Notes: In surface resistance measurement of high Tc superconducting (HTS) thin films, the conventional resonant perturbation methods have large uncertainties, because their calibrators usually have much larger surface resistance than HTS thin films. This article describes a new type of calibrator, mirror-image calibrator: when the open end of a dielectric resonator is connected to its mirror image, the resonant frequency and quality factor of the resonator are equal to those of the dielectric resonator when its open end is shorted by a perfect conductor. This principle is applied to modify the dielectric resonator method in surface resistance measurement of HTS thin films. The structures of the dielectric resonator for surface resistance measurement (Rs probe) and its mirror-image calibrator are explained in detail. Comparison is made between the present technique and the conventional perturbation technique, and results show that the accuracy and sensitivity of the resonant perturbation method are greatly improved by using the mirror-image calibrator. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Doping techniques are of great importance in developing new materials and devices. We present here a novel approach for doping impurity in thin film by using dual-beam pulsed-laser deposition technique that allows in situ controlling doping under a wide range of conditions. We demonstrated doping Ag in situ in YBa2Cu3O7−δ thin films and for the first time observed long bar-like Ag structures with a length up to 150 μm in the as-deposited films, which may have important application in the fabrication of superconductor-normal metal-superconductor Josephson junctions. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A new mode of 0°–360° bistable twisted nematic (BTN) liquid crystal display is developed by using a parameter space method. This new mode possesses a large dΔn value that provides a possibility of using a 4.8–7 μm cell gap and a 6.5 V operating voltage for the new 0°–360° BTN cells. The high-contrast ratios above 80 within −80°–80° viewing-angle ranges are obtained experimentally in a horizontal direction, and the highest contrast ratio achieved is up to 250. In the contrast ratio, the experiment's results concur with the simulation results. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A π/2 and 5π/2 twist bistable nematic liquid crystal cell is optimized in optics by a parameter space approach. The cell possesses good contrast ratio, a preferable dΔn value, a wide viewing angle, and black–white display. Three switching wave forms can be used to switch the cell between π/2 and 5π/2 twist states. Controlling the selection voltage amplitude can provide gray scales for the cell. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Barium hexaferrite (BaM) thin films were deposited on (0001) LiTaO3 substrates by pulsed laser deposition. Effects of the substrate temperature and oxygen gas pressure on the formation and quality of these films were studied. Films deposited at a substrate temperature of 800 °C and an oxygen pressure around 0.23 mbar showed the best c axis normal to the film plane with locked in-plane orientation. The saturation magnetization Ms and anisotropy field Ha measured by vibrating sample magnetometer were almost the same as those reported on bulk barium ferrite. Decreasing oxygen pressure hinders the formation of the Ba layer in BaM magnetoplumbite structure and gives rise to the spinel phase, which greatly decreases coercivity Hc of the films and finally destroys the whole BaM structure. Effects of the lattice mismatch and substrate-induced strains on the film structure were also studied. It was found that barium ferrite thin films grown on LiTaO3 substrates tend to choose a matching mode with compressional strains rather than shear strains. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Epitaxial LaNiO3 (LNO) thin films were grown on (001) SrTiO3 substrates by laser molecular-beam epitaxy. The growth process of the LNO films was monitored by in situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED). Clear RHEED patterns and the intensity oscillation of RHEED were observed during the epitaxial growth process. The morphology of the films was studied by atomic force microscopy. The results show that the films grown by this method have a nanoscale smooth surface with the root-mean-square surface roughness smaller than 7 nm on an area of 1×1 μm2. X-ray diffraction patterns indicate that the crystalline LNO films exhibited preferred (00l) orientation. The resistivity of the thin film is 0.28 mΩ cm at 278 K and 0.06 mΩ cm at 80 K, respectively. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In this article, we report our investigations on the doping effect metallic Ag on the intergrain magnetoresistance phenomenon. La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 (LSMO) thin films with Ag doping were prepared on (001) LaAlO3 at different substrate temperatures (Ts) by the dual-beam pulsed-laser deposition technique. Grown at Ts=750 °C, the films are perfectly epitaxial with their c axis perpendicular to the film surface. Ag dopant cannot substitute into the LSMO lattice, thus showing no obvious effect on the magnetotransport properties of the film, though it did impair the film in-plane epitaxy and improve the intergrain diffusion of the lattice atoms. However, grown at lower Ts(400 °C), the films are granular with c-axis texture. The Ag dopant exists at GBs and helps to increase the local Mn spin disorder at GBs and the phase interfaces, thus enhancing the eMR value by a factor of 2 compared with the undoped film. Experiment data also suggest that the transport mechanism underlying the Ag-doping enhanced eMR is spin-dependent scattering. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The contrast ratio of reflective bistable twisted nematic displays are optimized by means of a parameter space approach. By plotting the contrast ratio as a function of the twist angle and thickness-birefringence product of the display, the regions where the display shows the best contrast ratio are clearly shown. Both the absolute reflectance and wavelength dispersion of two bistable twisted states are investigated. It is confirmed that high contrast ratio of over 100 and reflectance of 100% with polarized light input are possible for such reflectance bistable displays. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.
