Notes: PbZr0.5Ti0.5O3/La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 (PZT/LSCO) heterostructures have been grown directly on (100)Si by chemical solution routes. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction analysis show that PZT and LSCO thin films are polycrystalline and entirely perovskite phase. PZT thin films grown on LSCO thin films showed no preferential orientation and excellent ferroelectricity. The remnant polarization Pr is about 22.8 μC/cm2 and the coercive field Ec is about 95 kV/cm at an applied electric field of 400 kV/cm. The ferroelectric capacitor has been fabricated and showed no polarization fatigue after 3×109 fatigue cycles. The Pt/PZT/LSCO capacitor is suitable for nonvolatile random access memory application. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Highly (100) oriented Ba0.9Sr0.1TiO3/LaNiO3 heterostructures have been grown on Si(100) using chemical solution routes. X-ray diffraction analysis shows that Ba0.9Sr0.1TiO3 thin films are high (100) orientation (α100=0.92). Atomic force microscopy investigation shows that they have large grains about 80–200 nm. A Pt/Ba0.9Sr0.1TiO3/LaNiO3 capacitor has been fabricated and showed excellent ferroelectricity, the remnant polarization and coercive field are 10.8 μC/cm2 and 96 kV/cm, respectively. The electric field dependence of capacitance measurement shows that the capacitor has large capacitance tuning ([Cmax−Cmin]/Cmax×100%) of 63%. The Ba0.9Sr0.1TiO3 thin films have high dielectric constant (cursive-epsilon) of 200 at 1 MHz. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract— The fatigue crack growth behaviour in aluminium alloy sheets of 2024-T3 and 7475-T761, subjected to standardized spectra (TWIST and FALSTAFF), was investigated using centre-cracked specimens. A strip crack closure model was used to interpret experimental data, and to make predictions for the crack growth. The strip model is based on the Dugdale concept, but modified to keep plastically-stretched materials on the crack surface so that the crack opening load can be determined, and the fatigue crack growth can be analysed according to Elber's crack growth assumption. Differing from other models of the same kind, a variable constraint factor was introduced to account for the gradual transition of stress state at the crack tip resulting from the crack growth. It has been shown that the transition of stress state at the crack tip causes the unusual behaviour of the fatigue crack growth in sheets. Both experiments and predictions show that a crack may grow faster at a low load than at a higher one in a certain applied load range due to the crack tip stress state transition. The crack tip stress state also contributes to the thickness effect observed for the crack growth in sheets. In agreement with experimental results, it has been shown that a plane stress state will prevail at the crack tip in a thin sheet compared to that in a thick sheet. The plane stress state results in a higher crack opening level which leads to a longer fatigue life for thin sheets.

Notes: A statistical model has been developed to evaluate fatigue damage at multi-sites in complex joints based on coupon test data and fracture mechanics methods. The model is similar to the USAF model, but modified by introducing a failure criterion and a probability of fatal crack occurrence to account for the multiple site damage phenomenon. The involvement of NDI techniques has been included in the model which can be used to evaluate the structural reliability, the detectability of fatigue damage (cracks), and the risk of failure based on NDI results taken from samples. A practical example is provided for rivet fasteners and bolted fasteners. It is shown that the model can he used even if it is based on conventional S-N coupon experiments should further fractographic inspections be made for cracks on the broken surfaces of specimens.

Notes: Abstract A numerical procedure was developed for the approximate weigth function (AWF) evaluation of reliable stress intensity factor (SIF) for part-through Mode I cracks for general load. Different from other WF procedures which require closed form reference SIFs, this procedure requires only limited number of discrete SIF solutions directly obtained from other numerical methods as reference SIFs to compute continuous SIFs as function of both the crack size and the location along the crack front. As an implement to the general numerical methods in the Damage and Safe Life analysis, this procedure substantially increases the value of numerical SIF results. The present procedure is relative simple, with most of basic relations being analytically soved, and therefore efficient in use. Several examples were presented to demonstrate the accuracy of this procedure.

Notes: Abstract Photons emitted in the28 Si+64 Ni and32 S+64 Ni reactions at 143 MeV and 156 MeV incident energy respectively, have been detected in coincidence with the ejected charged fragments. An array of 48 BaF2 γ-rays detector and 6 solid state silicon detector telescopes have been used. Photon energy spectra measured in the energy range from 2 to 20 MeV in coincidence with ejectiles coming from deep inelastic reactions, are consistent with statistical emission from the reaction products.

Notes: Abstract. Amorphous and crystalline Bi3.25La0.75Ti3O12 (BLT) thin films on vitreous silica and sapphire substrates are prepared from chemical solutions. Their optical properties are investigated by transmittance measurements at energies from 1.1 to 5.0 eV. A four-phase model consisting of air, surface rough layer, BLT, and substrate is used to simulate the measured transmittance spectra. The inverse synthesis method with a double Tauc-Lorentz (DTL) dispersion function is used to calculate the optical constants and film thicknesses. The dispersion of the refractive index in the transparent region agrees with Sellmeier’s dispersion relation. The absorption edges of the BLT films are different in the amorphous and crystalline cases.

Notes: Abstract It is shown that the Partially Overlapping Molecular Level Model (POMLM) accounts for the experimental results of the dissipative28Si +48Ti collision around 210 MeV incident energy. The general trend of the properties of the fluctuations as well as the average angular distributions are reproduced by the same set of main parameters. A general consistency is also found between the present data and the data obtained in previous work on the same colliding system performed at lower incident energy (around 123 MeV).

Notes: Abstract In this paper, a high power millimeter wave waveguide Y-junction circulator, which is compound in structure, has been analyzed and developed. Its enduring power attains 60 W CW-power and the temperature of the waveguide surface does not exceed 25 degree centigrade under natural coolness.
