    Notes: The solid-solution series, high-(Na2 - x, Lix)SiO3, 0.86 ≲ x ≲ 1.02, has an orthorhombic subcell similar to the unit cells of Na2SiO3 and Li2SiO3 but with a one-dimensional long-period superstructure. The ratio κ = asupercell: asubcell varies linearly with composition and integral κvalues occur at simple Na: Li ratios: κ = 6 for 1Na: 1Li (x = 1.00) and κ = 5 for 5Na: 4Li (x = 0.89). Possible origins of the superstructure are discussed.

Notes: [Auszug] The compound Rb2Be2Si2O7 was prepared by solid-state reaction between appropriate quantities of Rb2CO3, BeO and quartz. A single crystal was selected from a sample which had been heated at 950 C for three days. The orthorhombic cell dimensions are a - 8.92 A; b = 8.32 A; c - 5.15 A The intensity ...

Notes: Polycrystalline barium titanate that has been doped to give a positive temperature coefficient of resistance (PTCR) effect is an inhomogeneous material electrically. Analysis of ac impedance data using the complex impedance plane representation gives the dc resistance of PTCR ceramics. By additional use of the complex electric modulus formalism to analyze the same data, the inhomogeneous nature of the ceramics may be probed. This reveals the presence of two, sometimes three elements in the equivalent circuit. Grain-boundary and bulk effects may be distinguished from capacitance data: grain-boundary effects have temperature-independent capacitances, whereas bulk effects show a capacitance maximum at the Curie point and Curie–Weiss behavior above the Curie point. Both grain-boundary and bulk effects appear to contribute to the PTCR effect. These results reveal limitations in current theories of the PTCR effect.

Notes: Monodomain, polycrystalline hexagonal ferrites (BaFe12O19) and amorphous ribbons (Vitrovac 6025) were measured as a function of frequency with rf magnetic fields from 5 Hz to 13 MHz of various amplitudes. Monodomain ferrites showed the features of the spin rotation magnetization mechanism, while amorphous ribbons showed the low-frequency dispersion generally attributed to domain wall relaxation. However, at relatively high applied fields, a third dispersion is resolved at lower frequencies from domain wall relaxation, which can be attributed to magnetic hysteresis. By using some of the complex impedance formalisms, the relaxation character of domain wall bulging is confirmed, while hysteresis dispersion exhibited a complex behavior.

Notes: ac impedance techniques have been used to characterize ceramic samples of LiTaO3 and the solid solutions Li1−5xTa1+xO3 as a function of temperature in the range 350–800 °C. LiTaO3 has a low conductivity and the principal charge carriers appear to be electrons. At temperatures well removed from its ferroelectric Curie temperature, TC, 640 °C, a single arc or semicircle appears in the complex impedance plane representation of the ac impedance data and is attributed to the electronic resistance of the sample in parallel with the geometric capacitance. At temperatures close to TC an additional semicircle appears. This is attributed to a circuit element that includes the high capacitance values associated with the ferroelectric polarization processes. A method for extracting capacitance values from such data is given. It is shown that, under certain circumstances, fixed frequency measurements of capacitance can give rise to incorrect estimates of both TC and the magnitude of the capacitance as a function of temperature. The nonstoichiometric lithium tantalates are essentially lithium-ion vacancy conductors and the level of their conductivity may be correlated with composition and the solid solution mechanism. These materials are also ferroelectric and TC decreases with increasing departure from the stoichiometric composition.

    Notes: Three members of a new family of phases, Li3Mg2XO6: X = Nb, Ta, Sb, have been prepared by solid-state reaction of MgO and Li3XO4. Unit-cell parameters of Li3Mg2TaO6 determined by electron diffraction and refined by X-ray powder diffraction are a = 8.883(2), b = 5.802(2), c = 17.437(6) Å, with space group Fddd; z = 8. Powder diffraction data of Li3Mg2NbO6 and Li3Mg2SbO6 were indexed by analogy with those of Li3Mg2TaO6 and unit-cell dimensions obtained by least-squares refinement: Li3Mg2NbO6 a = 8.552(2), b = 5.897(1), c = 17.721(5) Å; Li3Mg2SbO6 a = 8.614 (1), b = 5.908(1), c = 17.759(5) Å.
