Objective and Design: Excitatory amino acid levels in the locus coeruleus (LC) and the behavioral signs during naloxone-precipitated withdrawal in arthritic rats treated with chronic morphine were investigated by in vivo microdialysis.¶Methods: Increases in glutamate (Glu) and aspartate (Asp) were noted after naloxone (48 nmol/5 μl, LC)-precipitated withdrawal from normal and adjuvant arthritic rats which had been intracerebroventricularly infused for 3 days with morphine (26 nmol/1 μl/h).¶Results: The increases in Glu and Asp levels on morphine withdrawal in normal rats were attenuated following naloxone challenge in the morphine-dependent arthritic rats. Moreover, behavioral signs during morphine withdrawal were detected following the naloxone challenge in both the morphine-dependent normal and adjuvant arthritic rats, but not in the saline-infused controls.¶Conclusions: These results show that the attenuation of Glu and Asp release from the LC in the adjuvant arthritic rats might explain the anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of μ-opioids in adjuvant arthritic rats.¶

    Notes: Summary UVB irradiation augmented the betaadrenergic adenylate cyclase response of pig skin epidermis in vitro. The effect was observed 2–4 h following the irradiation and lasted at least for 48 h. There was no significant difference in cyclic AMP phosphodiesterase activity between control and UVB-irradiated epidermis at lower irradiation dose (150 mJ/cm2), which is the dose of the most marked beta-adrenergic augmentation effect. The augmentation effect was specific to the beta-adrenergic system; adenosine and histamine adenylate cyclase responses were unchanged or decreased depending on the irradiation dose. Histologically, marked sumburn-cell formation was observed following the UVB irradiation. It has been suggested that oxygen intermediates generated by ultraviolet radiation participate in sunburncell formation. The addition of superoxide dismutase (SOD) in the incubation medium significantly inhibited sunburn-cell formation. On the other hand, the beta-adrenergic augmentation effect was not affected by the addition of SOD. Other scavengers of oxygen intermediates (catalase, catalase+SOD, xanthine, or mannitol) did not inhibit the UVB-induced beta-adrenergic augmentation effect. Further, superoxide-anion generating systems (hypoxanthine-xanthine oxidase system and acetaldehyde-xanthine oxidase system) revealed no stimulatory effect on the beta-adrenergic response of epidermis. These results indicate that (a) the UVB-induced beta-adrenergic augmentation effect is inherent to skin and does not depend on systemic factors such as inflammatory infiltrates following UVB irradiation; (b) in contrast to sunburn-cell formation, induction of the beta-adrenergic adenylate cyclase response is not directly associated with oxygen intermediates generated by UVB irradiation.

    Notes: A computer generation of all the non-equivalent superspace groups for one-dimensionally modulated structures has been performed. Comparison of this result with the previous list by de Wolff, Janssen & Janner [Acta Cryst. (1981), A37, 625-636] shows that three superspace groups in this list are equivalent to others and that six groups had been overlooked. The new list contains 775 (3 + 1)-dimensional superspace groups. Some ambiguous points in the notation of the superspace groups and the selection of the wave vector are discussed.

    Notes: The section method is applied to derive the Penrose pattern and related patterns with a ten- or fivefold axis. These are derived from a four-dimensional decagonal crystal or from a five-dimensional icosahedral crystal as a two-dimensional section. The two descriptions correspond to the three- and four-dimensional ones in the usual superstructure and the Penrose pattern can be regarded as the superstructure in the four-dimensional space. The diffraction intensities and symmetries of these patterns are discussed. The present study indicates that the point group in the quasicrystals is noncrystallographic but (m + d)-reducible similarly to that in incommensurate structures, where m and d are the dimension of the real space and the orthogonal complement to it.

This structure-factor formula covers any modulated structure described by a (3 + n)-dimensional space group. Future papers show the applications of this formula to one- and three-dimensional modulations.

    Notes: The modulated structure of the NC-type pyrrhotite Fe1 - xS with x = 0.09 has been determined. The analysis is based on a four-dimensional space group, Wpna21qq1, and an anharmonic modulation model with 53 positional, two thermal, and eight occupational parameters including up to fourth-order harmonics, a = 11.952, b = 6.892, c = 5.744 Å. The final R for 404 observed reflections is 0.097. The modulation wave for occupation probability of Fe shows a strong anharmonicity and has a low value in a narrow range corresponding to successive Fe layers perpendicular to the c axis of the fundamental NiAs-type structure. From this and the four-dimensional symmetry, it is concluded that Fe vacancies are distributed spirally along the c axis. The relationship between the usual superstructure model and this four-dimensional description is discussed.

    Notes: Structural relations of the two decagonal phases in Al-Mn and Al-Fe alloys with the Penrose pattern are discussed based on structure-factor calculations and symmetry considerations. The electron diffraction patterns are explained by models with layer structures which consist of the stacking of four kinds of layers constructing the Penrose pattern. Al-Mn has six layers within a period along the tenfold axis while Al-Fe includes eight. A projection along the axis shows the Penrose pattern in both models. The symmetries of Al-Mn and Al-Fe are expressed by the five-dimensional superspace groups P105/mmc and P105mc. These give the observed systematic extinction rules. In Al-Fe, an additional extinction rule due to the symmetry element of the superspace groupoid exists.

    Notes: Cooked rice and commercial glutinous rice cakes were frozen by a capsule-packed freezing method we developed, then stored. Characteristics of samples frozen by this new method were compared with those of samples frozen in deep freezers (–20°C and –50°C), or chilled in an ordinary (5°C) or Cold Fog refrigerator (0°C). Texturometer measurements, glucoamylase digestion, and X-ray diffraction analysis of specimens thawed to room temperature indicated that the samples prepared by our new method were superior to those frozen in conventional freezers or chilled in refrigerators. Simulation experiments in a program freezer showed that rapid freezing and adequate tempering were characteristic of our capsule-packed method.

    Notes: Abstract: Cell envelopes (CEs) are insoluble, chemically and mechanically tough structures formed during terminal differentiation of keratinocytes, providing skin with a protective barrier against the environment. They are 15 to 20 nm thick structures beneath the plasma membrane and continuous with desmosomal attachment plaques. Sequential deposition of several proteins including involucrin and loricrin leads to a gradual increase in envelope thickness and rigidity. Cross-linking of demosomal components to other CE-proteins has been demonstrated and desmosomes in the cornified cells have been demonstrated and desmosomes in the cornified cells have been regarded as a part of CEs. Our previous immunoelectron microscopy studies showed that desmosomal areas of granular cells were loricrin-positive, but those in cornified cells were negative. We asked whether this is due to epitope masking and applied trypsin digestion of the electron microscopy sections to retrieve the possibly masked epitopes. Since this treatment made desmosomal structures obscure, one side of the sections was stained with anti-desmoglein antibody as an indicator of desmosomes. Trypsin was applied on the other side followed by immunolabeling with anti-loricrin antibody. Trypsin digestion indeed unmasked the loricrin epitopes in the desmoglein-positive desmosomal areas of CEs. It seems therefore that loricrin is first accumulated at the desmosomes before the CE-assembly and cross-linking of loricrin occurs at the desmosomal areas of CEs as well as at the non-desmosomal areas.
