    Notes: Abstract An integrative overview of the algorithmic characteristics of three well-known polynomialtime heuristics for the undirected Steiner minimum tree problem:shortest path heuristic (SPH),distance network heuristic (DNH), andaverage distance heuristic (ADH) is given. The performance of thesesingle-pass heuristics (and some variants) is compared and contrasted with several heuristics based onrepetitive applications of the SPH. It is shown that two of these repetitive SPH variants generate solutions that in general are better than solutions obtained by any single-pass heuristic. The worst-case time complexity of the two new variants isO(pn 3) andO(p 3 n 2), while the worst-case time complexity of the SPH, DNH, and ADH is respectivelyO(pn 2),O(m + n logn), andO(n 3) wherep is the number of vertices to be spanned,n is the total number of vertices, andm is the total number of edges. However, use of few simple tests is shown to provide large reductions of problem instances (both in terms of vertices and in term of edges). As a consequence, a substantial speed-up is obtained so that the repetitive variants are also competitive with respect to running times.

    Notes: Abstract The generalized Steiner problem (GSP) is concerned with the determination of a minimum cost subnetwork of a given network where some (not necessarily all) vertices satisfy certain pairwise (vertex or edge) connectivity requirements. The GSP has applications to the design of water and electricity supply networks, communication networks and other large-scale systems where connectivity requirements ensure the communication between the selected vertices when some vertices and/or edges can become inoperational due to scheduled maintenance, error, or overload. The GSP is known to beNP-complete. In this paper we show that if the subnetwork is required to be biconnected or respectively edge-biconnected, and the underlying network is outerplanar, the GSP can be solved in linear time.

    Notes: Abstract The problem of constructing Steiner minimal trees in the Euclidean plane is NP-hard. When in addition obstacles are present, difficulties of constructing obstacle-avoiding Steiner minimal trees are compounded. This problem, which has many obvious practical applications when designing complex transportation and distribution systems, has received very little attention in the literature. The construction of Steiner minimal trees for three terminal points in the Euclidean plane (without obstacles) has been completely solved (among others by Fermat, Torricelli, Cavallieri, Simpson, Heinen) during the span of the last three centuries. This construction is a cornerstone for both exact algorithms and heuristics for the Euclidean Steiner tree problem with arbitrarily many terminal points. An algorithm for three terminal points in the presence of one polygonal convex obstacle is given. It is shown that this algorithm has the worst-case time complexityO(n), wheren is the number of extreme points on the obstacle. As an extension to the underlying algorithm, if the obstacle is appropriately preprocessed inO(n) time, we can solve any problem instance with three arbitrary terminal points and the preprocessed convex polygonal obstacle inO(logn) time. We believe that the three terminal points algorithm will play a critical role in the development of heuristics for problem instances with arbitrarily many terminal points and obstacles.

    Notes: Abstract Enumeration of spanning trees of an undirected graph is one of the graph problems that has received much attention in the literature. In this paper a new enumeration algorithm based on the idea of contractions of the graph is presented. The worst-case time complexity of the algorithm isO(n+m+nt) wheren is the number of vertices,m the number of edges, andt the number of spanning trees in the graph. The worst-case space complexity of the algorithm isO(n 2). Computational analysis indicates that the algorithm requires less computation time than any other of the previously best-known algorithms.
