Notes: The use of circular object targets is very common in spatial photogrammetric object reconstruction. An object circle is projected on to the image plane as an ellipse if the object plane and the image plane are not parallel to each other. The image co-ordinates of the centre of the ellipse are usually determined automatically by means of digital image processing. These co-ordinates are then used as observations for a subsequent reconstruction of the three dimensional object point. The image co-ordinates of the centre of the ellipse and the true co-ordinates of the projected centre of the circular object target are not identical; thus eccentricity is caused, resulting in systematic geometric image measurement errors. This paper describes the functional context of this eccentricity for a typical target/camera set-up. The possible solutions for a correction of this systematic eccentricity error are derived. Guidelines for the correct combination of object target sizes and exposure distances, guaranteeing reliable image point measurements and accurate object point determination, are proposed.

Notes: Abstract It has been experimentally researched that convective heat transfer and pressure loss characteristics in rectangular channels with staggered arrays of drop-shaped pin fins in crossflow of air. The effects of arrangements of pin fins on heat transfer and resistance are discussed and the row-by-row variations of the mean Nusselt numbers are presented. By means of the heat/mass transfer analogy and the naphthalene sublimation technique, the heat transfer coefficients on pin fins and on endwall (base plate) of the channel have been achieved respectively. The total mean heat transfer coefficients of pin fin channels are calculated and the resistance coefficients are also investigated. The experimental results show that heat transfer of a channel with drop-shaped pin fins is higher than that with circular pin fins while the resistance of the former is much lower than that of the latter in the Reynolds number range from 900 to 9000.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A focal point in the application of layout-planning methods lies in the planning of management and production in industrial companies. An enormous number of EDP-supported layout-planning systems have been developed for this purpose, the efficiency of which differs greatly from system to system. The purpose of this survey is to describe the present level of EDP-supported layout-planning. To that end, a general definition of the problem is given, and a record of the requirements for layout-planning in administration and production is being developed. The discussion of the present level of efficiency results from these requirement criteria. This survey closes with some points of emphasis that should be considered in future development projects.

Notes: Modelling of Mass Exchange of Volatile Organic Compounds in High-Viscosity Media. Polymers may contain low-molecular weight organic components as a result of incomplete reaction during polymerisation, contamination of the reactants, and undesired side reactions. Aqueous of polymers are usually applied to surfaces (emulsion paints, adhesives, paper finishing agents, etc.). Since low molecular components then escape into the air, they are removed after polymerisation by stripping the product with an inert gas. While the engineering used for this step is well developed, the mass transfer processes involved have received little yet controversial attention. This paper presents a mechanistic mathematical model which includes the mass transfer steps occurring during stripping in a stationary continuously operating apparatus with complete back-mixing. Measurements of the position of phase equilibria and determination of the depletion achievable in an aerosol jet loop reactor demonstrate that, provided that the temperature of treatment exceeds the glass transition temperature, the stripping process is determined solely by the partition coefficients of the exchanged components between the phases, the hydrodynamic parameters, and the reactor operating conditions. This contradicts the claims of some authors that diffusion processes in the latex particles are of decisive importance.

Notes: Measurements of liquid macromixing characteristics are reported for a half industrial scaled jet loop reactor operating with air-water mixtures. Based on a model of loop reactors with sections of different mixing behavior the single circulation dispersion coefficient can be split into its components caused by the riser and the downcomer. The dispersion coefficient of the riser is about 100 times greater than that of the downcomer. The addition of gas involves greater dispersions coefficients. The comparison of the mixing times of the JLR with those of stirred vessels leads to the conclusion that the JLR is equivalent or even superior to stirred vessels.
