    Notes: Abstract The effect of food density on the growth, survival, and swimming activity of plaice larvae (Pleuronectes platessa L.) was investigated under controlled laboratory conditions. Suboptimal food concentrations decrease the growth of the height of the body musculature relative to length, and increase the amount of time spent searching for food. Older larvae are able to withstand much longer periods without food than young larvae. On the basis of these experiments, it is suggested that food limitation in a larval plaice population is likely to result in a concave mortality curve.

    Notes: Abstract The biology of populations of Oikopleura dioica Fol and Fritillaria borealis Lohmann in the Southern Bight of the North Sea is deseribed on the basis of plankton collections made in 1962, 1963, and 1968. The distribution of appendicularians is related to the hydrography of the region, and it has been possible to follow the history of individual patches through several consecutive cruises. O. dioica, is characteristic of Channel water moving through the centre of the region, and F. borealis of continental coastal water. This pattern was well marked in 1968, but was obscured during 1962. The difference is attributed to unusual meteorological conditions during 1962. Smaller-scale distributional features which appear late in the history of a patch are possibly accounted for by predation. The ability to follow patches for several months has, in turn, permitted a description of the growth pattern of O. dioica to be made, and the generation times is calculated to be 144 days. In addition, the sexual development of both species is described, so that a fairly detailed picture of these populations emerges. Some of the features of the 1968 collections which have made this analysis possible are emphasized.

    Notes: Abstract: We have monitored glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) secretion from rat C6 glioblastoma cells by ELISA. Representative cytokines, neurotrophins, growth factors, neuropeptides, and pharmacological agents were tested for their ability to modulate GDNF release. Whereas most factors tested had minimal effect, a 24-h treatment with fibroblast growth factor-1, −2, or −9 elevated secreted GDNF protein levels five- to 10-fold. The proinflammatory cytokines interleukin-1β, interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-α, and lipopolysaccharide elevated GDNF release 1.5- to twofold. Parallel studies aimed at elucidating intracellular events that may regulate GDNF synthesis/release demonstrated the involvement of multiple signaling pathways. GDNF levels were increased by phorbol 12,13-didecanoate (10 nM) activation of protein kinase C, the Ca2+ ionophore A23187 (1 µM), okadaic acid (10 nM) inhibition of type-2A protein phosphatases, nitric oxide donors (1 mM), and H2O2 (1 mM)-induced oxidative stress. Elevation of cyclic AMP levels by either forskolin (10 µM) or dibutyryl cyclic AMP (1 mM) repressed GDNF secretion, as did treatment with the glucocorticoid dexamethasone (1 µM). Our results demonstrate that diverse biological factors are capable of modulating GDNF protein levels and that multiple signal transduction systems can regulate GDNF synthesis and/or release.

    Notes: In 1992, the National Rivers Authority published a discussion document on the National Water Resource Strategy which highlighted the future probability of a water-supply deficit in the south-east and a surplus in the north and west of England and Wales. One suggestion for rectifying this imbalance was to divert Lake Vyrnwy water which, at present, supplies Liverpool. This would allow further regulation of the River Severn, and subsequent transfer to the River Thames. Joint investigations by the National Rivers Authority and North West Water have established the implications of this diversion on the existing water resources and supply systems of North West Water.The studies considered (a) the relationship between increased regulation releases, and reduced direct supply rates from Lake Vyrnwy, (b) the investment and operating cost implications of replacing Lake Vyrnwy supplies from sources within the southern command zone or by transfer from the northern command zone, and (c) the potential operational difficulties.The paper describes how each of these aspects has been addressed. The results demonstrate the necessity of evaluating Lake Vyrnwy as a component of the integrated water supply systems of North West Water, and of other parts of the country.

    Notes: Abstract Male X. rufovillosumdonate on average 13.5% of their body weight to the female during copulation. The weight transferred is significantly greater in heavier males and declines in subsequent matings. When virgin females are offered a choice of several mates, they tend to mate with a heavy male. Females appear to be selective during courtship, refusing to mate with light males. Artificial weights attached to males increase the frequency of acceptance as mates by females, but not significantly. The evolutionary origins and significance of a large paternal investment and apparent female selection for heavy mates are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract In contrast to ad hoc methods of developing traps for pest monitoring systems, a systematic approach using direct observation of animals allowed a greater understanding of the reasons why trap catch was significantly different in traps of basically similar design. The information gained using this approach could then be used to guide the further development of the trap. The same feature on two related designs of cockroach trap was varied: the slope of the ramp leading into the trap was either 60°, 30°, or 0°. The 30° ramp version of both traps caught significantly more Blattella germanica (L.) (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae). The 60° and 0° ramp versions both caught equal, lower, numbers but observation showed that these net catches were achieved by quite different means; few insects entered over the 60° ramps but none escaped, whereas all entered over the 0° ramps but half escaped. Similar approaches could be applied to other insect-trap systems.

    Notes: Abstract The host-selection behavior of three species of grasshopper feeding on creosote bush,Larrea tridentata, in southern California was investigated. The species wereBootettix argentatus, which is monophagous;Ligurotettix coquilletti, oligophagous; andCibolacris parviceps, polyphagous. The monophagous species is stimulated to bite by nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA), a compound that is characteristic of the host plant and that may comprise up to 10% of the dry weight of the leaf. Host specificity ofB. argentatus is enhanced by deterrent responses to compounds present in the surface waxes of all non-host-plant species. Both the oligophagous and polyphagous species are deterred by NDGA at naturally occurring concentrations. Their association withLarrea is probably based on tolerance of the plant chemicals rather than on dependence on specific chemicals. Factors other than the chemistry of the plant probably also contribute to the specificity ofB. argentatus andL. coquilletti.
