Notes: Background In patients with quiescent asthma, macrophages are the most prevalent cells recovered by bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL). Through activation via their FcεRII receptors or by acting as antigen-presenting cells, macrophages could, in theory, promote the late airway response to allergen.〈section xml:id="abs1-1"〉〈title type="main"〉ObjectiveIn order to investigate the importance of macrophages and other airway luminal cells in inducing the late airway response, a novel washout experiment was designed. Methods Five patients with ragweed-allergic asthma underwent bronchoscopy and segmental bronchial challenge with either normal saline or short ragweed extract in two segments of one lung. In a third segment of the opposite lung, 12 successive BALs (25 mL each) were performed, followed by challenge with an identical dose of short ragweed (washed-challenged segment). After 24 h, all three challenged segments underwent BAL.Results Initially, in the washed-challenged segment, over 80% (mean 80.4%, range 68–88%) of the recoverable airway dwelling cells were removed. Unexpectedly, 24 h later these same washed-challenged segments contained more eosinophils in the BAL than the challenged segments from the opposite lung (P = 0.033).Conclusions Removing the majority of airway luminal cells followed by allergen bronchoprovocation increased the number of eosinophils recovered 24 h after challenge. Our results suggest that in quiescent allergic asthma, the airway luminal cells are protective and attenuate the late eosinophilic response to allergen challenge.

Notes: To test whether eosinophil recruitment after pulmonary allergen challenge is associated with interleukin (IL)-5 in patients with asthma, we performed segmental bronchoprovocation (SBP) with saline, and with low and high dosages of ragweed extract in six patients with allergic asthma. Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) of the challenged segments was performed 5 min after challenge (immediate BAL fluid) and repeated 24 h later (late BAL fluid). Allergen challenge resulted in recruitment of eosinophils, and increased levels of eosinophil-active cytokines. A bioassay showed the predominant eosinophil-active cytokine in the late BAL fluids to be IL-5. Analysis of the late BAL fluids revealed that IL-5 levels correlated with the numbers of eosinophils and lymphocytes. This study provides evidence that IL-5 is a critical cytokine associated with eosinophil and lymphocyte recruitment into the airways of patients with asthma following exposure to allergen.

Notes: Summary A 30-year-old nonatopic woman had experienced a 9-year history of persistent symptoms of supraglottic edema. She had previously undergone epiglottectomy and excision of redundant left arytenoid tissue to improve her breathing and dysphagia. Uvular tissue was removed surgically at our clinic for histopathological examination of the excised tissues. This revealed diffuse infiltration by mast cells, many of which appeared degranulated. Uvular tissue from control patients undergoing uvulopalatopharyngoplasty for obstructive sleep apnea contained significantly fewer mast cells per high power field. To our knowledge such a degree of mast cell infiltration into supraglottic tissues has not been reported previously or associated with clinical symptoms.

Notes: Abstract An isomeric state at 3,523 keV excitation energy in97Y with a half-life of 144(10) ms has been discovered with the fission-product separator JOSEF. This isomer is depopulated through aγ transition of 162 keV. AnE3 multipolarity for this transition is consistent with the measured conversion coefficients ofα K =0.98(20) andα T =1.00(19). Subsequent electromagnetic transitions populate several new97Y levels which have high spins. For the isomer the three-quasiparticle configuration [πg 9/2⊗ν(h 11/2,g 7/2)]27/2− is proposed. TheE3 transition with a strength about 2 single-particle units is supposed to be of the typeh 11 2/+1 →d 5 2/−1 . These findings provide evidence for the rapid shape transition atA≃100 since they indicate shell-model character of 39 97 Y58 even at high excitation energies while the immediate neighbour 39 98 Y59 contains a rotational band based on a level at 495 keV.

Notes: Abstract A level scheme has been established for 37 94 Rb57 based on studies at the fission-product separator JOSEF ofγγ coincidences following theβ- decay of94Kr. For the 190.7 keV level a half-life of 2.5(8) ns has been determined through the centroid-shift method. The majorβ-decay branch of94Kr proceeds with log ft=3.7 into the 988.4 keV state in94Rb. This transition must be of the 0+→1+ GT type involving the transitionνg7/2→πg9/2. IBFFM calculations have been performed for94Rb, starting from the parametrization used in the previous IBM investigations for the isotope93Rb and the isotone96Y. A theoretical interpretation of the low-lying levels including propositions for the spins is given in a comparison to the available data.
