Notes: In order to investigate the atomic structure of sputtered-deposited Fe76Tb24 amorphous film,we performed X-ray anomalous scattering (XAS) measurements at two energies near the TbK-absorption edge using the synchrotron-radiations (SR). The total, Tb and Fe environmental pairdistribution functions (PDF's) of the amorphous film were obtained from the normalized scatteringintensities after the corrections for the structural analysis. The coordination numbers were calculatedfrom the area under the fitted PDF profiles multiplied by 4πr 2 and near-neighbor distances wereestimated from the positions of the peaks of the fitted profiles

Notes: Extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) belongs to the family of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs), which are serine-threonine kinases activated by phosphorylation in response to a variety of mitogenic signals. We previously reported that 17β-estradiol rapidly activates ERK in the rat hippocampus. However, the physiological role of this rapid activation of ERK by estrogen in vivo has not yet been elucidated. This study investigated whether ERK may participate in mediating the neuroprotective effects of estrogen against quinolinic acid (QA) toxicity in the rat hippocampus in vivo. Injection of QA into the hippocampi of male rats produced a loss of Nissl-stained neurons in the CA1 after 24 h. Prior administration of 17β-estradiol (50 pmol/animal) to the ventricles prevented the QA-induced decrease in Nissl-stained neurons. Pretreatment with U0126, an inhibitor of MAPK/ERK kinase, inhibited the rapid activation of ERK by 17β-estradiol in the rat hippocampus. Moreover, the neuroprotective effects of 17β-estradiol against QA toxicity were blocked by the pretreatment with U0126. U0126 alone did not produce a loss of neurons. These results indicate that ERK mediates estrogen neuroprotection after QA toxicity in the rat hippocampus.

Notes: The β-adrenoreceptors of human lymphocytes were investigated by binding assays using a radiolabeled β-adrenoreceptor agonist, 3H-hydroxybenzylisoproterenol, in an intact cell system. Intact human lymphocytes had binding sites for the ligand, which seemed to represent physiological β-adrenoreceptors. Thus, assay of binding of the β-adrenergic agonist, 3H-HBI, by intact lymphocytes can be used to study β-adrenoreceptors in human tissue and to elucidate possible β-adrenoreceptor disorders in human diseases.

Notes: Abstract Excision has been widely recognized as the treatment of choice for choledochal cysts. For biliary reconstruction after cyst excision, we have strongly recommended hepaticoenterostomy at the hepatic hilum with a wide anastomotic stoma to prevent postoperative cholangitis. However, we recently treated two infants in whom a wide anastomotic stoma could not be made due to a narrow hilar duct. Therefore, a hepatic portojejunostomy with Roux-en-Y anastomosis (Kasai's procedure) was performed after cyst excision in both case to permit free drainage of bile. The mucosa of the hilar duct was everted and fixed to the liver parenchyma to prevent stricture formation. Both babies have done well since the surgery.

Notes: Abstract Existing scoring systems for 24-h esophageal pH recording rely heavily on total duration of acid reflux; little is known or understood of the significance of dynamic aspects of esophageal acid clearance. The 24-h pH profile and rate of acid clearance in the lower esophagus was analyzed in children with clinical features of gastro-esophageal reflux (GER). Twenty-four-hour histograms of pH and time were developed with whole-pH data obtained by 24-h pH monitoring, and values for acid clearance were calculated from actual pH curves. The acid clearance value represented the average time in seconds to recover 1 pH unit from the lowest pH to pH 4.0. Clearance values greater than 100 s/pH were considered to be abnormal. Sixty-six recordings were analyzed. Five types of pH profile were characterized: (1) a “normal” pattern in which esophageal pH did not fall below pH 4.0 and the acid clearance value was 67.9 ± 41.1 s/pH (mean ± SD); (2) a “long-tail” pattern with a moderate number of reflux episodes and rapid acid clearance. The mean acid clearance value was 78.1 ± 46.4 s/pH; (3) an “intermediate” pattern with esophageal pH at or near 4.0 for prolonged periods where the mean acid clearance value was significantly delayed (285.6 ± 109.8 s/pH); (4) a “pseudo-GER” pattern with moderate reduction in pH during reflux episodes, but with prolonged acid clearance. The mean acid clearance value was 175.1 ± 93.0 s/pH; and (5) a “GER” pattern; this was associated with either infrequent acid reflux and delayed acid clearance, or frequent reflux episodes and rapid acid clearance. The mean acid clearance value was 160.3 ± 113.6 s/pH. Dynamic analysis of acid clearance in the esophagus may be useful therapeutically.

Notes: Abstract An 11-year-old boy with multiple tumors arising from the peritoneum without an obvious intra-abdominal primary origin is presented. Surgery and autopsy revealed multiple tumors in the peritoneum with liver metastases. Histology showed compact nests of small, epithelial-like cells surrounded by desmoplastic stroma. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were probably capable of differentiating toward epithelial, neuroectodermal, and mesenchymal cells. This tumor usually behaves malignantly, with intra-abdominal seeding and metastases, and responds poorly to chemo- and radiotherapy.

Notes: Abstract A female child with a Wilms' tumor producing neuron-specific enolase (NSE) is presented. The tumor was stage II, with favorable histology, and contained a linear calcification. The NSE was probably composed mostly of α γ enzyme and produced by rhabdomyocyte-like cells in the tumor.

Notes: Abstract A 15-year-old girl underwent an excisional procedure for the treatment of a choledochal cyst with an anomalous pancreatobiliary junction. Her sister, an identical twin, was perfectly healthy without any abnormality in the hepatobiliary system as demonstrated by ultrasound, ERCP, and infusion cholangiography. Choledochal cysts and pancreatobiliary malunions are possibly caused by developmental accidents in early intrauterine life rather than by genetic factors, because of the rarity of familial development and lack of occurrence in both members of a pair of identical twins.

Notes: Abstract The number of children and adolescents with hypersplenism is increasing as the number of long-term survivors undergoing successful Kasai operation for biliary atresia increases. The aim of this study was to determine the standard splenic volume in normal children and adolescents. We measured the splenic volumes with computed tomography (CT) images obtained from 49 Japanese children, adolescents, and young adults, ranging from 9 days to 25 years of age, and from 3.0 kg to 89.0 kg of body weight. The best correlation was observed between splenic volume (SV: cm3) and body weight (BW: kg) with a power curve regression; SV=6.516 BW0.797,r=0.924. The splenic volume and age (AG: years) also correlated well on a power curve; SV=41.879 AG0.411,r=0.897. The ratio of the splenic volume to the body weight (SV/BW: cm3/kg) decreased with age; from 4.5 cm3/kg at 1 month to 2.4 cm3/kg at 25 years of age, according to an exponential curve; SV/BW=4.473e−0.026AG,r=0.593. The above formulas are thus considered to be clinically useful, especially in the assessment of splenic size in children with hypersplenism both before and after partial splenic embolization.
