer, and by the assembly of elongated BAEC into well-differentiated capillary-like tubes. In contrast, senescent BAEC (passages 35-45) form perfect cobblestone monolayers that contain several, often multinucleated giant cells and a few capillary-like tubes but not the crisscrossing networks of their early-passage counterparts. The rates of BAEC migration and proliferation gradually decline during in vitro senescence. This decline is neutralized by exogenous basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) which elevates the migratory and proliferative capacities of early-passage and senescent BAEC to uniformly high levels. Northern blot analysis shows a gradual decline in bFGF message and an increase in laminin message during in vitro BAEC senescence. The present study supports the concept of autocrine growth regulation of BAEC and associates a decreased bFGF message with decreased rates of migration and proliferation as well as loss of the crisscrossing BAEC morphotype in senescent cultures. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
