Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Bei 8 Frauen mit Anorexia nervosa wurde die Ausscheidung des Testosterons im Harn untersucht.
Notes: Summary The excretion of testosterone was determined in 8 women with anorexia nervosa, which was elevated in 6 of these patients. Urinary 17-ketosteroid values were in the normal range or below normal. An increased aldosterone excretion was found in one case.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary In cerebrospinal fluids (CSF) of patients with acute inflammatory cerebral diseases, brain atrophies and tumours of the CNS we observed a higher activity of adenosine deaminase than in normal persons. Activities in CSF of patients with epilepsies, vascular, degenerative and chronical inflammatory cerebral diseases did not differ from normal values. The range of activities found in normal CSF was 0–0,26 IU. The results were discussed. The estimation of adenosine deaminase activity in CSF was commended as an additional diagnostical method in unclear neurological diseases.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Application of a synthetic progestin in guineapigs for 4 weeks is followed by a decrease of the 17-hydroxycorticosteroid excretion in urine. After cessation of treatment the „rebound effect“ with exceeding urinary 17-OHCS indicates the reappearance of undiminished adrenal function, occuring earlier than in cortisone-treated animals. Combined treatment with both hormones does not seem to produce an additional depression, compared with the effects of the single substances alone.

Notes: Abstract   Objective: To describe how patients cope with the propos-al of treatment with intermittent artificial ventilation after acute respiratory failure due to progressive respiratory muscle weakness. Design: Case series, follow-up study. Setting: Neurological intensive care unit (ICU). Patients: 7 consecutive patients with metabolic myopathy treated for acute respiratory failure between 1983 and 1992. interventions: Intermittent positive pressure ventilation (IPPV) via tracheostomy. Measurements and results: Symptoms of chronic hypoventilation preceded acute respiratory failure for months. With one exception, patients were mainly disabled from respiratory muscle weakness and sleep-related breathing disorders. IPPV was recommended to prevent recurrent respiratory failure. Two of 28.8nthree patients who accepted home IPPV returned to full-time jobs. One patient, who decided against IPPV, died from CO2 narcosis several months after discharge. All patients adhered to the respiratory regimen once instituted. Conclusions: Acute respiratory failure in chronic myopathy is heralded by daytime drowsiness. IPPV, or at least regular monitoring of waking and sleeping partial pressure of carbon dioxide, is highly recommended even if weaning is successful. IPPV improved quality of life. The treatment strategy at discharge from the ICU should be optimal, as patients are reluctant to modify regimens.

Notes: Summary A short description of the transmitting and receiving organ of Gnathonemus petersii is followed by results of experiments carried out to measure the sensitivity of the receptors for external signals (communication) and for distortions of the own electric field (active object location) with and without additive noise. Possible principles of reception are synchronous, asynchronous and threshold receivers; further experiments indicate the threshold receiver to be the most probable structure. Treating the active object location as a problem of statistical communication theory yields for small disturbances to a generalized cross-correlator, which in this case behaves like a threshold receiver.
