Summary By evaluating recent critical investigations on precipitationN, evaporationV, and surface salinityS new mean values for five-degree zones of the oceans are calculated representing an improvement of hitherto known data and leading to new mean values of the salinity and water-balance of the oceans. Starting from this numerical basis the mathematical relations between the three independent variablesV, N, S can be formulated in a new way and extended to all five-degree zones of the oceans (with the exception of the Polar oceans); former results of the Author are thereby enlarged and modified. The new equations for the mean annual evaporation heightsV′ in the northern zones (70°N to 10°N) andV″ in the southern ones (60° S to 10° N) of the ocean are:V′=66.7(S−34.47)+N±7 cm, andV″=80.0 (S−34.92)+N±8 cm. Both relations are so strict as to allow the calculation of the zonal valuesV from the factorsS andN with an average error of ±7 to 8 per cent only, thereby not only indicating the reliability of the new values of the oceanic water-balance, but also rendering obvious the fundamental planetary laws of interaction between ocean and atmosphere in the sense ofA. Defant. Moreover, the stronger continental influences of the northern half of the oceans are shown as modifying factors. Necessity of improved and enlarged meteorological observations on sea comprising all elements of heat and waterbalance is once more emphasized.
