    Notes: Simultaneous temporally and spatially resolved measurements of the phase change and reflectivity of S- and P-polarized femtosecond laser probes are obtained from hot expanded states produced by femtosecond laser heating of a solid aluminum target. The combined set of data provides an integral test of equation-of-state models in a regime up to 10 Mbar and densities of 0.01–1 times solid. The results suggest that target stoichiometry at the few Å level should be considered in the analysis of phase and reflectivity measurements in such experiments. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have constructed two wide-band, high-resolution vacuum flat crystal spectrometers and implemented them on the Electron Beam Ion Trap located at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Working in unison, these spectrometers can measure an x-ray bandwidth ≤9 Å in the soft x-ray region below 21 Å. In order to achieve this large bandwidth each spectrometer houses either two 125 mm × 13 mm × 2 mm RAP (rubidium acid phthalate, 2d=26.121 Å), two 114 mm × 13 mm × 2 mm TlAP (thallium acid phthalate, 2d=25.75 Å) crystals, or some combination thereof, for dispersion and two position sensitive proportional counters for detection of x rays. The spectrometers are used to measure wavelengths and relative intensities of the L-shell line emission from Fe XVII–XXIV for comparison with spectra obtained from astrophysical and laboratory plasmas. The wide wavelength coverage attainable by these spectrometers makes it possible to measure all the L-shell emission from a given iron ion species simultaneously. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: High-resolution measurements of the He-like Kr K-shell radiation are presented showing the direct excitation lines as well as Li- and Be-like dielectronic recombination lines appearing in the KLL resonance. The measurements were performed on the Electron Beam Ion Trap (EBIT) facility and motivated by the need for accurate atomic data of high-Z He-like K-shell transitions for diagnostic applications in determining the central ion and electron temperature of very-high-temperature plasmas produced in next-generation tokamaks, such as the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER). © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Using x-ray spectroscopic techniques, we have investigated the properties of an electron beam ion trap (EBIT) after the electron beam is switched off. In the absence of the electron beam, bare, and hydrogenlike Kr35+ and Kr36+ ions remain trapped due to externally applied magnetic and electric fields for at least 5 s; xenon ions with an open L shell, i.e., Xe45+–Xe52+, remain trapped at least as long as 20 s. The ion storage time in this "magnetic trapping mode'' depends on the pressure of background atoms as well as on the value of the externally applied trapping potential, and even longer ion storage times appear possible. The magnetic trapping mode enables a variety of new opportunities for atomic physics research involving highly charged ions, which include the study of charge transfer reactions, Doppler-shift-free measurements of the Lamb shift, measurements of radiative lifetimes of long-lived metastable levels, or ion-ion collision studies, by x-ray or laser spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. Because the trap is filled in situ during the electron trapping phase, transfer losses associated with filling the trap from an external source are avoided. We present spectra of the K-shell emission from heliumlike and hydrogenlike Kr34+ and Kr35+ as well as Xe52+ and Xe53+ that are produced by charge transfer reactions in collisions between ions and neutral atoms. Marked differences with K-shell spectra produced by electron-impact excitation are evident. We use the measurements to infer the Lamb shift contribution to the energy of the 1s1/2–2p3/2 transition in hydrogenlike Xe53+ and determine it to be 31 276(12) eV. The measurement technique can be applied to any ion produced in an EBIT so that Doppler-shift-free Lamb shift measurements of hydrogenlike U91+ are within reach. We also illustrate the utility of the magnetic mode for lifetime determinations by measuring the 3.92(13) ms radiative decay of the 1s2s 3S1 level in heliumlike N5+. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Spectrometers were constructed with nominal resolving power λ/Δλ≤22 000 at a Bragg angle of 45° and were used to measure the temperature of ions produced and trapped in the Livermore electron-beam ion trap facility. A temperature in excess of 500 eV was found for heliumlike Ti20+ ions produced under standard operating conditions for spectroscopy. The temperature was reduced to 130 eV by lowering the trapping potential and electron-beam current. A description of the spectrometers and representative measurements are given. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: High-resolution reflection-type crystal spectrometers have been used for x-ray energies up to 13 keV, e.g., the K-shell radiation of heliumlike Kr. In order to extend crystal spectrometer measurements to higher energy x rays from higher-Z elements, we employ the crystal in transmission. The geometry we use is known as DuMond geometry. Using such a transmission-type crystal x-ray spectrometer, we have measured the K-shell radiation of various highly charged high-Z ions. In particular, we present a measurement of the 1s2p 1P1→1s2 1S0 transition in heliumlike xenon, Xe52+. For this transition, we measure a linewidth of 34 eV, which demonstrates that the resolving power we achieved with the new spectrometer is on the order of 1000. