    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Experimentelle Injektionsbehandlung von Meerschweinchen mit Extrakten aus der weißen Hirnsubstanz des Rindes ergaben, daß das encephalitogene Protein vorzugsweise oder ausschließlich in der anionen-empfindlichen Fraktion und im ionen-unempfindlichen Rückstand der Gehirnmarkscheiden verbleibt. Diese Lokalisation entspricht in den Myelinlamellen den Fortsetzungen der den intracellulären Raum begrenzende Plasma-membranen sowie den elektronenstrahlendichten Linien (dense lines) des Myelins.
    Notes: Summary Experiments on guinea pigs injected with extracts of bovine white matter have indicated that the encephalitogenic protein resides mainly, or only, in the anion-sensitive fraction and in the ion-insensitive residue of white matter myelin. In the myelin sheath structure this location corresponds to the continuation of layers of plasma membranes facing the intracellular space and to the dense lines of myelin in electron micrographs.

    Notes: Summary 1. Sodium fluorescein and Evans Blue, commonly used tracers in the study of blood-brain barrier disturbances, revealed considerable differences in their respective protein binding capacity in the plasma, passage through the barrier and in the rate of their elimination from the brain parenchyma. 2. In the plasma a considerable portion of the sodium fluorescein remains free and behaves like a micromolecular barrier tracer. On the other hand, almost complete binding of the Evans Blue to albumin confers to it properties of a protein tracer. 3. Following the extravasation of the tracers, the sodium fluorescein is relatively soon eliminated, whereas Evans Blue remains in the cellular elements of the brain parenchyma for a considerable time, although the protein moiety of the tracer is removed much sooner from the cytoplasm of glial cells, presumably by the lysosomal digestion.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wird ein Fall von amaurotischer Idiotie bei einem im Alter von 21/2 Jahren verstorbenen Kinde beschrieben. Der pathologische Hirnbefund ist für diese Krankheit charakteristisch. Histochemische Untersuchungen zeigen, daß die in den Neuronen gespeicherte Substanz aus einem Gemisch von hauptsächlich neutralen Glykolipiden und von Cholesterin besteht. Der Befund des beschriebenen Falles, sowie die Befunde von einigen Fällen der Literatur weisen darauf hin, daß die Zusammensetzung des gespeicherten Materials in den einzelnen Fällen dieser Erkrankung nicht gleichartig sein muß. Die Möglichkeit wird erwogen, daß die amaurotische Idiotie ein Syndrom ist, das in der Vielfalt der Fälle durch verschiedene metabolische Störungen hervorgerufen wird.
    Notes: Summary A case of familial amaurotic idiocy in a child which died at the age of two and one half years is described. The pathological findings in the brain were typical for the disease. Histochemical examination revealed that the substance stored in the neurones was a mixture containing mainly a neutral glycolipid and cholesterol. The findings in this case, taken together with other reports in the literature indicate that the composition of the substance stored in various cases of amaurotic idiocy may vary to a great extent. The possibility is envisaged that amaurotic idiocy might be a syndrome which is due to different metabolic derangements in the various cases.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wird über zwei Fälle von subpialer Siderose des ZNS berichtet. Ein Fall bot klinisch, eine typische Kombination von Anosmie, beidseitiger Taubheit und Läsionen seitens der langen Bahnen, die eine Diagnosie intra vitam ermöglichen könnte. Die zweite Beobachtung bestätigt das Auftreten der pathologischen Veränderungen nach wiederholten Subarachnoidalblutungen.
    Notes: Summary Two cases of subpial siderosis, of the central nervous system are presented. One of these conformed clinically to the picture of anosmia, bilateral nerve deafness and long tract signs, a combination which may enable the diagnosis to be entertained during life. The second case provided confirmation that the pathological features may follow repeated subarachnoid bleeding.

    Notes: Summary Mineralized dead cells were found in infarcted areas in the cerebella of three chicks killed in the healing stage of nutritional encephalopathy. The mineral deposits were found in vacuoles and consisted of radially packed threads and spicules, concentric laminated structures and centrally located amorphous masses. The cells in which these deposits were found were positively identified as astrocytes and macrophages. The presence of such deposits in neurons was suspected but not proven.
