    Notes: Abstract The species and distribution of nematodes on the kelp Macrocystic integrifolia Bory, in the Bamfield region of Barkley Sound, British Columbia, Canada were examined. Nine species (belonging to six families) of nematodes were found on the kelp blades. Three species (Monhystera disjuncta, M. refringens and Prochromadorella neapolitana) comprised 91–99% of the nematode fauna and occurred in all monthly samples from July 1978 to November 1979. The three dominant species exhibited seasonal density differences. P. neapolitana occurred mostly in the summer, M. refringens abundance peaked from July to October and M. disjuncta was relatively abundant throughout the year. The other species contributed little to the overall abundance and distribution patterns. All three species occurred in greatest abundance on the lower and middle blades of M. integrifolia in the deep end of the kelp bed. Very few individuals occurred on the upper blades. Nematode distribution on M. integrifolia appeared to be related to blade age and the associated food sources on the blade.

    Notes: Abstract Tourmaline alteration and high boron contents are typical features of the magmatic-hydrothermal systems of the Bolivian tin province. The average boron content in melt inclusions of quartz phenocrysts from tin porphyry systems is 225 ppm (1σ-variation range: 110–420 ppm; n=12) and suggests a magmatic boron input to the hydrothermal tin systems, and not shallow post-magmatic leaching of boron from pelitic country rocks. Boron data from melt inclusions correlate positively with cesium, rubidium and arsenic, and negatively with lithium, titanium and zirconium, and define magmatic fractionation trends. The generally high B, As, Cs and Li contents in melt inclusions suggest involvement of pelitic source lithologies undepleted in these fluid-mobile components, i.e. first-cycle metamorphic rocks. Magmatic fractionation modified the trace-element contents within a one-log-unit range. Bulk-rock Nd isotope data (ɛNd−5 to −10) are in agreement with the dominantly intracrustal geochemical signature of the Bolivian tin porphyry systems, but also imply a variable but minor mantle input. The metallogeny of the tin belt is likely a consequence of intracrustal melting of Lower Paleozoic pelitic and slightly carbonaceous source material, combined with an extended magmatic evolution. The long-lived thermal preparation of the root zones of the silicic systems is provided by mafic magma which also leaves a chemical imprint in the form of the hybrid dacitic bulk composition of the tin porphyry systems.

    Notes: Abstract To investigate processes of magmatic tin enrichment and cassiterite deposition, we studied the abundances of major, trace, and volatile elements in a large number of rehomogenized silicate melt inclusions in quartz and topaz from a pegmatite body at the Ehrenfriedersdorf Sn–W deposit. This deposit is associated with evolved Variscan granites of the central Erzgebirge, southeast Germany. The melt inclusions are peraluminous; the molar aluminum saturation index (ASI) ranges from 1.15 to 2.0, and many inclusions are characterized by a very high content of fluxing components and volatiles. Some inclusions contain more than 20 wt% of H2O, F, Cl, and P2O5, plus Li as well as very high levels of Sn. Some rare, highly evolved fractions of late-stage pegmatite-forming liquid at Ehrenfriedersdorf contained up to 7000 ppm Sn. The presence of hydrogen and methane in addition to water and carbon dioxide in the vapor phase of the melt inclusions suggests a very low oxygen fugacity for some fractions of magma. The extreme levels of tin, volatiles, and fluxing components in this magma had an important influence on processes of melt movement and cassiterite precipitation. Melts, like these, that are high in volatiles and alkalis (sum of Li2O, Na2O, K2O, Rb2O, and Cs2O is 〉8 wt%) have low densities (≤1.8 g/cm3), low viscosities (〈10 Pa.s at 700 °C), facilitate relatively rapid diffusion of ions through melts, and hence are excellent solvents for extracting and transporting ore-forming elements.

    Notes: Summary Five patients with mild hypertension were given single oral doses of Ro 31-1118 (10, 20, 40, and 80 mg) and placebo in a randomized, double-blind, within-patient study. Plasma concentrations of Ro 31-1118 and supine, standing, exercise, and post-exercise heart rates and blood pressures were measured before and at regular intervals after drug administration. The pharmacokinetic data were consistent with a one-compartment model with first-order absorption and a variable time lag. Peak plasma concentrations and area under curve were linearly related to dose, whereas time to peak concentration, half-time, clearance and apparent volume of distribution were dose-independent. There was a reduction in exercise and post-exercise heart rate of approximately 10% after 10 mg and 20 mg Ro 31-1118, and of approximately 15% after 40 mg and 80 mg. At all doses standing systolic blood pressure was reduced by approximately 5%. A similar fall was seen in exercise and post-exercise systolic blood pressures. There was no substantial effect of Ro 31-1118 on supine or standing heart rates nor on diastolic blood pressure. No adverse effects were reported. It is concluded that Ro 31-1118 has linear pharmacokinetics over the dose range 10–80 mg, and has a weak antihypertensive effect when administered in single doses to patients with mild hypertension.

    Notes: Abstract It has been proposed that the supression of endogenous levels of angiotensin II by angiotensin converting enzyme inhibition, may result in up-regulation of vascular AT1 receptors. This study evaluated the effects of orally administered enalapril on angiotensin II induced vasoconstriction in the human forearm of patients with mild-moderate hypertension. Patients received in random order, enalapril (20 mg) or matched placebo daily for 2 weeks. Forearm blood flow response to increasing doses of angiotensin II was measured using venous occlusion plethysmography at the begining of the study and at the end of each 2 week treatment period. Treatment with enalapril significantly reduced plasma angiotensin II levels and supine blood pressure compared to placebo. The percentage reductions in forearm blood flow in the infused arm, in response to the maximum dose of angiotensin II (50 pmol·min−1) were 53.2% at baseline, 51.4% on placebo and 59.5% on enalapril. The differences were not significantly different. This study demonstrates that supression of plasma angiotensin II does not enhance the response to exogenous intra-arterial angiotensin II in the human forearm of mild-moderately hypertensive patients.
