Colloidal silica particles with bimodal size distribution have been prepared by thehydrolysis of tetraethylorthosilicate in alcoholic solutions of water and ammonia as catalyst.Experimental conditions such as concentration of NaCl, amount of water and reaction temperaturewere investigated to reveal the formation mechanism of the colloidal silica particles. The nucleationprocess of colloidal silica particles with bimodal size distribution depends on the hydrolysis rate ofTEOS and the ionic strength of reaction media. The hydrolysis reaction is the rate-limiting stepduring the nucleation process. Nucleation involving background ions generated by TEOS hydrolysisreaction and addition of electrolyte(NaCl) is another potentially important factor for nucleationprocess of electrically charged clusters.     Notes: Abstract Cadaver studies were made to obtain more details about the arterial patterns in the thoracic and abdominal segments of the esophagus, with emphasis on the arterial supply to the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). The results showed that the inferior thoracic segment of the esophagus usually received blood supply from a single artery, with an average diameter of 1.42 ± 0.49 mm (X ± s), whereas the abdominal segment was commonly supplied by two arteries. The abdominal esophageal arteries coming from the left gastric artery were semi-circular in shape with an average diameter of 2.06 ± 0.70 mm. From these semi-circular esophageal arteries, 3 to 8 smaller arteries branched off and penetrated into the muscle of the abdominal segment of the esophagus or anastomosed with arterial branches from the inferior thoracic segment. Thus, the blood supply of the abdominal segment was richer than that of the inferior thoracic segment. This richness of blood supply, characterized by semicircular esophageal arteries in the abdominal segment, may be important for the function of the LES.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Une étude autospique a été réalisée pour obtenir plus de détails sur le trajet de l'artère du segment thoracoabdominal de l'œsophage en insistant sur l'apport artériel du sphincter inférieur de l'œsophage (SIO). Les résultats montrent que le segment thoracique inférieur de l'œsophage reçoit habituellement son apport artériel d'une seule artère d'un diamètre moyen de 1.42±0.49 mm. Tandis que le segment abdominal de l'œsophage est le plus fréquemment vascularisé par deux artères. Les artères de l'œsophage abdominal naissant de l'artère gastrique gauche adoptent une forme semi-circulaire et présentent un diamètre moyen de 2.06±0.70 mm. De ces artères œsophagiennes semi-circulaires naissent trois à huit petites branches artérielles qui pénètrent dans le muscle du segment abominal de l'œsophage ou s'anastomosent avec les branches artérielles venant du segment thoracique inférieur de l'œsophage. Ainsi, la vascularisation du segment abdominal de l'œsophage est plus riche que celle du segment thoracique inférieur. La richesse de la vascularisation caractérisée par les artères œsophagiennes semi-circulaires au niveau du segment semi-abdominal peut être importante dans la fonction du SIO.

    Notes: Abstract Aims/hypothesis. The short-term efficacy, safety and tolerability of rosiglitazone were compared with placebo in patients with Type II (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus in a dose-ranging study.¶Methods. After a 2-week placebo run-in phase, 303 patients were randomly assigned to 8 weeks of treatment with twice-daily placebo or 2, 4 or 6 mg of rosiglitazone.¶Results. All rosiglitazone doses significantly reduced fasting plasma glucose compared with baseline. All rosiglitazone treatment groups showed significantly reduced peak postprandial glucose concentrations compared with baseline (p 〈 0.001) and with placebo (p 〈 0.0001) and reduced postprandial glucose excursion, without an increase in the area under the postprandial insulin concentration-time curve. Rosiglitazone at 4 and 6 mg twice daily prevented the increase in HbA1 c observed in the placebo group. C peptide and serum insulin concentrations were significantly reduced from baseline in all rosiglitazone treatment groups. In all rosiglitazone treatment groups, non-esterified fatty acids decreased significantly (p 〈 0.0001) and triglycerides did not change. Although total LDL and HDL cholesterol increased significantly in the rosiglitazone treatment groups, total cholesterol/HDL ratios did not change significantly. The proportion of patients with one or more adverse event was similar in all four treatment groups. No patient showed evidence of hepatotoxicity.¶Conclusion/interpretation. Rosiglitazone given twice daily significantly reduced fasting and postprandial glucose concentrations, C peptide, insulin and non-esterified fatty acids in Type II diabetic patients. The glucose-lowering effect of the 4-mg twice-daily dose of rosiglitazone was similar to that of 6-mg twice daily, suggesting that 4 mg twice daily should be the maximum clinical dose.     Notes: A microscopic theory for ultrafast coherent Raman spectroscopy of polyatomic molecules in condensed phases is developed. For off resonant excitation, an effective Hamiltonian that controls the molecular dynamics in a Raman process is derived. The limitations of the driven oscillator model are clarified, and generalized equations of motion, which hold for resonant and off resonant excitation, are derived.     Notes: Dynamic light scattering from highly concentrated colloidal systems with a narrow distribution of particle sizes can be interpreted in terms of the sum of two independent modes due, respectively, to collective diffusion and polydispersity fluctuations; a general formalism has been presented for calculating the relative mode amplitudes for hard spheres in the Percus–Yevick approximation [Pusey, Fijnaut, and Vrij, J. Chem. Phys. 77, 4270(1982)]. This work extends the relative mode amplitude calculation to the general case where optical (i.e., refractive index) and size polydispersity are completely coupled such as in water-in-oil microemulsions. To develop the theory a concentric core-shell hard sphere model is adopted, in which particles possess a continuous variation in the core sizes but have constant shell thickness, thus giving rise to a distribution in the particle refractive indices. A new "measured'' static structure factor SM(0) is derived, and applied to the calculation for the relative amplitude of the slow mode, A2/(A1+A2), as a function of solvent refractive index n0. A strong enhancement of the slow mode is predicted as the optical matching point is approached. The theory also shows that the dependence of A2/(A1+A2) on n0 is very sensitive to the extent of polydispersity, but rather insensitive to the distribution function used. Neglect of the nonuniformity in particle refractive index can cause a substantial overestimate of the size polydispersity. We have used our extended treatment to interpret the dynamic light scattering data from concentrated water-in-oil microemulsions formed from H2O, AOT, and apolar solvents using solvent composition to control the contrast in refractive index. It is found that the AOT-stabilized water microemulsion droplets have a size polydispersity of about 6.5%, which is smaller than previously thought.
