Notes: Abstract Beta delayed fission (βDF) gives a possibility to investigate the fission barrier for nuclei far off beta stability. However, before any information on the fission barrier can be extracted, the effect of low-lying structures in the beta-strength function (S β) on theβDF branching ratio has to be considered. This is in general not done. In this paper the lowlying structures that occur inS β are discussed and microscopic calculations for the Gamow-Teller strength function are presented for232Th (β −-decay) and232Pu,240Cm,244,248Cf and248Fm (β +-decay). Using the calculated strength functionsβ +DF branching ratios are calculated and compared with the experimental ones. The sensitivity of the results to different shapes ofS β is investigated. It is concluded that, when the expected structures inS β are considered, there are at present no indications fromβ + DF measurements that the errors in the fission barrier calculations are larger than the uncertainty given for those calculations. The difference in magnitude between theβ − DF and theβ +DF branching ratios is also explained by the occurrence of low-lying structures inS β.

Notes: Abstract Excitation functions and angular distributions have been measured for fission of238U induced by136Xe ions with bombarding energies between 4.5 and 5.9 MeV/N. Structures expected theoretically as characteristic for Coulomb fission have not been observed. The Q-value of −(7.5±1.0) MeV measured for bombarding energies below 4.7MeV/N, however, appears to be compatible with inelastic scattering (e.g. Coulomb excitation) rather than subcoulomb transfer followed by fission. The total kinetic energy of deep inelastic events at 5.9 MeV/N is consistent with the current knowledge about mass diffusion, but also (for the highest excitation energies) with a fast fission process in the presence of the projectile.

Notes: Abstract Earlier work has shown how information about the giant dipole resonance and proton hole states can be inferred from high resolution photoproton spectra obtained in irradiation with the 17.62 MeV gamma quanta produced by the7Li(p, γ)8Be-reaction. To exploit this method the high energy photoproton spectra from45Sc,51V,59Co,58Ni,63Cu and natural nickel have been measured with 60–120 keV resolution. The absolute cross sections for transitions to levels in the daughter nucleus have been determined. The results are compared with a simple model assuming a semidirect reaction proceeding via a dipole doorway state. Good correlation is found between the cross sections and the spectroscopic factors measured in proton pick-up reactions. Comparison with the total photoproton cross section for58Ni indicates, however, that the majority of protons are emitted at lower energies from more complicated states.
