Notes: The polymerization of rigid rod polymer precursors in a reactive matrix precursor, which is later cured in the mold, constitutes the in situ process. A poly-azomethine (PAM) was used as the rigid rod molecule. The resin used was an epoxy. We discuss the prediction of mechanical properties using micromechanics equations for chopped fiber composites. The chemistry used to synthesize the rigid rod polymer PAM in the epoxy precursor is reviewed. Approaches to better control the cure of these epoxy systems through cure kinetics and cure rheology studies completes the thermoset in situ molecular composite process. There was a 71% increase in tensile modulus in comparison to that of the neat epoxy resin. Molecular modeling simulations and continuum mechanics are used to help understand these findings. PAM/epoxy systems were used as a matrix material in the fabrication of unidirectional glass fiber/(PAM/epoxy) structural composites. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: A reliable semiempirical method for predicting glass transition tempertures of linear polymers, random copolymers, and selected crosslinked networks from knowledge of only their chemical structure is presented. For cases in which new moieties not in the database are encountered, a scaling technique of similar moiety contributions has proven successful. The basic database was composed of 178 linear homopolymers ranging from aliphatic to aromatic heterocyclic polymers and 12 random copolymers. The crosslinked networks investigated in this study involved only diacetylene end-group reactions.

Notes: The Fujita equation relating molecular weight distribution to concentration of solution subjected to centrifugal forces in equilibrium proved to be an improperly posed problem in the Hadamard sense. Application of Tikhonov's regularizing functions leads to a good approximate solution of Fujita's equation. Such functions have been applied to a monomodal and a bimodal molecular weight distribution, and approximate results have been computed.

Notes: Phase diagrams of two types of rigid rod polymer/flexible coil polymer/methanesulfonic acid (MSA) ternary systems were determined by polarized optical microscopy at ambient conditions. The rigid rod polymer is a wholly aromatic high temperature resistant (no measurable Tg) poly (p-phenylenebenzobisthiazole) (PPBT). One of the flexible coil polymers is a wholly aromatic high temperature resistant poly (2,5′(6′) benzimidazole) (ABPBI), the other is a thermoplastic poly[2,2′ -(1-4-phenylene)-6,6′ -bis (3-phenyl-quinoxaline)] (PPQ) with Tg of 359°C. The solvent is methane-sulfonic acid (MSA). The experimentally determined critical concentration points, Ccr, are in excellent agreement with Flory's recent theory. Total phase segregation between the polymer pair in ternary solution was predicted and observed at C 〉 Ccr. Different decomposition mechanisms of phase separation were observed as a function of concentration.

Notes: Experimental studies of fiber wet-spinning and solution processing of films of molecular composites are presented. The rigid rod polymer was poly (p-phenylenebenzobisthiazole) (PPBT) and the flexible polymers were poly (2,5(6′)-benzimidazole) (ABPBI) and poly (2,5(6′)-benzothiazole) (ABPBT). Effects of the flexible polymer molecular entanglements in solution on the processing are discussed. These fibers and films have very high modulus and strength, which improve upon heat treatment. The uniaxial modulus of highly oriented molecular composites follows the linear rule of mixtures.

Notes: Rigid rod molecular composites involve molecular level mixing of two polymers having greatly disparate chain conformations (one rodlike and one flexible coil like). Morphology studies have shown that in such materials the bundle diameter of these rigid rod molecules is less than 5 nm. The rigid rod molecule used is poly(para-phenylene benzobisthiazole) (PPBT). The thermoplastic flexible polymer matrix is Nylon-66, DuPont's Zytel 42. Thermal analysis studies on these materials indicate that the expected Tg shifts, as observed for blends of two flexible polymers, and depression of Tm with increased rod molecule composition does not occur.

Notes: Two different polybenzimidazole (PBI) samples have been investigated in order to correlate the differences in molecular weight distribution (MWD) with changes in the elastic modulus and strength of undrawn and drawn fibers. It has been found that within the weight-average molecular weight range (7,000 ≤ Mw ≤ 13,000) there was no obvious correlation with Mw and Mn. However, one sample had a narrow unimodal molecular weight distribution and the other a wide bimodal molecular weight distribution. The small percentage of high molecular weight present in the latter sample gave its fibers better mechanical properties. X-ray diffraction studies showed that the orientation in both drawn fiber samples was equal. This isolated the effects of the molecular weight distribution on mechanical properties.