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A gas-filled position-sensitive proportional counter was constructed for the detection and analysis of x rays in the 8–20 keV range. The detector's active volume is 9.5×3×0.4 cm3. Based on an earlier design, the cathode incorporates a 160-ns delay line, etched using printed-circuit techniques. The detector operates at an 80-psig gas pressure and achieves a spatial resolution as low as 80 μm and linearity better than 25 μm. The counting efficiency ranges from 80% at 8 keV to 37% at 20 keV. The new detector allowed efficient recording of high-resolution spectra of the K emission lines from heliumlike Ge30+ and Kr34+. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Polarization spectroscopy of x-ray lines represents a diagnostic tool to ascertain the presence of electron beams in high-temperature plasmas. Making use of the Livermore electron beam ion trap, which optimizes the linear x-ray line polarization by exciting highly charged ions with a monoenergetic electron beam, we have begun to develop polarization diagnostics and test theoretical models. Our measurement relies on the sensitivity of crystal spectrometers to the linear polarization of x-ray lines which depends on the value of the Bragg angle. We employed two spectrometers with differing analyzing crystals and simultaneously recorded the K-shell emission from heliumlike Fe24+ and lithiumlike Fe23+ ions at two different Bragg angles. A clear difference in the relative intensities of the dominant transitions is observed, which is attributed to the amount of linear polarization of the individual lines. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract The CAM (Crassulacean acid metabolism) succulent species Kalanchoe daigremontiana, K. tubiflora and Crassula argentea, and the succulent C3 species Peperomia obtusifolia, were cultivated in pure culture in open-air conditions under two different regimes of nitrogen and water supply. At specified intervals during the course of vegetative growth, biomass, nitrate reductase activity (NRA), nitrate concentration, and organic nitrogen concentration of whole plants were measured. After 100 days of cultivation the leaf conductance of Crassula and Peperomia was measured at intervals for the duration of a day. Behaviour of all four species was strongly influenced by the cultivation regime. This was apparent in terms of productivity and variable flucturations in NRA, nitrate concentration, and organic nitrogen concentration during the vegetative period. Increase in biomass was mostly connected with a decrease in all other investigated parameters, especially under conditions of water and/or nitrogen deficiency. The typical reaction of the CAM species Crassula to limited netrogen but adequate soil water was to reduce leaf conductance during light, whereas the C3 plant Peperomia increased conductance in comparison with plants having a nitrogen suppy. The NRA of all plant species was reduced by both soil nitrate deficiency and drought. The succulent plant species, which are specially adapted to drought, neither took up nor used nitrate when water was limited. This was particularly the case for the CAM species, but less so for the C3 Peperomia, which showed very high concentrations of nitrate and organic nitrogen, but low NRA and biomass gain. A formula was derived to express the nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) of the species, i.e. the ability of a plant to use nitrogen over a specific period of growth. NUE was shown to increase with age for the crassulacean species but to decrease for the C3 Peperomia. Furthermore, NUE varied with the different nutrient levels in a species-specific manner, with high values for NUE not necessarily coupled to high productivity, and with NUE of the C3 species generally higher than that of CAM species.

    Notes: Summary Two CAM plant species (Kalanchoe daigremontiana and K. tubiflora) were cultivated in pure cultures with two different levels of nitrogen and water supply. A comparison of the plant dry weight showed that the productivity was severely reduced under low nitrogen or/and water conditions. Additionally the proportion of the different organs contributing to the total biomass, and thus the ratio of root/shoot dry weight shifted substantially. At the same time the production of leaf buds in ratio to leaf biomass was increased. Concentrations of organic nitrogen and nitrate in the shoots were drastically reduced under low nitrogen or/and water conditions, but organic nitrogen concentration in the roots remained relatively high. The leaf conductance over a day was investigated only for K. daigremontiana, and decreased with reduced water and nitrogen supply. The results indicate that CAM plants do not have the predicted high nitrogen use efficiency. Under environmental stress they change from biomass production towards provisions for life preservation.
