Notes: Summary Report of a 33-year-old man with a yearlong historory of low-back pain radiating into the left leg. Neurologic examination upon admission tto the hospital revealed a spinal compression syndrome at the lovel L5. Laminectomy at L4/5 revealed an encapsulated intradural tumor measuring 4×2.5×2.5 cm. The tumor was attached to the dorsal root L4 and extended downward to the conus region. Light and electron microscopy revealed features mostly consistent with a mixed chemodectoma and ganglioneuroma.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary An Alcian blue staining, perchloric acid-soluble, antigenic acidic mucosubstance (GOA) was purified from human gastric signet ring cell carcinoma with DEAE-cellulose chromatography, Seqhadex G-200 and preparative polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Specific antisera were raised which reacted in indirect immunoenzyme histology with normal goblet cells of the small and large intestine and with goblet cells of intestinalized gastric mucosa. In surgical resection specimens of the stomach (n=100) and of the colon (n=19) 3 gastric signet ring cell carcinomas and 3 colonic colloidal adenocarcinomas stained for GOA, demonstrating an immunochemical relationship with normal intestinal goblet cells.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary By using an enzyme-bridge immunoperoxidase (PAP) technique, localization of so-called pregnancy-specific β1-glycoprotein (SP1) and placental-specific tissue proteins (PP5, PP10, PP11, PP12) was investigated in 19 cases of breast cancer, 24 cases of testicular malignant tumours, 12 cases of gastric cancer and some cases of other malignant tumours. These five glycoproteins isolated from human term placentae and characterized by Bohn are localised mainly in the cytoplasm, or nucleus of syncytiotrophoblast and appear to be specific for the trophoblast. But to a certain percentage these proteins could also be detected in the cytoplasma of malignant cells: In breast cancer, SP1 was present in 52.6% of cases, PP5 in 63.2%, PP10 in 68.4%, PP11 in 55.6% and PP12 in 31.6%. In testicular malignant tumours the detection rates of these proteins varied from 20.8 to 75.0% and in gastric cancer from 41.7 to 66.7%. In total 50% of the tumours tested were SP1-positive, 58.3% PP5-positive, 55.6% PP10-positive, 38.0% PP11-positive and 31.9% PP12-positive. In addition, it was found that mononuclear histiocytes showed a strong cytoplasmic staining for PP10 and PP12 and that a few other non-cancerous cells (i.e. striated cells in gastric metaplasia, gastric polyps etc.) stained for PP5, PP10, PP11 and/or PP12. All control sections were negative in malignant cells as well as in other tissue cells. This study confirms the reports that some kinds of malignant tumours produce SP1 and indicates that the ectopic production of proteins normally produced by the trophoblast is a common finding in malignant tumours. It furthermore suggests that such proteins may be useful as markers in monitoring patients with malignant diseases. The possible mechanisms of ectopic production of these inappropriate proteins in malignant tumours are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Case report of a newborn infant with acute respiratory distress. Roentgenologic signs of patches of increased density with scattered round and oval areas of radiolucency suggested the diagnosis of congenital cystic adenomatoid pulmonary hamartoma. Diaphragmatic hernia had to be excluded by a gastrografin®-meal gastrointestinal series. During surgery a right lower lobectomy was done. The diagnosis was proved by gross and microscopic examinations of the affected parenchyma of the lung.

Notes: Summary Goblet cell antigen (GOA1) was purified from gastric signet ring cell carcinoma. It was immunogenic and was used to produce antisera which stained goblet cells of the small and large intestine and of intestinalized gastric mucosa by indirect immunological methods. Various types of gastric and colonic cancer contained GOA1. These findings demonstrate a histiogenic relationship between intestinal goblet cells, various gastrointestinal cancers and associated premalignant conditions.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die malignen Lymphome des Hodens machen ca. 3–8% sämtlicher Hodentumoren aus.
Notes: Summary Malignant lymphoma of the testis is rare, accounting for only about 3–8% of all testicular neoplasms. The most common type of these tumors is the reticulum cell sarcoma. Its histopathological features are described. Malignant lymphoma tends to occur after the age of 60, as opposed to germ cell tumors: occurrence in children is rarely reported. The right testicle is more frequently affected than the left. Over 50% of all bilateral testicular tumors are malignant lymphoma. Association of a testicular neoplasm with a lesion of the skin or upper respiratory tract is a sign that aids in the diagnosis of malignant lymphoma. In most cases, malignant lymphoma of the testis are metastases of a generalized disease. On frequent occasions, however, the malignant lymphoma is clinically localized in the testis without evidence of generalized involvement. Even these patients usually follow a rapid downhill course. It is likely that clinically “primary” testicular lymphoma represents precocious development of an already disseminated but subclinical disease. The diagnosis of primary malignant lymphoma of the testis ist valid only in retrospect in long-term survivors without evidence of recurrence. Prognosis of malignant lymphoma is poor.

Notes: Summary We compared eight different histological and cytological qualities of colon and rectum tumors from 78 autopsied patients who had been clinically studied and treated. From the obtained values we calculated the CHI-squares and converted them into PHI-correlationcoefficients. The matrix of the obtained correlation-coefficients served for the further studies of cluster-analysis. We related biochemical and biophysical information about tumor biology gathered from the literature with the histological qualities we detected in the routinely prepared sections of tumor. The calculations of the cluster-analyses pointed to the existence of relationships between cytological qualities of a tumor, its histological qualities, and clinical information about the patient. From the structure of the statistical relationschips of dependancy, however, a significant error may result from an inadvertent selection of tissue and from the histological techniques of staining and sectioning.
