Notes: Abstract The software development process deals with a wide variety of documents. For the preparation of these documents, as well as for their maintenance, appropriate data management support is requested, resulting in the coexistence of multiple object management systems within a single, advanced software development environment. In order to homogenize data management in software development environments we present the object management machine (OMM) concept as an integration framework for preexisting data management systems. An object management machine enables the creation of uniform access patterns to different data management systems, including the query interface and transaction processing. The concept is being developed in the framework of the EUREKA project ESF (EUREKA Software Factory)1. To make it operational we demonstrate the suitability of the MUSE multidatabase integrator as an implementation framework for the Object Management Machine concept.

Notes: Abstract Strains ofYarrowia lipolytica forming exclusively spherical ascospores were developed through inbreeding. These strains are more suitable for micromanipulation than other inbred strains forming helm-shaped ascospores. External factors affecting sporulation frequency and tetrad formation in this yeast were investigated. Optimal formation of complete tetrads occurred at a narrow range of pH values around 6.0. Citrate was found to stimulate sporulation strongly. A synthetic medium containing citrate was developed to obtain standard conditions for maximum sporulation.

Notes: Abstract The mechanical behavior of a solid polyethylene foam is characterizedby a constitutive equation which is of second order in the linearstrain tensor. It turns out that for the determination of the sixtime dependent material functions relaxation tests intension/compression, torsion and, for instance, in isotropic tension andcompression are necessary. For tension/compression tests theexperimental procedure is described in detail. Main emphasis is givento the methods of optical deformation measurement techniques. Resultsfor the relaxation moduli in tension/compression and for the Poisson‘sratio are presented.

Notes: Abstract A simple microstructure model is used to describe a fluid-filled open-cell foam. In the simplest case it consists of parallel elastic plates with gaps between them, which are filled with a Newtonian fluid. We assume that the load applied to this model material is uniaxial. The constitutive equation is formulated with the pressure of the fluid as an inner variable. The model yields an evolutional equation for the fluid pressure which itself is a field equation, that is a partial differential equation in time and space coordinates. This differential equation is solved for an instantaneously applied constant load and for a harmonically oscillating load. The solution of the differential equation, in combination with the constitutive equation leads to a relation between mean applied load and global strain of the test specimen. Finally, we obtain the creep compliance and the complex modulus of the foam material, respectively. The influence of different geometries of the foam and of different material behaviour of the matrix and fluid on the creep compliance and the complex modulus is discussed.

Notes: Abstract The term integration is used very often now in many different disciplines including software and systems engineering. Unfortunately, a sufficiently precise definition that would clearly express the meaning of the term in a formal way as it would be necessary for it to become an engineering term does not yet exist. In fact, it is very obvious that the term is used with different interpretations and is thus now more a cause for misunderstanding than for engineering precision. It is the intention of this article to develop a more formal definition that can describe the embedding of prefabricated software components into a new systems environment.

Notes: Summary The mating type gene MA TA of the dimorphic yeast Yarrowia lipolytica was cloned. The strategy used was based on the presumed function of this gene in the induction of sporulation. A diploid strain homozygous for the mating type B was transformed with an integrative gene bank from an A wild-type strain. A sporulating transformant was isolated, which contained a plasmid with an 11.6 kb insert. This sequence was rescued from the chromosomal DNA of the transformant and deletion mapping was performed to localize the MAT insert. The MAT gene conferred both sporulating and non-mating phenotypes on a B/B diploid. A LEU2 sequence targeted to this locus segregated like a mating type-linked gene. The A strain did not contain silent copies of the MAT gene.

Notes: Abstract On the basis of a phenomenological theory which is guided by the results on the macroscopic material behavior, a nonlinear constitutive equation is derived to characterize the photoviscoelastic behavior of homogeneous, isotropic, and nonaging amorphous plastics, including large deformations. It is shown how to determine four memory functions by running creep tests in pure tension and simple shear. The testing equipment and the methods of test evaluation are explained. Results are reported for some typical materials. They show how to simplify the basic equation for applications in the analysis of plane states of stress in polymeric structures under quasistatic isothermal loading conditions.

Notes: The gene ICL1 codes for the tetrameric enzyme isocitrate lyase of Y. lipolytica. Twenty icl1- alleles have been analysed for their reversion frequency, their interallelic complementation pattern, and the position of the corresponding mutation site on the fine structure map of the gene ICL1. One intragenic temperature-sensitive revertant of the allele icl1D-39 was isolated, which expressed a thermolabile enzyme. In spite of the fact that no nonsense mutations have been detected, the direction of transcription of the gene ICL1 was inferred from the localization of a linked cis-dominant regulatory mutation site. The size of the mitotic map of this gene suggests that recombination frequency in Y. lipolytica is lower than in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
