    Notes: Since modern high frequency device technology is shifting towards planar miniaturization, ferrite films will play an important role in facilitating the design and fabrication nonreciprocal monolithic integrated devices such as isolators and circulators. The authors have examined magnetic and structural properties for a series of pulsed laser deposited (PDL) single crystal MnZn-ferrite films. The films were epitaxially grown on (001) MgO at substrate temperatures of 300 °C, 400 °C, 600 °C, and 800 °C in an oxygen partial pressure of 30 mTorr. The film microstructure, crystal structure, and composition were characterized by SEM, x-ray diffraction and atomic absorption spectroscopy, respectively. The magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant K1, uniaxial anisotropy constant Ku, saturation magnetization Ms, and coercive force Hc were examined by torque and vibrating sample magnetometry. Ferrimagnetic resonance measurements were made on the films to obtain the linewidth ΔH. A comparison of the magnetic, structural, and chemical properties shows that K1 and Ms scale with the Fe2+ ion concentration and that Ku, Ms, and ΔH are very sensitive to the microstructure. The values of K1, Ms, and ΔH obtained for films deposited at 800 °C were compared with those of bulk MnZn-ferrite and found to exceed the bulk values (Table I), thus making PLD ferrite films very attractive for nonreciprocal device applications.

    Notes: We have applied extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy to study the cation distribution in a series of spin-sprayed NiZn-ferrite films, Ni0.15ZnyFe2.85−yO4 (y=0.16, 0.23, 0.40, 0.60). The Ni, Zn, and Fe EXAFS were collected from each sample and analyzed to Fourier transforms. Samples of Ni-ferrite, Zn-ferrite, and magnetite were similarly studied as empirical standards. These standards, together with EXAFS data generated from the theoretical EXAFS FEFF codes, allowed the correlation of features in the Fourier transforms with specific lattice sites in the spinel unit cell. We find that the Ni ions reside mostly on the octahedral (B) sites whereas the Zn ions are predominantly on the tetrahedral (A) sites. The Fe ions reside on both A and B sites in a ratio determined by the ratio of Zn/Fe. The addition of Zn displaces a larger fraction of Fe cations onto the B sites serving to increase the net magnetization. The fraction of A site Ni ions is measured to increase peaking at ≈25% for y=0.6. At higher Zn concentrations (y≥0.5) the lattice experiences local distortions around the Zn sites causing a decrease in the superexchange resulting in a decrease in the net magnetization. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The development of a radiochemical enzyme assay for p-octopamine in 1969 led to its identification in a large number of invertebrate nerve systems and in mammalian sympathetic nerves. The original method by which p-octopamine was measured has now been found to be nonspecific; however, modifications of this procedure can determine both m- and p-octopamine. We recently developed a new specific method for the unequivocal identification and quantitative determination in tissue of the six octopamine and synephrine isomers. With this method—negative chemical ionization gas chromatography-mass spectrometry—the more physiologically active m-octopamine has been found in association with p-octopamine in 10 organs of the rat. m-Octopamine is present in concentrations equal to those of p-octopamine in heart, spleen, and liver and in concentrations from 30 to 60% of p-octopamine in adrenals, vas deferens, brain, kidney, large intestine, bladder, and lungs. In vivo inhibition of monoamine oxidase markedly increased the concentrations of both m- and p-octopamine in all organs examined. Both amines were virtually absent from all organs except the adrenals following chemical sympathectomy with 6-hydroxydopamine, thereby establishing that m- and p-octopamine are localized within sympathetic nerve endings.

    Notes: The magnetic and structural properties of pulsed laser deposited MnZn–ferrite films have been examined. The results show that the uniaxial anisotropy, ferromagnetic resonance linewidth and coercive force are strongly influenced by the microstructure of the films, and the saturation magnetization and first-order magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant depend on intrinsic properties such as composition and cation site occupation. A comparison of bulk and film magnetic properties shows that the magnetic properties of the films are comparable to the bulk, which makes pulsed laser deposition ferrite films a prime candidate for thin film high-frequency microwave device applications.

    Notes: The authors have examined magnetic and structural properties for a series of pulsed laser ablated single crystal MnZn-ferrite films. The films were epitaxially grown on (001) MgO with substrate temperatures ranging from 300 to 900 °C in oxygen pressures of 15, 30, 60, and 90 mTorr. Contrary to conventional belief, the stoichiometry of pulsed laser deposited ferrite films does not necessarily reflect that of the target. We found the film compositions vary with substrate temperature as well as with the oxygen pressure during deposition. A comparison of the magnetic, structural, and chemical properties shows (1) the magnetization scales with Fe2+ ion concentration for all oxygen pressures and (2) the coercive force is sensitive to the microstructure. Magnetization values for films deposited at 60 and 90 mTorr were found to exceed those of bulk MnZn ferrites; for some deposition temperatures the magnetization exceeded that of bulk by a factor of 2.5. This increase in magnetization is explained in terms of the excess number of Fe2+ ions on the octahedral site of the MnZn-ferrite spinel structure.     Notes: When examined by gas chromatography, methylated acid extracts of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) contain large numbers (20–40) of constituents ranging in concentration from about 1 to 30 μg/ml. We have recently undertaken the identification of these constituents by the use of chemical ionization mass spectrometry and electron impact mass spectrometry as primary tools. In this paper we report the identification in CSF of N-benzoylglycine (hippuric acid), an acid not hitherto reported in CSF.

    Notes: An ‘ecological’ method of wheat bulb fly (Leptohylemyia coarctata (Fall.)) control was investigated in 1966/1967. This involved the exclusion of winter wheat and winter rye in 1966 from about 2,000 acres (800 ha) of organic soil in an area usually subject to heavy attacks. In the centre of this experimental area, the mean egg count was reduced from 763,000 per acre (1,885,000/ha) in 1966 to 198,000 per acre (489,000/ha) in 1967 and in the intermediate area from 1,058,000 to 677,000 eggs per acre (2,614,000 to 1,673,000/ha). There was no egg reduction in the fields adjacent to the experimental area. This and the observations on adults suggest that most flies do not travel much over 1/4-1/2 mile (0⋅4–0⋅8 km) from their emergence sites.The examination of wild host grasses in and surrounding a number of fields indicated that they are inefficient hosts and therefore unimportant in the build-up and maintenance of wheat bulb fly populations.Although this method of wheat bulb fly control is feasible, the substitution of spring sown cereals for winter wheat has several disadvantages which are briefly discussed.
